There was a recent discussion about FFF.NET's Google Page Rank that provided a great deal of insight as to how FFF.NET can raise its ranking in order to attract new new visitors to the site.

It's been a while since I've looked at our Alexa ranking. For those interested, you can see the info here:

http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/fireflyfans.net

As is apparent, FFF.NET's traffic has been steadily dropping for a while. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can raise our Alexa ranking?

I don't have any ideas, but I will donate a "Jayne" hat if you want to have some kind of contest to up membership. I sold 35 to SCBC last year and over 30 here in Denver. PM me if you are interested.
I use to vote in the voting thread, then it was taken over by people who think cheating is okay, so all of us from the former thread left, (and that was a lot of us). I have noticed that all of my usual boards are not as active, I think there are way too many boards and people can't be on all of them. I think some of our ususal people are over on the "Chuck" board, I know people from the O.B. are there daily. The 76th Battalion board has slowed down too.

Anybody got any ideas????

Sometime after that discussion, I have started to do my yahoo search with only "firefly" instead of "fireflyfans" each time I visit here.

This time, for the first time, I have noticed that fireflyfans.net is the 3rd ranked result, after it's been up to the 4th ranked result for a week or so. When I started this new routine, it was down off the page, like 5th or something, depending how the rankings work.

The 2 higher ranks were #1 imdb and #2 wikipedia hits.

It has been 4th for me on Yahoo.

Also, based on what I've noticed, the ranking result seems to be user/browser specific on Google.

I use 3 different browsers at home. Here are the rankings for the search term 'Firefly' through Google for each.

Firefox - 1
IE - 4
Safari - 6

It's conceivable that in Google's case, they may even return results that are based on a profile of me derived from the cumulative data of all the sites I've visited and search terms I've used in the past. Scary stuff if one really thinks about the implications.

Today it's back down to 4th on Yahoo. I missed a day yesterday, but 2 days ago it remained 3rd for all the hours I was checking.

Up to 3rd again today. The scifi channel hit had been in third for these past days. I did not visit or search on Sat or Sun.

The 2.5 min/day Alexis time seems short. But that's true for most website rankings.

You can post FFF RSS on your blog, which keeps your blog fresh every day.

But now google counts all blogs on blogger.com as one blog, so it dont help the ranking, unless FFF gets posted on 100s of unique blog servers. FFF listed on 10,000 yahoo geocities sites only counts as 1 link to google.

Yahoo Geocities is banned and deleting all of its 35-million free websites in 2009, so say goodbye to those links to FFF, which will hurt search ranking.

Google Video is deleting all 100-million videos on its servers in 2009, but those pages dont allow real links, and may be invisible to google search anyway, due to frames.

Youtube fanvids should link to FFF to help ranking. Make more fanvids, and stay away from youtube with Universal Studies bands. Post the same video on several servers.

So posting FFF links on your own websites, forums, myspace etc is extremly helpful to search ranking and name recognition.

Dont forget RWED for cross-promotional recruiting in other forums and websites. Post your own fav news stories on the feed, serious or silly. Learn how to post pictures using google images. This actually puts FFF in competition with major news sites, when enough different folks post articles on a consistent basis.

That's a great way to lure the majority of non-fans to discover FFF. Search engines tend to ignore a page if it posts an entire article as seen on 100s of toher sites, so copy and past just the best parts and include a link to the original. Adding commentary also raises the search ranking, compared to just a link.

Forums than ban or censor RWED tend to die and fade away through sheer boredom, or become commercial monstrocities that nobody visits on a regular basis.

RWED could also be expanded with added categories, copied from other large forums. Computers, sports, cooking recipies, health tips, etc. This aids Alexis ranking atracting readers with categories unrelated to FF.

The strongest point of FFF is its fanfic, which is almost as good as if FF were still flying on Fox. So it should compete with other scifi, when folks know it exists.

What would REALLY help ranking is if somebody can figure out how to make videos of FF fanfic, either animated or with amateur actors. Talk with your local theatre troup, adapt some fanfic to a short screenplay, add videotape with funny outtakes? Stars Wars has done well with that genre, but it don't need it. Like PeeWee baseball, but with actors.

Videotape of "Rocky Horror" type midnight movie screenings of Serenity can be posted online, linking to FFF.

The web is changing, and FFF has to keep up with the 21st Century. Sink or swim.

A new, refreshing design may be in order. The current design's great and relevant (I particularly like the random screencaps at the left) but it's not really very modern. The logo in particular lacks much weight. It blends in with the background too much and doesn't even say Fireflyfans - only "Joss Whedon's Firefly". While it's good to reinforce that we're talking about the show and not, er, the bug, I think a good, clean and very obviously Firefly-styled design with our own Fireflyfans logo would look pretty good and might keep people on the site for longer.

I could whip up a mockup or something if you all'd like.

Just noticed new today, with searching for Firefly on Yahoo, results have another column on the left, one section is "related subjects" or similar, and list Nathan Fillion and Joss Whedon among others.
Not sure if you already knew about this feature, I never saw it before.
