CALLMESERENITY

Hi all! I'm asking for a bit of help.

You see, I have a cousin who has a disorder called galactosemia. Basically, it means his body can't utilize galactose, which is a kind of sugar mostly found in dairy products. Short story, my cousin can't have anything dairy. It could kill him.

Duncan Hines was the only cake mix on the market that didn't have dairy in it, until recently. They just changed it and added milk to all their cake mixes. It may seem like a little thing, but to my cousin, and the thousands of people like him, it's the difference between being able to eat like a normal kid, or having to do without. It's hard for my cousin to always have to read labels or ask to see ingredients at a restaurant before he can eat something. It's hard to have to bring his own food with him to make sure he'll have something to eat. He just wants to be a normal kid.

So, we're trying to get Duncan Hines to change the cake mixes back. And this is where you come in. Could you take a few minutes to email, write or call Duncan Hines or its parent company? If enough people make enough of a fuss, we can get them to change it back. It'd been done before, and it can be done again.

Please write to:

Duncan Hines Consumer Affairs
PO Box 91000
Allentown, PA 18109

Or Call Duncan Hines at 1-800-362-9834

Or e-mail the parent company (Pinnacle foods corp) at

Pinnaclefoodscorp@casupport.com

Tell Duncan Hines that you are unhappy with the ingredient change, and ask them to please take the dairy out of their cake mixes.

Perhaps we can get Duncan Hines to reverse this decision.

Thank you so much!

Thank you for the heads up, I'll bet my mom doesn't know about this.
In addition to being her favorite mix to work with, it was the only one she could bake with for my father- he's lactose intolerant. So, not only people with galactosemia, but also lactose intolerants won't be able to eat them. And that makes for a very large population of the US.
I will be getting everyone I know to add our voices to this.

This is too weird, Serenity - my son Cameron has DG variant Galactosemia, meaning that he has about 20% of the normal level of the enzyme that digests galactose. Cameron can drink milk, etc, but if he consumes too much dairy he gets sick with flu-like symptoms, just for a day or two until his body can catch up. Of course I'll help with the petition, I know about the disease. There aren't THAT many galactosemics, but if the lactose intolerant folk speak up too, that's enough people to turn some heads.

I did a search and found several companies claiming to offer non-dairy cake mixes. You might want to look into these companies. Here’s one that sales a wide variety of non-dairy products, gluten-free products. Sounds like right up your ally.

Another alternative is to make the cakes yourself with a non-dairy recipe.

Oops.
My bad. See, I'm deadly allergic to coconut. Duncan Hines was using coconut solids for their milk substitute, and I and a few of the other coconut allergy sufferers tantrumed.
This may very well be my fault!
*hangs head in shame*

But I'll write the company! Maybe they could do a specifically non-dairy line?

lol! Yes, we'll blame you. It's all YOUR fault!

It's always something, isn't it?

That's a shame you're allergic to coconut. I love coconut.

Do other cake companies use coconut solids, also?

You don't pay attention to these things until you have to.

Pretty much anything advertised as non-dairy uses coconut solids as thickeners, unless it's a 100% soy product.

The real pain is movie popcorn. That greasy tasty buttery stuff is made with coconut oil. :(

I'll email them as soon as I have enough time to actually write something intellegent, and not rant on half-asleep.

One of my best friends is lactose-intolerant. Luckily she takes medicine for it, but it's annoying. Whenever she has dairy without the medicine, she feels sick for a few days.

I feel worse for another friend of mine who can't have gluton. Basically that's stuff found in grains, wheat, etc. The only grain she can have is rice. Everything else makes her sick and sleepy. On top of that, she's vegan (by choice, because she's very enviromentalist). So it's really hard for her to eat like a normal person (no school lunches, no special foods, no donuts!)

Well, movie popcorn is soo greasy and loaded with fat. You're not missing much, I think. (Do you just sneak your own in? Because that's what I'd do. Don't tell anyone! )

This is interesting. I'm learning new things about foods! I never paid much attention to whether or not anything had dairy in it until I moved here to where my cousin lives. Now I scour supermarket shelves for the one kind of chocolate chips he can eat and snatch up the one kind of margarine he can have when it's on sale and rewrite my favourite recipes so I can make him cookies or brownies or whatever. And I forgo my favourite holiday treat, macaroni and cheese, because he can't eat it. It's a shame, I have an amazing mac & cheese recipe I only make for Thanksgiving.

Serenyty-fortunately there are lots of gluten free products to be found in health food shops. My grandmother was on a gluten free diet before she passed away. I found these rice flour pretzels that I like better than regular pretzels. They're tasty!
