Hey folks,

The 2002 Hugo awards for science fiction and fantasy were announced at TORCON 3 this weekend. 'Firefly's Serenity' had been nominated in the Best Short Form Drama category but lost out to 'Buffy's Conversations with Dead People' for the award. The voting played out like this:

Vote standing for Short Form Drama:

1) 'Conversations with Dead People" - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

2) 'Serenity' - Firefly

3) 'Carbon Creek' - Enterprise

4) 'Waiting in the Wings' - Angel

5) 'A Night in Sickbay' - Enterprise

So Joss had 3 of the 5 nominations. Pretty damn shiny! (Plus, the two Ent. episodes were donkey poo so I think they must have been pity nominations for Star Trek cause it's tanking.)

I got a feeling that the board isn't as lively as it was once upon a time either. *sigh* I, though, don't really know the import of the Hugo awards. I'm glad Firefly is there, though!

Viva Firefly!

Yeah, I'm really surprised that hardly anyone responded to the original post. The Hugos are the big deal in the SF community. The fact that Serenity came second place in the voting is remarkable. Another ep, Objects in Space was also on the original nomination list before they had to pare it down to the final five. Joss must being doing something right to earn this recognition.

Did he write both 'Conversations with Dead People' and 'Waiting in the Wings' as well?

Cause if so.....wow.....I can't think of a better word.

Joss wrote and directed "Waiting in the Wings", but not CWDP. That was Jane Espenson and Nick Marck respectively.

It was a (US) holiday - give people a break. I didn't reply earlier because I just got back on my computer and saw the post, might be true for a few other folks as well.

As much as I really would have like FF to win, it still says a lot for the show to get second, and that it was Buffy that beat it. If Enterprise had won I would have had to add Gorram Hugos! to Gorram fox!

Think about it, it took a show with 7 strong seasons and by the same creator to beat Firefly. That should just add to the pile of things to make fox feel all manner of stupid for cancelling it.

Hi there, i've been lurking here for a full year now, and for some reason this particular post has drawn me out of hiding--

I just felt the need to provide a little information (though i'm sure it's fairly common knowledge).
According to various interviews, CWDP was written by 4 different writers, one of whom was indeed Joss.
In my opinion, they were the 4 "god" writers of the show at that time... since the episode was split into 4 totally separate scenes, Joss wrote the scene with Buffy, Marti wrote the scenes with Willow, Jane Espenson wrote Dawn, and Drew Goddard did the nerd trio.

(and of course, it wouldn't really matter whether or not Joss did have a direct hand in it, since most of the concepts and plot beats come from him, he rewrites the episodes, he works closely with the directors, art department etc. on each episode, is often supervising during filming,
and besides he's created the motivation and style for the other writers to work from.
And that's especially true on Buffy, where he has always taken an especially personal hand )

It is a shame Serenity didn't win, though (simply because it was would have raised Firefly awareness and we could say to non-fans "hah! Firefly won a HUGO even after half a season. so there!").

Well, kudos to Joss.
And I have to say that the BTVS episode was probably the best of the season (imo).

So it doesn't hurt too much losing out to one that good.

I can't remember which Angel ep Waiting in the Wings is - so I'll assume it is good, if Joss wrote it.

But it is pitiful that those two Enterprise episodes made the cut to the final five -- they were both extremely weak. (again, jmo)

well im happy Buffy was first and firefly second....very happy days.

the angel episode waiting in the wings was the one where angel inc. go to the ballet....really amazing episode. plus sidenote: summer glau has a cameo as a russian ballerina trapped in an eternal time loop ballet thingy by a warlock who has a massive obsession with her.....can this girl handle complex characters or what?

I agree that it says something that Firefly almost won the Hugo with only 13 aired eps. I doubt this will make FOX feel stupid for cancelling it. If they haven't figured it out by now there's no hope for them.

On the other hand this can add the buzz for our new movie, maybe help us get some attention when we need it just before the film is released.
