I kind of thought that being on Amazon's top 10 for a month straight and the fact that this brought the Series back into the top ten - and for so long - would have ANY impact on Serenity's potential future but I have not seen a single article anywhere.

I guess it's too soon to say something definitive.
Besides, the Serenity DVD sales have to be gorram good, given that the movie itself hasn't been that succesfull.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Rian has the right of it.

A month on the top 10 list for Amazon is great news, but by itself it is not enough to carry the decision to make a sequel. With the poor turnout at the box office Universal is watching the DVD sales very closely. It will have to do as well if not better than the Firefly series DVD has done I think to get us a sequel.

That is where we come in. We need to push the DVD, recruit new people, do everything we can to get the word out to those that are still unaware of the series & the movie.

Well, the movie didn't do phenomenal in theaters, but it was close to breaking even with good DVD sales. The sales have thusfar been better than good, they've been insane. AND the movie sales have brought a new round of fans out to purchase the tv series, which has also been on the top ten.

My real questions are, I think: where can you see how much revenue has been generated by DVD sales ALONE? A month in the top 10 has to be worth a few million bucks, but where is this figure? In terms of watching the dvd sales closely, I would think that the month in the top ten would be good, but resurecting the three times as costly television series into the same range, well how long does this has to continue before someone somewhere says "yup - the dvds are sellin".

As far as where we come in, I own both dvd sets and no matter how much I love this series, I can't conciously buy another dvd just to bump a ticker I'll never see and which is being "watched closely" by someone somewhere.

Botton line: with the dvd sales the way they've been, to NOT make another movie or at least Sci Fi mini series would be foolish move in terms of making money. I feel like someone somewhere isn't saying "ok we greenlight more Serenity" because the result is that us die hard fans reach into our wallets to "help".

I agree.
I am doing all I can to push the series DVD as well as the movie. I am a recent convert, but have converted totally. I do everything in an 'all or nothing' attitude. I am totally sold on this series. I think whoever made the decision to cancel this show was either mad, demented, a mental vegetable, or downright evil.
My entire family is sold on this show. My kids love it, and believe it or not, they are very discerning.

I am trying to get all my friends to buy the movie and the series DVD's.

I am also writing model manufacturers suggesting that they create a Serenity model.

I ordered an Aussie copy of Serenity this morning hoping to keep boosting the signal. If you pre-order from EZYDVD you get a small discount.

Arclight, I'm interested in ordering an Aussie copy too... but I live in the US. Will it play on my DVD player or computer? And where do I order it from?

Thanks for any help and direction you can give me.

It will depend on your player. I bought a new Toshiba (banging the old player on the sides no longer fixed it) a couple of months ago. It was not advertised as "universal" but it plays my region 2 disc (PAL) just fine. I was somewhat amazed by this, I had loaded the wrong disc and it worked. The Aussie disc are advertised as PAL, so I'm assuming (with fingers crossed) that they will play also. If not there are websites where you can download the codes(?) that will realign the laser to read the various regions. I'm hoping not to have to do that. DVD players having become so cheap you might want to consider replacing your old one. Cost of my old, U.S. region only, player $215. The new Toshiba universal (I hope) player $60.
You can order the disc from EZYDVD. Google EZYDVD they pop right up. Happy viewing

Unfortunately, the sales have not been "awesome". They've been pretty good. Maybe.

Judging by sales rankings on Amazon will give you a false impression, since most people don't buy DVDs online. Whedonesque, another website, just reported that the DVD sales ranking for Serenity is now ninth. It never reached number one in national sales, peaking at number three, falling to number six last week and it's now ninth. Its rental sales are not high either, maybe because stores like Blockbuster didn't order many copies,or because the cover is lousy, because the general public still hasn't heard of it, or whatever.

It is, so far, a minor hit. We'll know over time whether it will succeed enough for a sequel to be considered. But that time isn't now.

Judging from things that Joss has said, watching the DVD sales is going to be a drawn out event. One or three months is not going to be enough to base any decisions on. The power of Firefly/Serenity is in it's longevity. People will still be buying the DVDs a year after its release, so time is our friend. That seems to be Joss's thinking as well from what I can tell. I'm totally excited that it's selling as well as it has, and I think it will continue to do well. It won't stay in the top ten, but it will be steady, me thinks, and that will be good. At this point I would say that if not another movie he will at least get a television miniseries out of it. I feel pretty confident that our crew will fly again. It may be another 2 or 3 years, but they'll be back.

Well, all I can say is I am not going to pay for the sequel. I love Firefly and Serenity and I've sunk all the cash into it I can.

I'll check back another time - maybe after Wonder Woman has been released. I spent all last year holding my breath for the movie, but I'm not going to hold my breath anymore. I have 5 disks at home full of The Verse goodness - let the bean counters sweat the future.

No one is asking you to pay for the sequel, but spreading the word is important too, and it doesn't cost you anything. Just get people interested enough to pay for their own copy, and if possible to do the same themselves.

Oh I've turned on pretty much everyone I know to this. It makes it easier to bear the lack of new stuff. But I have a hint of resentment toward whomever counts the dollars for it seems insinuated from their end that the only hope we have is if more and more and more and more and more and more and more money is spent on the dvds. Alsos someone earlier said something about Amazon selling only so many DVDs - I dont buy it. Number 1 on their DVD top seller list for three weeks around Christmas has to equal some pretty sincere cash flow, yet it still smells like "only mediocre dvd sales". I dont' buy it.

Okay, I am sure that this has been discussed to death, but I am new and I have a question.
I have just recently jumped into the world of Firefly. I am totally converted, as is my whole family. We are avid people with a lot of energy, so that is good.
My question is simple: Who in the Goram heck decided to cancel this show????
What were they thinking??(of course, the mere fact that they canceled this show is proof enough that they 'don't' think.)

But what in the world was thier reasoning.

But I need to know what in the world were they thinking.
Also, (again, I am sure that this has already been discussed, but as I am new, I need this answered as well) Is there any possibility of a sequel to Serenity, or maybe rebirthing the show???

Thanks
Rudy
