US Shafted By Serenity DVD

By Scott Gwin: 2005-12-11

Hey American Browncoats! Joss Whedon is really pissed off that you whined and tantrumed until Serenity, the movie based on your favorite TV show "Firefly", and then didn't bother to turn out en masse at the box office to support it. How angry is he? He's sending a giant screw you your way by giving the far more financially supportive (by per population anyway) British fans a slightly cooler Serenity DVD.

We don't usually cover DVD news on this site, but this was just too hilarious to pass up. According to Empire Online, Whedon's release of Serenity will be a step better in the UK than in the US. Those of you laughing right now thinking you'll just order it online from Britain need to remember that Europe uses a totally different formatting than the states. You can order as many copies of the European Region 2 DVD, but most of you won't be able to play it in your Region 1 DVD players. Heh.

So, what's so great about the UK version? It will include a 20 minute bonus featurette outlining Whedon's efforts to bring the movie to the screen. Other extras for the Brit release are pending but the package could continue to get better for the European crowd. Americans can expect the regular goodies like extended footage and deleted scenes, but for once Europe is getting the edge.

What this fails to take into account is that it is currently amazingly easy to get a DVD player that's region hackable. I bought one for around $40 so that I could import Spaced (and soon Black Books!).

Furthermore, there's practically no chance that Joss is upset with his fans. That's just a bit of snarky hyperbole from the author of the article.

You can also use a computer to download DVDshrink (@ http://dvdshrink.org/ ) and buy the UK version and remove the region code, so you can play it in any DVD player. That is what I intend to do.

So Britain gets a better version of Serenity than the US does? So what! I doubt that most Browncoats over on this side of "the pond" could really care and it doesn't matter to me if the Brits get a slightly more "fluffy" DVD because I always have the satisfaction of knowing that 230 years ago we opened up a big can of whoop ass on the British Redcoats at Yorktown and sent them scurrying with yellow stains running down their trousers. So go ahead and feel superior, Losers!

Oh, it's not being released until Feb? The END of February? Isn't that 2 MONTHS after the US release?

Actually all this really tells me is that there will definitely be a "Special Edition" released in the US sometime down the road.

and yes, I did preorder the Aussie set...(just in case.)

What's with all the hostility towards the British? We're all BROWNCOATS. Who cares where we're from or what extras are on the DVDs? If you're that dedicated a browncoat you'll buy all versions anyway. I really hope that the hostility in this thread was a joke. A bad one.

And yes, we are a bit jealous ya'll are getting more extras on your DVD release. (Though when I think about it I'll bet that extra is just the SciFi preview recycled...)

Hooray for Britain! Yey! Etc!
I also read in some random DVD magazine in WHSmith that more extras are expected on the disc on top of the 20 minute feature... it didn't give any idea as to what the other extras might be. I just remember the magazine stating, "[The Region 2 DVD] will blow the US version out of the stratosphere!"...which is nice.

For those who are talking about it not being possible, just remember that it has happened before. Just for one example, with Farscape PK Wars.. quite a bit more bonus features on the R2. Personally, I don't understand why they don’t just keep the same features through all the regions. :\ That aside, this probably is just some sad joke by some sick attention-seeking journalist, but if the UK do get more features I'll just get the R2 version. I'm lucky enough to be able to play it.

Well said. Look, we got to see it early in the theaters (for some of us, VERY early), and we get it earlier on DVD, too. So basically, who cares if the UK DVD has more to it.

And, as an American, I do get sick of the whole "we kicked your #@*!" and my personal favorite, "If it weren't for us, you'd be speaking German!" mentality that is all too prevelant over here. No wonder half the world hates us.

"The last thing I want is that any of our descendents should look back in some years and despise us for not daring to act when we had so much capacity to act. We must dare to seek how, why and on what we agree. We shall thus be able to join together to look for alternative solutions and new ways of managing the world's challenges. Being diverse is our richness, acting together will be our strength". (Federico Mayor; 02-04-01;

As far as I'm concerned, this talk of extra features on the foreign release disks is just further confirmation of a bigger special edition release in the (relatively) near future.

They can call it Serenity: The extra-shiny edition.

Most new DVD players are region free, even if not advertised as such. I bought a new Toshiba couple months ago that will play all regions. $60. So if I have to spend some more on the Brit version of Serenity what's that to me. Firefly is worth.

I think the overseas distributors might have demanded extras so that they have a chance to compete with imports which are available 2 months earlier.

Multi-region DVD players are very common in the UK because there are lots of things that are never released in Region 2 or that we have to wait ages for. Only people who don't know about region coding would buy a crippled player.

I agree with this theory. I'm sure Joss doesn't hate the American audience. It's a movie based on a failed TV show. No big stars and hardly any marketing. You can't expect much and Joss knows that.

These look like prety reasonable definitions to me, but then I'm a Yank so I often dunno wherfore I speak...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pommie

and from:
http://www.answers.com/topic/australian-words

Pom – (also pommy) a word for an English person. Generally regarded as being mildly derogatory. The true origin of this term is somewhat obscure, and several theories abound. The Macquarie Dictionary states that it is a contraction of pomegranate, which was rhyming slang for immigrant ("imme-granate"). (See also fake etymology. Another common explanation is that "pom" originated as a term for British convicts sent to Australia; that is, as an acronym for "Prisoner of Mother England". However, this theory is not accepted by lexicographers.)

I think it was somehow coined during the second world war. I could quite easily be wrong though. I dont think it is really that much of an insult though, I know plenty of "english" people who call themselves "Poms". One other cultural tale I know about the "english or poms" is that they rarely bathe (or dislike bathing).. or so the story goes.

P.S. I think the name "Pom" is rarely used without the adjective "Whinging" preceding it.

My own favorite Aussie insult is yabo (which I take to mean roughly "dumb hick"). I also like the Puerto Rican term "Jibaro" which has a very similar connotation. Despite their injurious intents both terms have a nice sound to them and fall trippingly off the tongue.

Heh,

I suspect the Aussie term you are referring to is actually Yobbo, but to american ears may well sound like an A instead od the drawled O. Yob being the shortened version, and is also a British term.

As to the origins of Pom, I have my suspicions that it may well lie with the French. A french girlfriend once told me that while the English refer to them as Frogs, a frequent french term for the English is 'Beef & Potatoes'-ie dispariging their traditional complete lack of culinary grace. Now the French for Potato being Pomme de Terre, could hint at it's origins. Itmay have well slipped into Australian usage after World war 1 - when we served in France. And lets face it, are likely to have picked up any word that someone else was using to hang crap on the Brits.... Not that we would do that any more, or cringe about our own culture any more *ahem*

By the way, usually the US gets the best DVD extras, so try not ot be so bitter when we Brits get a better DVD package FOR ONCE!!!!!

I get fed up of Americans (or Yanks in British slang) who get all high and mighty about how awful the British are and about how superior they are to us Brits.............

I, for one, like Americans........... I find them out going and friendly and I often prefer that to British reserve and sarcastic sense of humour.

However, CAN YOU PLEASE STOP GOING ON ABOUT HOW YOU WON THE WAR OF INDEPENDANCE and HOW YOUR SOLDIERS CAME AND WON BOTH THE FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WARS blah blah blah blah blah .......... HOGWASH!!!!!

I have studied both US and British history, so I know what I'm talking about.

The US is a great country and champions democracy, but I think that you'll find Britain has been a democracy longer- parliament really came into power after the end of the English Civil War in 1651.

I'd just like to quote from a booklet prepared for the US soldiers coming to join in WW2, to prepare them for life in War time Britian....

" You may think of them (the English) as enemy Redcoats who fought against us in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. But this is no time today to fight over old wars again or to bring up old grievances.......it doesn't mean anything now.

The most evident truth is that in their major ways of life the British and American people are much alike. They speak the same language. They both believe in representative government, in freedom of worship, in freedom of speech,. But each country has minor national characteristics which differ. It is my causing misunderstanding over these minor differences that Hitler* hopes to make his propaganda effective....
(* - insert any present day opponent to democracy and for the US/British 'special friendship')

You can learn all the math in the 'verse but you take a boat in the air that you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turn of the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she ought to fall down, tells you she's hurting before she keels. Makes her a home." Mal, talking about Serenity
(sure Mal, you're so NOT talking about Inara!!)

JAYTEE

Earlier I'd posted a snide comment trying to be facetious but it went over like a lead balloon. I was making a kidding reference to the American Revolution. While that part of history might have had some animosity between both the U.S. and the U.K. today we are allies and so are the Aussies.
Do most of the haters here suffer from long term memory loss from too many nights hitting the bong? I vividly recall in the days following 9/11 when most of our hearts here in America were breaking. What did you see in London or Sydney? You saw mobs of people with American flags waving them in support! You saw men and women crying in the streets because they grieved with us! The U.K. has held it's own in each of two world wars in the last century when the French folded like a house of cards in a stiff wind and if anyone here doubts the honor, decency and bravery of Aussies they should shut the f' up until they've read a history book about Gallipoli or go there and see how well they are treated as Americans compared to Paris, France. While many people here and abroad are angry at the U.S. because of Iraq, overall people in the U.K. and Australia will NEVER turn their backs on the U.S because they are honorable allies, not fair weather friends. They'll have our backs when times are tough. I've met so many good people from the U.K. and all the Aussies I've met were nicer and friendlier than most of my fellow Americans. God bless America, God Bless Australia, God bless the U.K. and of course God Save the Queen! Haters just shut the f' up!

No, it wasn't directed at aboriginals.

I think that JAKEOZ might have solved the problem. It did sound like an "ah" sound to my southern U.S. ears.
