Likes to mess with stuffs.

According to a rumor over at The Digital Bits ( http://www.thedigitalbits.com):

Quote:

Universal will soon announce the DVD release of Joss Whedon's Serenity for 12/20. Early word indicates that the disc may include Whedon audio commentary, along with at least 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Future History, We'll Have a Fruity Oaty Good Time, Re-Lighting the Firefly and What's in a Firefly), a video introduction to the film by Whedon and 6 minutes worth of outtakes.

This would be the most wonderful Christmas present in the world, if it's true! Somehow, I don't think so though...

And a note to Joss/Universal if you're reading this: DON'T SHORTCHANGE US WITH THE DVD!!!

I don't want to get the DVD, then next year see a "Special Extended Edition" or something. Put EVERYTHING in the first release! I'd like one comentary from everyone including Joss, and another with just Joss (like the one for "Objects In Space"). Also, I want ALL the outtakes and deleted scenes, and the option of watching the "extended" version, with scenes that had to be cut for time put back in.

Oh, and I'd also like world peace, and a pony.

Thank you!

That would be a significant day in Firefly history. 12/20/02 was the day the pilot episode Serenity aired on TV.

[whine] You know, I thought I'd finally have a message I posted make the front page when I mentioned this a few days ago, citing the same source, but I guess not. [/whine]

Anyway, unless the movie starts getting crowds like gangbusters and it stays in theaters about a month longer than expected, it is probably true. Everyone wants their dvd's to come out in time for the Christmas holiday and I'm sure Universal and Serenity is no exception.

I could be wrong, but I'd be very surprised to see an extended version with all the deleted scenes restored. Seems like that only happens with very successful films, where the studio feels like the extra cost to put something like that together will be justified.

Heck, you can't even watch Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones with the deleted scenes put back in their proper places. At this point, I'm just hoping they'll be on the DVD at all, even if it is only under the Special Features menu...

Joss has said that he considers the theatrical cut to be his "director's cut" and will not be adding any cut scenes back into the movie for the dvd; rather, they'll just be included on the dvd as a special feature.

DVD releases are arranged that way because it makes more money. Don't forget, at the end of the day Universal is there to make money. Not to make good movies, not to make the fans happy - they are a corporation, and profit is their goal. In my opinion, this isn't bad or evil - it's just the way the system works. I'd very much like to live in a world where it was all about quality and fan happiness, but we gotta deal with what's in front of us.

Keep in mind also that Serenity's numbers are extremely borderline in the box office - a lot of people are saying that the DVD sales are gonna be crucial when it comes down to the question of a trilogy. The more money the DVDs make, the more likely there's a trilogy. So I'm all in favor of Universal making as much money as they can. That's why I'll happily go out and buy as many different versions of the DVD as they want to sell me, wallet permitting.

All I really really want from the dvd (aside from the BDM itself, of course) are the deleted scenes. Oh, how I want to watch them ALL.

The outtakes would be SUPER shiny, too, though. And I do love commentary. But I would be overjoyed to see the deleted scenes. More time with the BDHs!

Actually, Universal was planning to release the DVD in December before the movie even hit theaters. A friend of mine is a store manager for Suncoast and at their annual meeting about a month before the film premiered, the Universal rep told them they were planning a December release for Serenity. So, this has nothing to do with how much it makes or how long it's in theaters - it's all according to plan.

In fact, I've heard (not from the same source, so this one is more rumor than anything) that King Kong will be released in theaters and on DVD on the same day. Seems odd, but it'll be interesting (if it's true) to see how it plays out.

Actually, there is going to be a movie released in theaters and dvd the same day. I forget the title, but it is not King Kong. I think it a Soderberg (sp?) picture.

And if Serenity is still chugging happily along in theaters a month from now I would think the dvd release would be pushed back, plan or not. I would be suprised if it that happens, but then so would Universal.

All DVD's should have deleted scenes and outtakes. I also think a cast commentary would be great fun. But it would be really shiny if there were a commentary with Adam Baldwin in character as Jayne. Just think of what Jayne would say about the movie. hi-larious

Also a tribute to Wash and Book should be included.

Yep, Steven Soderburgh's new film. He said he wants people to be able to walk into cinemas and be able to buy the film in the foyer.

A December release would definitely make my year, but actually I wouldn't mind at all a theatrical version and then a special edition later, if that's what it took to get all kinds of good stuff added. Not too likely, I suppose. At the least, though, I want some "behind-the-scenes," some commentary (Joss and actors at minimum), and the deleted scenes. I really want to see those Mal and Inara scenes from the shooting script. (Yes, I confess, I'm a cynic and therefore a hopeless romantic.)

They can make as many editions of this movie as they want, and i'll buy every single one.

Also, seconding the idea of a 'Jayne' commentary, that'd be too cool.

They could do a commentary with all the cast in character! Just imagine Wash saying something to Zoe like "Hey, I didn't see you do that! Oh, I forgot, I was busy being all corpsified..."

Honestly, I don't care what they put on the DVD if it comes out on 12/20 ... it'll still be the best damn Christmas present a girl could ask for!! I can't wait to have it in my hands and actually be able to watch it whenever I get the urge, which I suspect will be quite often

Though, if a super-shiny, 'loaded with extras' edition is what we get in December, I'd hardly be complaining!

Here hoping there's a fan cut somewhere in the near future!

(For those who don't know, all the Star Wars prequels have had 'fan cuts' where the deleted scenes are reintegrated into the movie and it's then posted on the net)

There MAY be a commentary on the first release, but it isn't certain. Some of the items above are also sketchy, since the 12/20 release is more of a slimmer, "get it out the door so that the revenue will help the movie's bottom line" kind of disc.

The expanded edition, possibly multi-disc, is supposed to appear by June of 2006 and should have more bells and whistles -- including the possibility of multiple commentaries from cast and crew.

JACKONIELL

Im just going to post on a couple things. First of all for being in theaters only two or three weeks serenitys doing pretty good(about 21 million as of before this weekend). Because of this im predicting itll make about 39 to 45 million in ticket sales and I wont try to predict dvd sales im just not good at that. Im bringing this up because (by the way this is probably the wrong thread to post this in but Its 1:30 AM here and im two lazy and tired to find another thread) the punisher made about 30 million in theaters and 52 million over all and their makeing a sequel for it(good movie by the way)so what im getting at is keep up hope for a sequel, money isnt always everything if the people who made it in the first place are willing itll happen. If they really want to make the movie and the fanbase is large enough they can tell universal to go (explicit) themselves and find a new new studio. Also by the way I never saw firefly not because I didnt want to, but because I didnt know about it, and no offence to any big firefly fans but I say this movie is very good without bias because I wasnt a big fan of the series because I never saw it. Sorry for the anger back there but I could care less if the movie made jack shit because its a very very very good movie the best ive seen this year and deserves a sequel and im angry at anyone who dosnt think so. Ill simplify this once again into one point No matter what it ends up makeing or what the critics think if enough people like it and the people are dedicated they can find away to pull together enough money to make Serenity 2 happen. I thank everyone who reads this for listening to me rant because I found this site after watching the movie and I liked it so much I just had to say something.

P.S."Ill probably buy the Firefly DVDs even though Ive never seen the show, because if its anything like the movie it probably kicks major ass."
