Hiya,

I don't mind other sites inlining news related images, but this site:

http://www.runner.ch/firefly/index.html

is just overdoing it a bit to the point where even I would consider it theft of bandwidth.

Can someone who understands the language help me tell that webmaster not to do it?

Thanks,
Haken

Inlining is the process whereby Website A (the foreign site) loads images from Website B (FFF.NET) for visitors to Website A.

Everytime one of these images are loaded when someone visits Website A, a bit of bandwidth is stolen from Website B.

Most webmasters consider it theft because the amount of bandwidth stolen can translate to higher hosting fee for the hosting website (in this case FFF.NET).

that is rude. i hope you can get them to stop. if you want to translate the page, you can use this website:

http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr

it does not give perfect translations, but you can get the general idea.

You mean the images that are on this particular site are ones that are actually hosted by FFF.net, and this site's just routing to the link to show them?

If that's the case, it looks like he's doing it from the original official FOX site for the show, too.

PS: looks a bit German... have you tried setting babelfish to German?

Yeah. He's beginning to move up the referer list so I took a look. I don't mind that a lot of the images he used came from my site, but what I do mind is, as an example, the little javascript he has running that loads the random images directly from FFF.NET. He can have the images, just don't steal our bandwidth.

ch = Confoederatio Helvetica

Haken, how about blocking image theft with htaccess?

http://altlab.com/htaccess_tutorial.html

HOW DO I STOP HOTLINKING AND BANDWIDTH THEFT?
You can stop servers from hotlinking your site's files by editing the .htaccess file in your site's root directory. (Consult your webhost on accessing your .htaccess file.)

Example: Your site url is www.example.com. To stop hotlinking images from an outside domain and display an image called nohotlink.jpg instead, use this code in your .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{ HTTP_REFERER} !^ http://(www\.)?example\.com/ [NC
RewriteCond %{ HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteRule \.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ images/nohotlink.jpg [L]

To allow hotlinking images only if the REFERER (sic) is from a specific directory from your domain:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{ HTTP_REFERER} !^ http://(www\.)?example\.com/dir/ [NC
RewriteCond %{ HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteRule \.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ images/nohotlink.jpg [L]

To stop hotlinking images from specific outside domains only, named badsite.net and badsite.com:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{ HTTP_REFERER} ^ http://(www\.)?badsite\.net/ [NC,OR
RewriteCond %{ HTTP_REFERER} ^ http://(www\.)?badsite\.com/ [NC
RewriteRule \.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ images/nohotlink.jpg [L]

Limit bandwidth usage by returning a 403 forbidden code. Replace the last line of the previous examples with this line:

RewriteRule \.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ - [F]

ack. Might work if he uses Apache

Haken,

A friend of mine used to have the same problem with a gallery she ran. She was able to find a CGI Script that would only show the picture if the request came from a certain address.

This would keep people from stealing your bandwidth. I will ask her about the script next time I talk to her.

no, not with M/S IIS, you need outside stuff like

I'd like to know too. I renamed the big versions of some of my images, but ended up removing them altogether. I got tired of seeing my 55 mb images used as 100 x 100 pixel forum avatars, listed in forums and used as background images on other sites.

I think the problem mainly comes from ignorance - it's become so easy to make your own website that it's not neccesary anymore to know any details about making websites and thus learning about bandwidth theft. I was pretty oblivious about it until it happened to me.

Hey, Haken - what about inlining some of HIS images if he doesn't stop? That should make him take notice ;-)

Link doesn't work but out of curiousity I searched "Hate Firefly" and "Firefly sucks" and from the first few pages saw very little along those lines. Mostly people bitching that FOX sucks or they hate FOX. Most of the people (that hated or thought it sucked) were Dark Angel fans that hadn't even seen Firefly and others saw an episode on TV and didn't understand what was going on.

There was one review of the "Serenity" that said it was completely boring and the actors couldn't act if there life depended on it and the sets looked cheap and the F/X was not as good as Star Wars. Person couldn't write very well (didn't capitialize any words, run ons, fragments, etc... over and over again) so I didn't give the review much merit.

"Please, no hotlinking to pictures from fireflyfans.net - like the random images at the top, left." Not really that nasty - but pretty clear imo.

if this is still a topic I'm glad to help. I'm german so I won't need babelfish to talk to that guy.

SUCCATASH's massage is so supersweet in german he will either not understand what the problem is or he will think it's ironic and really a BAD flame. we germans (and the swiss are somewhat the same) tend to be more to the point and less sugarcoated. the second message sounds reasonable. we don't easily take offence, be nice (put a please in there somewhere) but there's no need to be very polite, just say what you want. we're somehow just the opposit to the japanese, they tend to be even more polite than the english/americans.

should I email him? or is there already a communication established?

as far as I could see the pictures on his site seem now to be hosted on his server, but I didn't check them all. he probably doesn't know all that much about webdesign and just wanted to make a Firefly site for the german speaking. the texts on his site sound translated too. not babelfish though, translated by a person.
