Was Tim MInear NOT involved in the BDM in any way? I didnt see his name in the credits and was wondering why, since he was such a big part of the show. I would have thought he would have been one of the Executive Producers.

Also, has there ever been any discussion on why Greg Edmonson was not chosen to do the BDM music? Was this a desicion by Joss (and has he said why) or was it as simple as he was on another project and couldnt do it?

The score of the BDM is probably the only thing I can say that I dont worship about it. (and thats only in comparing it to the series score which is just......well you know....unbelieveably perfect and beautiful)

I would love if anyone can bring me up to speed on any of this. The more details the better (not that I have to tell you guys that )

Thanks!

The decision to keep Greg Edmonson out of the movie was Universal's. And it was an incredibly stupid one. The soundtrack to the movie was at best unremarkable and at times bad enough to seriously detract from the mood.

Reportedly they believed an experienced film composer would help insure a more 'epic', film-like score. It was the most glaring of the attempts to mainstream Firefly for the movie.

As far as Tim Minear goes, he was busy doing Wonderfalls and other projects as plans for the movie were being made. Likely he was just too committed and assumed he'd be busy making great television. But there's not much of a market for that apparently. Joss has indicated he'd like to have him on board any future Firefly efforts. I'd love to see that myself and felt his influence was missing in the movie.

Aaaahhh....I wonder about this though....too commited to work on the BDM at all....not even consult? (insert... "its not in the budget" here) thats it though? I was hoping for a little more juice.

I didnt know he did Wonderfalls ...another show I was into watching that just dissapeared.

Thanks for the info!

Yeah, I don't recall reading anything about Tim being shut out. He just has aspirations of his own and had the opportunity to be the main showrunner for a change. If I recall correctly he was also under some contractual agreement to produce shows for the devil, er... I mean Fox. Not sure on that one though. Either way, he's made clear he'd love to be involved with Firefly again (as has Greg Edmonson) and Joss has said he wants to work with Tim again. I don't think there's any 'juice' to the story. Not that I've heard about anyway.

I love it. It's one of the most powerful sci-fi scores I know. Everyone directly comparing the two soundtracks does wrong to both of them, anyway. Newman did a great job, it's sad that not many seem to appreciate it.

I totally agree the score was not up to the movie

But i have a Q -- The orig. firefly score - is fantasic - but isn't that tied to the "rights"
of Firefly - so they couldn't use it?

and if they used another fantastic score wouldn't it be "tied" to the movie?

maybe Joss was thinking if/when he did another
series the "new" score would be created by
the firefly composer .(Just thinking and hoping
on my part)

afterall how many haunting, powerful scores are there?

I truly hope there isn't "bad Blood" between the two -- they were great on this

maybe Joss had to the movie to assuage his ego

afterall he was the creator -- and the evil,
bad, fox network - called His baby ugly

(Tim helped birth it - but it was Joss's "baby)

I think the respect for Edmonson as a person is clowding the judgement of many browncoats. If his name would be written on the CD instead of Newman's, many browncoats would suddenly change their minds.

I loved the score. And I would favorably compare it with the score from the series. As I listen to it, I have a hard time figuring out what it is that people don't like. It seems to me if you liked the firefly score you would like the BDM score, but that's just me.

As for Tim Minear, there is no bad blood between him and Joss. They have even talked about Tim making a possible Spike movie. Of course now that The WB is no more, that may not happen. I think the reason that Tim did not help with the BDM is because he was working on Wonderfalls and then went straight to The Inside (the great fbi show that fox axed way too soon). If a sequel is ever made (fingers crossed), it would be really awesome if Tim collaborated with Joss. Those two minds are great on their own, but put them together and you have something really special.

I think there's a few very short bits of the BDH score that are absolutely fantastic. Maybe 90-120 seconds worth...

The opening run of Serenity entering atmo leading up to the buffer pannel loss is good and had great potential as a 'theme' I assumed would be carried through the movie. Only we never hear it again exept for 2 VERY brief reprises very late in the movie.

If that wonderful theam had been incorporated more and or extended more than 20-30 seconds into a real 'song' it would have rocked.

I thought the rest of the score became a prety monotonous dirge. It could have just as easily come from any number of other films. Sure it was better than those others in production quality but almost nothing about it stands out as uniquely Firefly/Serenity to me.

Yes, scores are mostly "mood" music (I own many) but c'mon. I find nothing truly memorable except the fact it only has that briliant minute or two (split up across 3 tracks) that shines so brightly above everything else. I'd love to buy a single of that theam extended to a 3 or 4 minute piece. Better yet, all three bits extended into full tracks of each variant.

My 2 cents anyway.

I think he actually was busy with his own projects. There's no bad blood between Tim and Joss. I even read somwhere Tim wrote notes for Serenity.

I can honestly say that isn't the case for me. Edmonson seems like a fine fellow, but its his music that I respect and enjoy. If there's anything clouding pure objective judgement for me, it would be my taste for the western style music that Edmonson incorporated into the series. Serenity's soundtrack was a definite step away from the ambling laid back feel of the Firefly score.

Taken purely on its own merits, I might have enjoyed the soundtrack a litte more than I did. But knowing how cool it could be, ala Firefly, the movie music was disappointing. I feel the same way about several of the changes that were made to mainstream Firefly for a wider audience. I just seemed to leave a lot of the charm behind.

Frankly, the whole movie was. For me they are two different concepts. In other words: It was no "Firefly - the movie" so it had no "Firefly - the movie" score.

Bud,

I'd say you hit the nail right on the head! The Serenity had all kinds of potential.

Did any of you notice the horns in there? Very different from Joss's original vision. Remember, Horns were suppose to be for the Alliance.

I sure hope that when our baby flys again the whole team can come back. Joss, Tim, Greg, Chris, the all of the original cast and crew!

Ah,yes... this is a wonderfull dream.

Mal: Jayne, just how many weapons you plan on taking? You only got the two arms.
Jayne: I just get excitable as to choice. Like to keep my options open.
Mal: I don’t plan on any shooting taking place during this job.
Jayne: Yeah, well what you plan and what takes place ain’t ever exactly been similar.
Mal: No grenades.

Sorry to disagree with most of you, but I think CBY may be right about this.

I loved the soundtrack of Serenity, and Firefly, too---Edmonson & Newman are both great composers.

I think people tend to neglect the music at the end of movies while the credits are running. I sometimes play the credits of films over & over again just to hear the music---(it must drive the neighbours crazy).

You're missing the point. While I certainly disagree with you about the relative quality of the two composers, it's just a matter of taste and personal preference - if you like it that's great. But regardless of the quality of the composing, the style and tone is what's changed. Edmonson's music for the series was so special because he went for something unusual, the strings and the folksy country sound made for a really unique feel, especially for science fiction. It helped make the show a soulful, intimate experience. The more common 'movie-soundrack' music done for Serenity was unremarkable and impersonal, even if it was good.

Well, you're right, SergeantX, but is it necessarily bad to change now & then? I thought Joss intended the movie to be a different thing than the series anyway, and the movie really does have a more impersonal feel to it, as you say. Maybe they will bring back Edmonson for the next movie and series!

By the way, did you hear Newman's score for "Ice Age"? I loved that, too, but I guess I'm getting off the subject here...sorry!

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

There is no mind-changing. The movie score sucked. It was just a routine Sci-Fi action-adventure score.

When Joss fired the original composer (forgotten his name), I had high hopes. But the results make me wonder just how bad the other guy could have been. Certainly the explanation he gave on his web-site (he was used to the longer musical cues more typical of movies, but Joss wanted a different musical element for every shot that introduced a new visual element, & there were hundreds of those elements) doesn't hold up. Does anyone remember a lot of different musical cues in the movie?

Sorry, I gotta disagree on the opinions about David Newman. I think the score is great and perfectly captures the essence of the film.
