Yes, don't spend your money on more copies of Firefly and Serenity. Don't take it the wrong way, I'm a HUGE fan of the movie and the series and I want Firefly to fly again on the air too.

But buying multiple copies won't help much! How many of us can actually afford to keep buying more copies until sales hit the mark?

I estimated there are roughly 10,000 (or even more) dedicated Browncoats worldwide. We got an army here! If each of us able to convert just one person into a Browncoat a week. Then there are 10,000 more browncoats a week. Those 10,000 would proceed to convert more. Then the number of fans will increase exponentially to a remarkable number. Majority of people never even heard of Firefly or Serenity. I think the movie and the show really have mass appeal which makes converting process not very difficult.

And please stop writing letter to studio executives begging for the show. They only see green when it comes to decision. DVD sales is our only saving grace, not the begging fan letter or online petition.

Again, can u imagine an organized army of 10,000 Browncoats can accomplish!!! Please start convert now, just 1 a week.

That is exactly my aim with buying multiple copies, Zidank. I give them as gifts, donations, etc. to people or organizations, to encourage new audiences to take a look. I had been loaning out my personal copy, but I don't like going without.

I have had great luck winning new Browncoats in this way.

I agree, I'm broke! I'm not a big girl by any means, but I love my food, and I cut back on groceries so I could by 2 more sets (Movie and Series). I'm converting my sister this weekend, and my best work pal next week. Although, I kinda want to keep the extra copies for myself in case something happens to mine, but that would just be selfish!

I converted my husband, friend and two neighbors

but I can't see how letter writing is bad
(or DVD buying)

The networks will see "potential green" and
so can the sponsors - numbers wether in fan mail, or DVD sales - numbers are what they look at.

I only purchased extra copies so I could loan them to people, introducing it to them and trying to convince them to buy their own. On occassion it's even worked!

I don't think there's anyone who's just buying copies to buy copies, but I could be wrong.

You mean my plan to buy 1,000,000 copies and store them in an abandoned warehouse down by the docks is foolish?

I've managed to convert five people this week and I plan to buy another copy of Serenity to give to my family today. I'm also in the beginning stages of planning to have a Firefly/Serenity booth set up at my college(I go to LSU) so I can give out freebies.

Dvd sales are great, and i'm all lfor buying them as legit gifts and such, but we have gotten some publicity... the industry does know that we are sorta inflating the #'s... so again i have to say: we need huge ratings for the mar 10th sci-fi channel marathon.... cuz that's something we can't artificially inflate, start getting freinds to set their vcrs and tivos for it... the 1 new convert a week plan is brilliant though.. btw if we spend all our $$$$ on the dvds we won't have the cash to make the serenity tpb a bestseller, just something to think about.

i'm a leaf on the wind.

This brings up, to me, the suggestion of pirating copies to give to people.

Hmmmm. It's an interesting dilemma. In this fashion, many more people would come to appreciate Firefly - however, the "studio execs" would have pretty much no idea.

And also, it's a bit horrid to rip off Firefly (I didn't really need to add that did I?)

Bigger fanbase? Yeah.
Greater likelihood of a new series... probably not.

Another point of view: I myself was given a burnt copy of Serenity from the internet, which got me into the whole thing, and I have since pre-ordered the DVD, and I am saving for the Firefly box set (I am so poor right now) as my friend wants it back (!!!). Perhaps if people love it enough they will go and buy legit copies? This is an issue to consider.

What about something like giving out a one episode "teaser" VCD to people? Would that work? Is it too illegal, is it too disrespectful? I don't know.

Opinions?

I have some first hand experience on how this issue was a success.

I have been working my brother to watch Buffy for over a year now. My wife and I enjoyed the entire series over a 4 month period (US and UK DVDs) and wanted to share the joy. My brother mentioned my harassment to a neighbor who then handed him Firefly.
He couldnt stop raving about it (and was sold on the Joss style). He quickly made me a pirate of it for my little vacation to Iraq. I have since watched it 3 times and shared it with 3 others (2 of 3 are true browncoats now).
As a result, my brother bought me a copy (one for him too in case you were wondering) and sent it to my wife so she could enjoy). I have also just sent a copy to my college roommate (who got us to watch BTVS in the first place).

So bottomline, 1 borrowed = 1 pirate = 3 purchases.

First of all, multiple copies of serenity = cash for 'Versal and a great way of converting others which = good. so i say buy as many copies as you want! it won't hurt in the slightest, it can only help.

secondly, i wouldn't pirate them, but if you copy the disks and make multiples of them and then just lend them out to your friends it won't be wrong and will help firefly since once the people know that they can't keep the copies, if they like the series enough they will go out and buy their own copy. This has worked for me several times and is still working (yay!).

10,000 worldwide? That seems way low to me.

If Sean Maher had 5000 people cheering for him in one room, well, do we really think half the browncoats in the world were in that room?

Also, DVD sales are above 500,000 right now (probably significantly above). So do you really think that every browncoat bought fifty copies?

No, but the number of purchased DVD copies is at least three times higher then the actual number of browncoats.

The DVD sales were 500,000 last September before the movie came out.

With all the new browncoats and all the sold-out DVD's last Christmas, it's gotta to be at least 7 or 8 hundred thousand. And by your numbers, the actual number of browncoats is what? 250000. Still, I think it's higher than that, especially if you define browncoat as a fan of the series. You don't have to be hopelessly obsessed to be a fan.

I didn't make that up. According to the "Add your DVD to the total"-threads (Part I+II) 353 people bought 761 Serenity-DVDs.

The term "Browncoat" is a matter of definition. I personally think it's primary for the hardcore fans, not the common supporters like me. I prefer the term "Firefly-Fan" ("Flan" sounds ditsy).

KAELE

Well, the numbers would be kinda screwy then.

I PURCHASED two copies of Serenity. I only kept one and gave the other as a gift (though not in that particular order).

My mom PURCHASED two copies of Firefly. She gave both as gifts, one to my dad and one to my hubby.

I may just purchase another set and give it to my brother.

I don't like the idea of pirating it. I am pretty sure that most people out there do not have the disposable income to be hoarding Serenity and Firefly DVDs. Like me.

I'm buying two because I want the extra material the Australian one has to offer and I want one in my own region (region 2).

As for converting new fans? I've converted ca. 9-10-ish people that I can think of and I ain't stoppin' ;)

Same here - bought (and continue to buy) copies as gifts, plus as instruments of spreading the word and converting new fans. At the end of the day if all studios understand is money, this can't hurt - and it spreads the word.

I was surprised when I was listening to a Firefly/Serenity podcast ('The Signal') where a section of the show was dedicated to getting Firefly back on the air and/or a second Serenity film. They said that three ways to acieve this were to buy several copies of Firefly: the complete series, several copies of Serenity and other Firefly/Serenity merchandise. Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see the return of Mal and co, but I can't afford to buy out all of HMV.

Me and my friend have started converting our mates into Browncoats, though, and I hope they buy their own copies of Firefly and Serenity...

So far I've owned two copies of both cause I couldn't live without them. Also I'm about to buy the movie and box set again for my friend cause every household should have a copy and I don't think she has much spare cash. I'll probably end up buying six or seven copies over the course of the year. It's like buying a CD when you know you can get the music for free pirate style cause you love the band.

In short you do the unnecesary when you're in love.

yep.

I have bought 4 boxsets and BDMs.

I kept a set, the other 3 sets went as gifts at x-mas to various people who I knew would love them but who I also knew whould never go out and buy them for themselves...

Oh, I also bought an Australian BDM for myself to get the extra bonus feature stuff. The interview with Joss on disk 2 is way cool.

I made a copy of the boxset disk 1 at reduced resolution/quality and without the director/cast comments audio tracks that I loan out. This protects my original set, encourages the loanees to buy their own set to see what happens next if they like it and I never have to worry if I don't get it back as the copy only cost me 35 cents or so to make.

I even donated a cheap, K-Mart DVD player (about $30 or so) to the ski-house I was a guest at one weekend this winter. I wanted to watch firefly after skiing and they didn't have a player... I started off the houses DVD collection by leaving them the disk 1 copy I happend to have had in my car. With luck, lots of people have seen it since then and said, "Cool, I'll go buy the full set for myself."

I'm sorry, but this is a ridiculous thread.

DON'T buy more copies because YOU can't afford to buy multiple copies?!? Like many of the responders, I buy multiple copies to give as gifts AND to boost DVD sales, and even if I didn't give them away, it's my ruttin money and I'll spend it however I choose.

The more we wave our insolent banners of disposable income, the more the studio/network snots will listen. DVD sales are DVD sales, no matter how you slice 'em...period.

Also, letter writing may not turn the tide, but I doubt it hurts if the letter is polite and not fanatical.
