If you replace the "http://" portion of this site's URL with " https://" it'll be running in secured mode. No immediate plans for what to do with it yet, but you can always post stuff from your office without big brother sniffing out what you posted.

Don't squat with your spurs on.

Not that I understand that completely, but thanks Haken.

Frankly I'm just glad to have another opportunity to thank you for this website. If I was hooked up to a video camera you would be able to note that I have a glass raised to toast you. (PS I have used the amazonlink to make purchases, I hope that money reaches you.)

SUCCATASH

Succatash feverishly begins copying files to his office computer. Especially, all the naked email pictures sent to him by female Browncoats.

I've been waiting for this day. Thanks, Haken.

https is secured http protocol, if you are just talking regular http, then the conversation between your browser and Haken's server is in plain text - anyone in between can grab the conversation and look thru it.

However, if you are talking https, then everything between your browser and Haken's server is encrypted. No one in between can ever figure out what the conversation is...

This stuff is expensive too. Look at:

http://www.verisign.net/products/site/secure/index.html

They charge $350 a year to have a valid SSL certificate so that you can talk https ...

Uh! Don't DO that! What if I didn't read the entire string?!!! I would have thought I was safe.

Okay, port 443 is now open for the https, what's interesting is that my browser keeps prompting me about a secure and nonsecure item in this thread.

If I say "yes" to display both secure and non secure items the lock disappears, which means that it's not encrypted. If I say "no" then the lock appears, which means it is encrypted. This somehow sounds not right. Anyone else getting this?

I know why it's prompting me about the non-secure item in this thread. It's your inline image, Jasonzzz. If I secure the page, it won't display the image.

Yeah, that's probably a good thing... Usually on a secured site, you are guaranteeing that the client browser is seeing what they are supposed to be seeing in addition to the conversation being secured...

only if you use the https is the conversation encrypted. The website isn't encrypted by nature otherwise.

And since Haken had port 443 blocked (which https needs to talk over), you wouldn't have been able to use it before.

But now it's ok. He unblocked it and https works now.

No, the lock not appearing doesn't mean that the entire page is not encrypted. Try getting to it, answer "yes", then look at the properties of the page, you will see that it's still using the ssl certificate. The reason why the lock is no longer there is because how IE interprets the encrypted session. IE thinks that - while part of the page is served using the encrypted session - since it's serving some un-secured parts, it doesn't want the user to believe that it's an entirely secure session.
