Just curious if anyone knows where they filmed the desert scenes in the various FF eps. I know a lot of filming happens around Tucson, AZ, and also at Valley of Fire State Park in NV. In fact, I've visited the spot where Kirk died in ST:Generations (Silicon Dome, in Valley of Fire), and I believe that spot is also where they filmed the rock climbing scenes in this season's second episode of Enterprise.

As I journey to the Southwest every now and again, I'd like to plan my next trip to hit some of the FF filming locations, though. Especially the valley where Mal met Patience. Anyone know where these locations might be?

In the commentary for Serenity, the pilot, Joss says something about how hard it was to find locations around LA that don't have anything manmade in them. Inferring from that, Serenity was filmed just outside of LA. After that most of the desert scenes were shot in the Mojave Desert. This is pretty much nailed down by the vegetation that you can see. Most especially in War Stories were Mal And Wash are caught by Niska's men you see Joshua Trees. Those are the strange tall spikey plants growing on the hill. Joshua trees pretty much only grow in the Mojave desert. Here are a couple of links you might find of interest

The town of Mojave California is within easy driving distance of LA and is frequently used as a base of operations for film companies (and tv and commericials)filming in the surrounding desert. My best friend is on the town council and reports for the local newspaper so I get all the inside scoop. Bonus info, the Mojave Aiport is where the Burt Ruttan recently won the X-Prize for manned commercial flight. Hope this helps.

It helps somewhat, in that it almost rules out the Sonoran Desert (which also has Joshua trees). But like the Sonoran, the Mojave covers a huge bit of land. So I'm hoping maybe some folk familiar with the area might recognize certain landmarks and know more specifically where scenes were filmed.

That is not to say I don't appreciate your input, Starhand, for I certainly do. Anything that helps narrow it down is good. Thanks!

Reminds me of flying from London to Los Angeles. I looked out the window and thought "Wow - thats a desert the size of my country!"

I live and die for this question.

As somebody else pointed out, there are joshua trees in War Stories, and there is one and only one place on earth where joshua trees grow, and Joshua Tree National park encompases a lot of this area.

Thats like, 15 minutes away from my house.

I also think that a lot of it was shot somehwere along 395 (i think) heading out towards ridgecrest. There's a whole lotta nothing out there, but its still close enough to LA to get some of the LA radio stations. Probably only an hour or two from LA.

Another road with a lot of nothing is the back road heading from Joshua Tree to Vegas, although 395 seems like a better bet.
