This is my first shot at one of the unaired episodes. I actually think this is the weakest of the three unaired episodes, even though I have a total fascination for Saffron. It's not as if there's anything wrong with the episode...it has layers, it has Saffron, and it even has some wonderful humor...but it just doesn't hit me as strongly as the remaining episodes. I have to say, though...so much is suggested that would have been so very, very shiny!

Here's my review for Firefly 1.11: "Trash":

http://www.entil2001.com/series/firefly/season1dvd/ff1-11.html

Overall, this episode is not quite as strong as the three episodes that came before it. The writers don’t quite take advantage of the return of Saffron, and while the plot is extremely clever, that’s not where the strengths of the episode lie. It’s the commentary on the characters, especially their facility for self-deception, that gives this episode its punch. As always, Christina Hendricks is worth the price of admission.

am I right in thinking the three unaired were:
The Message, Heart of Gold, and Trash?

Because I have to say that I found 'Trash' to be the best, most exciting, and most meaningful of the three.

I loved the discussion about Saffron's 'nakedness' when Mal gained insight into her nature and her motives....
and Saffron strips Mal in the hopes of gaining some revenge; but there is not revenge there really.
It is so clear at the end there that Mal has no problem being naked in front of his crew, he trusts them completely and has no reason to hide from them. They know his faults and his virtues so he isn't afraid to appear naked before them (whether we mean physical or metaphorical nakeness).
Besides, I really loved Inara getting the drop on Saffron and ending up saving the day!

America loves a winner!

Of the 3, HoG seemed to have the weakest links. Book and Zoe fending off armed men w/ a what amounts to a fire hose seemed overly silly. And what was w/ that chase scene at the end ? Mal( on his trusty horse ) riding down Rance ( in his landspeeder ), out in the wide open.....

Rance: " drat! My laser gun has run out of laser gun energy! "

Mal: " Ah-HAH! I've chased you down and now I'll leap from my moving horse to knock you off your landspeeder, you villian! "

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

I'm with you there re HOG - Its a funny episode and has some nice touches - the development of the Inara/Mal angst is all to the good but it does come across as overly melodramatic and a little contrived - and, frankly, the funeral scene bores me!

Okay, I'm lost, I'm angry, and I'm
armed.

in my humble opinion, i took "trash" to be more of a goofy, comedic episode more intended for a laugh and light on character development (which does not mean there is NO character development, just not a whole lot compared to other episodes). kind of like "smile time" on angel. funny. smallish advances in the overall story arc. has some memorable scenes and lines.

my half penny.

Important people don't do field work.

But Trash has that wonderful "exchange" (it is kinda one sided) between Jayne and Simon, with River as the exclamation point! Kaylee gets to show that she's good with more than engine parts. Zoe shows that she might forgive, but never forgets. Mal proves he can get over on someone who cons for a living. River shows more of her psychicness! I mean, for no character development, there seems to be a lot there, is there not?

And, let's not forget:

"How did she get here? I mean, we're in space!?!"

Incredulous Wash is my favorite Wash!

What I mean to say is that this episode is more about whats not shown, but implied. Mal had to have listened to Saffron to have let her on the ship. Mal and Inara had to have had a conversation about the caper off screen so that the plan would have worked. Saffron would have to have found the time to sabotage the engine. Plus, (and this is for the ladies) I think a lot of women like this episode strictly for Captain NoPants...

Again, just my opinion.

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

I think HoG is probably the weakest episode overall - which isn't saying much, considering that I love every episode. I justified the horse-as-fast-as-a-landspeeder thing by assuming that horse strength advanced at a faster rate than landspeeders over 500 years - that, or the horse's name was Popeye, and Mal stuffed him with some spinach off-screen.

Trash is actually one of my favorite episodes overall - which, again, isn't saying much, considering that I could say that about any of the episodes at any given time.

That and the kicking dirt in her direction thing totally reduce me to snickers and giggles... every time...

One thing I have noticed in Firefly (particularly in Ariel) are a few "style tributes" (whether intended or not, but I think they are) to an old 80's TV Show.... The A - Team.

The firehose thing struck me as one of them, as did the video/audio montage of the caper preparations in Ariel.

I wonder if Joss was a fan of the show ?

I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this...

...just take a good look at the screen on the trash box thingy, and tell me if you see anything familiar there.

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Contemporary GUI desktop, with three windows open that I can make out &, if I'm reading the taskbar correctly, a fourth that I can't. But I've a feeling you had something more specific in mind.

I dont know.... I think Heart of Gold might be my favorite Ep out of all of them. You get a look into Mal that you hadn't seen before, as well as with Inara.

A question about the very beginning:

When Mal takes the lipstick from YoSafBridge, he says that she and lipstick are a dangerous combination. I'm not sure, but it sounds like if you listen very carefully, you hear something hit the ground and burst into flames after Mal throws the lipstick. Did anyone else hear it, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?
