Apropos of absolutely nothing (and DO NOT ask what I was doing when this popped in my head) I had a quick flash of Mal eating that tomato and how excited they all were to see real vegetables in the Pilot. This added to the fact that they ate bricks of protein (yuck). It suddenly occurred to me that if they were a civilization advanced enough for prolonged space travel and the terra-forming of Planets - why didn't they have some damn hydroponic pods of some sort to grow fresh vegetables and fruit in?

I think it was a space ( ) problem. In a relatively small craft, it would be difficult to find a permanent location for a hydroponic pod.

You never knew what kind of cargo you might be asked to move, and you wouldn't want to use space for a pod that might be used for cargo.

Besides...Wash would want to grow "carrots".

Remember, the last surviving plants and hydroponic gardens were ejected by Silent Running.

Something I think I heard, it might have been in the Serenity RPG manual, is that Kaylee would like a hydroponic system, but Mal says they can't afford it.

They wouldn't even need hydroponics. A pot with some dirt and a grow lamp would be enough to keep a tomato plant going. They'd just need to put some mesh around the pot & over the dirt and secure it to a wall to keep it from moving around during "bumpy" flights.

Either hydro or dirt farming would be space and labor intensive, and require a long time to get results. With a real crew of only 5 ( Mal, Zoe, Wash, Jayne and Kaylee) and everybody else technically passengers ( Inara, River, Simon and The Shepard) who would do the work?

I think Penguin is right about the spacial issue. And Bytemite's proposal makes perfect sense.

I speculated that they eventually obtained some indoor sunlight lamps and enough growing space for things like tomatoes and peppers.

So what about chocolate? I don't recall seeing chocolate ever on Firefly, and this thread has chocolate in the title too, strike that, I do remember Kaylee trying to make Simon's cake seem as chocolaty as possible, but did it have any real chocolate in it.

BONABON

What I thought was particularly curious, was that early on in the BDM someone passes through the kitchen and it seemed to be well-stocked (or at least much cleaner and colorful). Even the table seemed like it had food on it, though no one seemed to be getting ready for meal time so one could only guess it to be surplus. I remember thinking that business must have been good for them lately, because the last time they had food just laying out was the apples after their big heist at Ariel.

Shortly thereafter Mal justifies his sacrificing the man to the Reavers when robbing the tradepost by saying the crew hadn't been paid in a while and he like to be able to eat.

I'm sure the verse's version of cheap "cocoa powder" is ashes from an organic incinerator with a heaping of artificial sweetener treated with red dye...

Kinda one of those "you don't want to know" things, yeah? Don't even get me started on the "coffee."

Bonabon: I imagine Mal has learned how to ration out food and money for a while. If you look at all the characters, they look a little thinner, Mal even looks borderline gaunt. He might have decided to have someone cook up a decent meal for them with some of what they did have before they went out on the job, and maybe they were in too much of a hurry to clean up before they had to break atmo.

They are now saying that we're running out of chocolate, and 20 years it'll be a rarity. A couple hundred years down the line, maybe no one knows what it is.

I just better be dead by then, that's all.

It's the fifth food group. You'd think someone would have more respect.

Heck with Nathan buying Firefly - SAVE THE CHOCOLATE!!! I do NOT want to be telling "uphill both ways" stories about how "I remember when you could buy Reese's peanut butter cups for $1.25 - not ¥100!!"

Don't get me started about the problems with the set in the BDM, it is one of my three golden reasons I dislike the BDM, the set seems fake, it looks different than the show, the lighting is different and thus, for me, the energy is completely off kilter. I watch it and feel like I have Capgras dillusion, "Someone replaced the good ship Serenity with some fake set that no one seems to recognize as fake except me, I'm the only one who really knows what is going on, everyone else is being fooled, and they don't even know it". ...

Yeah I agree with Channain, a world without chocolate is like a night without darkness, possible in extreme northern regions but not something I really would do well with. Then again that's a bad example because I've always wanted to see that: Okay, a world without chocolate is like ... an empty world, :(()

Hi Riona!

If it makes you feel any better, the novelization of the movie explains the changes to the set and the hover mule as Mal finally finding someone to fence the lassiter to and blowing the money on upgrades. Which contradicts the earlier thing about them not having enough money for hydroponics... Maybe he had Kaylee write up a list from most important to least important, and there were some things he couldn't afford after everything else.

Sorry Byte, but that won't change my mind, lighting and energy don't usually change from a good payday. But as I said no one else sees it ... we're doomed ...

Wasn't that strawberry that Kaylee got at the buffet table in "Shindig" dipped in chocolate? And wasn't she unwrapping and eating a piece of chocolate when she was in her quarters (sitting on her bunk) in the very last scene of that episode?

It does seem odd that there wasn't more chocolate in Firefly. It seems like it would be a very valuable commodity to smuggle around the 'verse, and definitely worth stealing from the Alliance. You just know that the Alliance muckity-mucks had chocolate.....

There's a story in this thread just waiting to be written....unless it's already been done?

In all my three years of fanfiction reading and reviewing I don't recall a story about smuggling chocolate, sounds like a good one though, I'd enjoy it probably as long as all my standards are met, as with any story. You could write it.

Simon's birthday cake in "Out of Gas". Kaylee says something about trying to make it as chocolatey as possible.

Yeah, but it's suggested it's not real chocolate because it's basically the same thing they "just had for dinner." The way it sounds is that she had to improvise to make it all taste like chocolate.

I wonder what Kaylee used? Maybe coffee or just anything edible that was brown. She tried so hard.

If the future doesn't have chocolate in it, I don't want to be a part of it.

And yes, chocolate as a luxury (and as it once was) would make a fantastic story.
