In a scene on another good Fox show, "Bones", one of the characters talking about a robot that doesn't take commands correctly Said "when I tell it to roll over it watches reruns of "Firefly". I had to replay it at least 5 times just to hear the Firefly name mentioned on current TV.That's the closest it has been to being back on TV. I know, I'm reaching.

I saw that.
One character was talking about the other's robot. "He's like you. Tell him to stop - he turns, tell him to turn - he stops, tell him to take out the trash - he watches reruns of Firefly."
I was so excited I had to watch it again just so I could squeal with delight.

My Mom watches Bones... thinks David Boreanaz is hot... I do not... on both counts.

She told me about it today, so I had to check to see if this story had been broken yet.

I wonder what the connection is? I doubt David Boreanaz told the writers to give his old boss a shout out.

Arrested Development needs YOU!

Mondays @ 8:00 on that evil network!

The connection is that Bones is a cleverly written, very sharp show created and designed to appeal to exactly the same demographic group that Joss Whedon's shows appeal to-- young, or young at heart, with a certain level of disposable income. (and perhaps a higher I.Q. and a sharper sense of irony than average.) To get all Sixties on you, a fairly hip audience. And lets face it, Firefly -- and now Serenity -- is nothing if not hip. Just ask the critics.

Three years ago it was "too hip for the room" --the "room" in this case meaning the then-current Fox executives. It seems the present crop of suits has wised up some. If FF had gotten the (deserved) level of support Bones is getting it'd still be on the air.

Not to start any crap, but even with the change in management (or whatever); FOX has not wised up... I repeat, FOX HAS NOT wised up.

The situation with Arrested Development made me extremely offended that you would say that FOX has wised up... FOX has always broadcast the most original programming, but they don't stick to their guns. The cancel the groundbreaking shows in lieu of higher ratings.

PS. Just so there is no confusion, I am in no way bad talking 'Bones'

Here's a list of (some of) FOX's groundbreaking shows that were cancelled due to low ratings...
Firefly,
Arrested Development,
Greg The Bunny,
Dark Angel,
Wonderfalls,
Action,
Family Guy,
Titus,
Grounded For Life,
Undeclared,
& Harsh Realm

and I'm sure I missed some great ones

Like it or not, that's the way it goes. Can you think of another network that keeps low-rated shows going, just for a small (if dedicated) fanbase?

Arrested Development is a great show. But it's ratings suck. Fox has actually stuck with it longer than anyone expected them to, given that the ratings were just as bad last year. They came thiiiiis close to cancelling it then, yet gave it another chance to build an audience. It has not.

And relax, it looks like it'll end up on ABC or Showtime anyway.

I just can't believe that in this nation, because American Idol gets 52 million viewers (seems exagerated, but that's what FOX claims); 6 million people watching Firefly is considered as "nobody's watching" and the 3-4 million that watch Arrested Development is thought of as a horrible turnout.

6 MILLION PEOPLE!

anywho, just can't wrap my head around that

I saw that episode of Bones and it pissed me off. They likened Firefly to trash. Just goes to show that even though the DVD is selling like mad and the fanbase is as strong as ever that FOX is still completely ignorant of what they have there.

How was Firefly likened to trash? The statement was just a fancy way of saying 'I ask you to do a chore and you do something else.'

Also, I don't think Fox would have had anything to do with the reference. Likely just a shout-out by the writer.

I took it that the robot would do the opposite of what is was told so I don't think they meant it in a bad way. Or is that just me?

I am Joss' bitch!

I agree. If anything, they were saying it was the opposite of trash, given that the earlier statements were that the robot did the opposite of what it was told.

Space Above and Beyond, which Fox not only cancelled, Chris Carter killed off almost everyone in the last episode so no one like the Scifi Channel could pick it up.

Acctually, this is the second time Firefly was mentioned in a show; if you count the first episode of the return of Family Guy. Peter tells his family that they have been cancelled. Lois then asks if there is ever a chance that they will return. And Peter says only if such shows as..blah blah blah Firefly...blah blah blah (he mentions like 15 or more shows) get cancelled then they might have a chance.
I so love references to my favorite shows within eachother. Gives you that warm fuzzy feeling that you are watching shows that are speaking to you. I know that is lame.

Here, here!

I LOVED easily 70% of the shows on that list and you're right the-network-that-shall-not-be-named has shot themselve in the foot so many times it's not even funny!

Arrested development, (while not cancelled yet) has been on the chopping block almost since day one. IMHO it's a miracle that they got a full season, much less two...

Wonderfalls I think got 4 episodes before they canned it, and it was ALSO shown out of order, innovative, well written, and different...

Greg the bunny was HILARIOUS! I think it was a little bit to "out there" though for the public... :(

The point I'm trying to make is that, the FOX talent screeners can spot a decent show.

but the execs are more willing to make "when squrills(sp) attack IV" (YES, it was a real show)...

JAAAAAAAAAAAYNE! The man they call JAAAAAAAAAAAYNE!

Boy, that must of pissed off Glen Morgan and James Wong big time!

To be fair, there was only one character killed off for sure...

That was a great show!

You know, I'm an idiot. I don't know why I was thinking Carter. It's been so long since it went off. One character was in a damaged ship, looking like it was going to disintegrate in a planet's atmosphere, the colonel had a limb blown off. I thought it really did kill it for anyone picking it up.

I also had made that mistake about Chris Carter before (that's why I couldn't resist ribbing ya). I think it's because the show was touted as "From the makers of X-Files" or something to that effect and that of course makes ya think CHRIS CARTER...

I think at the time I read it somewhere. Nonetheless it was a shame it wasn't continued.

I wouldn't give FOX too much credit for giving Arrested Development more or less time. It's ratings aren't great, but the DVD sales are good, and hit a VERY sought-after demographic of young professionals. I think they decided to keep it around largely to see if that group would start watching the live show.

wounderfalls, that was such a great show. :) Even the theme song was cool. What is it with TV stations, they kill of all the good shows and let crap take its place. I know it wan't the station that shall not be mentioned, but I remember when Roswell was switched from station to station, and finally canceled, also in the middle of a season. What crap did WB put on instead? The OC.

If you play Nationstates.net check out the region Firefly.
