After some months of fruitless search, I've yet to find out where a couple of episodes took place....'The Train Job' and 'War Stories', for instance. I read somewhere that in TTJ, the job itself took place on a moon called Ezra. How about WS, though? Did it take place on the same moon, or does the Skyplex orbit a different ball of sand?

And how about 'Heart of Gold'? I don't remember reading a thing about the name of that moon. Any input, anyone?

As I have understood, there has been no word on where HoG took place. Other than a rim world.

For The Train Job, there are 3 possible locations. The first location is the Allaince Freindly Bar on U-Day. This world has 3 "moons" in the sky, background of a scene, aligned in view. When Serenity leaves this atmo, a world with rings around it is in background. Beylix is known to be a ringed planet, but might not be the only one. After the U-Day brawl, River is introduced to Mal by Simon. If River continued to sleep for a couple days after Whitefall in the Pilot, then the U-Day Bar would be a few days distance from Whitefall, if that helps.
The second scene in TTJ is Niska's Skyplex. As established in War Stories, this orbits the planet Ezra. (and Bolles is on Ezra for the transfer in WS, and dies there) Mal state to Inara when leaving the U-Day bar that it will be a couple hours to get to the place that is Niska's Skyplex. No certain data to indicate that the U-Day Bar is on Ezra, or a planet nearby. But in most other episodes, and BDM, orbital distance is more like 10 minutes, so it is less likely that the U-Day Bar is on Ezra.
The 3rd location is the world which Hancock and Paradiso are located on. No maps, subtitles, notations, mentions or other info provides specific location info, so can't be certain this is Ezra. Solely due to proximity, and how Niska treats others, the best guess is that this could also be Ezra. No time is given for how long it takes to travel there.

For War Stories, Bolles and Inara's Councilor are on Ezra, and Mal & Wash get abducted there. Niska's Skyplex still orbits Ezra.

And I guess it doesn't make a whole deal of sense that Mal would try and make a drop on the same planet where he pulled the train job if he thought Niska was still pootling around there....Cool, thanks for the input.

Mal knew Niska orbited Ezra.
Mal went to Ezra to drop of meds with Bolles. Serenity was in orbit on the opposite side of Ezra from Niska, but he still knew Niska was there.
Mal did give back Niska's money to that henchman, but Niska didn't think that was enough.
