MALCOLMXERXES

I just saw this episode last night for the first time, & it's my favourite episode to date (although I have not yet seen my copy of "SHINDIG", yet!)

I was impressed by the fact that the Guest Star was able to create the illusion of being a different body type for each person she encountered.

There was an excellent balance between Comedy & Drama in this episode, which served to advance Plot & reveal Character through clearcut Conflict.

I can hardly wait for next Monday's episode!

Makes me think back to that time when I first saw OMR, which is one of my favorites, too. Makes me long for the time when there were still episodes I hadn't seen yet.

A month and a half until the DVDs... *sigh*

DRAKON,

I shall be sure to wait for “TRASH”, since my entertainment is directly proportionate to the level of ignorance I enjoy due to my not having read any of the printed matter about the episodes.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

STILLSHINY,

Thank you for your hospitality.

I am anxious to see this new “Browncoat T-shirt”.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

CAPTBAGGYTROUSERS,

What makes this episode 1 of your favourites, please?

I can certainly understand your longing to be in my position of not having seen the series, yet.

…As well as having a relatively short time to await the DVD box set!

As I become more and more jaded in my reactions to TV and movies, more and more what I've come to appreciate are genuine surprises. Not plot twists that were unpredictable because they came out of nowhere. Not a huge break in the style or narrative to accommodate a left hand turn (except on the Simpsons: they can break all the rules).

OMR constantly surprised me, from the wonderful character interactions of the crew as they celebrated on Triumph, to Mal's marriage, subsequent betrayal (which, no, I didn't see coming), Jayne offering Mal Vera, Saphron's attempted seduction of Wash and Inara...

Most shows, even good ones, usually set up dominos in the first few acts then proceed to knock them down. You can look ahead and say to yourself "Uh huh... Right, get the evidence from the lab, call the courthouse, it was the wife, roll credits, we're done." With OMR, I could not see where the road was going, I was just happy to be along for the ride.

CAPTBAGGYPANTS,

Thank you for your comprehensive reply to my question.

I do not find that I am becoming “jaded in my reactions to TV & movies”, although I understand what you mean.
Rather, I find that I am more willing to suspend my disbelief when a programme like FIREFLY™ comes along, however briefly it may last.
I’m not a fan of Deus ex machine, so everything that happened in this episode was a genuine delight to me, even the fact that the Judas goat companion seemed to metamorphosise physically for each individual seduction, as though she could make herself appear to be whatever body type her target favoured.

The various “death shows” fit the profile you laid out, which is why I tend to avoid them, for they tend to use “DNA” every 3rd word in a sentence.

Hate to be nit-picky, but why did Vera have to be fired from inside a suit? Any firearm more modern than a matchlock will work perfectly well in vaccum. Why a space faring civilzation would make a firearm that could not be fired in a vaccum is beyond me. There has been talk of making hyper-velocity ram-jet guns, which would require an atmosphere, but then it would need atmosphere all the way to the target.

Like I said, sorry to be nit-picky. But Firefly has good physics everywhere else (silent engines/gunfire in space), so I am suprised they did not catch this one.

Will it? I guess there are sparks in space, right? Hmmm I hadn't thought this one all the way through.

I did like in "OiS" when Jayne said that Vera'd barely pierce the hull of ship... always thought it was strange that spaceships are supposed to survive the thousands of micrometeorites that are out there but yet one bullet could spell doom for everyone. Glad Joss et al went through more thought with Firefly.

Simple. Joss asked someone, got the response that it required oxygen, used that. Later admitted it was a mistake when he discovered it was incorrect.

Also, they are idiots on that ship, so its quite possible no one knew otherwise right(especially Jayne)? :)

I had a similar initial reaction to seeing that, but in an effort to suspend disbelief I decided there must be something special about Vera that required an atmosphere. For instance with the ram-jet idea it could require air in the barrel to put the bullet on an accurate trajectory, and inertia would carry it to it's target without regard to an atmosphere.

I suppose Jayne might not have known better. The Ram-jet rifles that have been experimented with use a conventional cartirdge to get the projectile going. Once in the air it ignites. There would be no need for a warhead since it would be going several thousand meters per second on impact. More exciting are the electromagnetic accelerator, or rail guns. Back in the 80s the military was playing with one that would launch a 20mm projectile at over 40,000m/s, or about 50 times the velocity of a modern rifle bullet.

Getting back to the plot, I did not see that coming. Too bad though. Lots of room for character development there if she was what she was pretending to be.

I also just watched it for the first time. I love the offer of "Vera" made by Jayne. That was such an aweseom scene.

Book telling Mal about the "Special Hell" there were just too many good scenes in this one!!

The best scene was at the very end when Mal confronted Inara about why the 'fell'. When he walked away saying "I knew you let her kiss you" The look on Inara's face was absolutely pricelss!! I have not laughed that good in a long time!!

If you loved this ep, you absolutely must watch the deleted scene from it. It's just as hilarious as the rest of the episode. It's a shame that it had to be cut for time.

If you liked Christina Hendricks (Saffron), you should be pleased with the other guest stars as well. Edward Atterton, Larry Drake, Melinda Clarke, Richard Brooks to name a few. This show had bar-none THE best guest stars! They really complimented the show. Very talented actors/actresses. Reminded me of some of the B5 eps (like the one with Wayne Alexander as the Inquisitor). Firefly so ROCKS!!!

I may not recognize the names you gave but I did recongize several high profile actors from:

"The Sentinal"
"Dark Man"

There were others too but I do not recall names or where I seen them before, I was very impressed with those they cast into the show as "supporting" roles.

I always did like Larry Drake, try to catch all his pics...(even ::sob:: Dr Giggles), but seeing Melinda Clark again was the icing on the cake. If you haven't seen her Zombified performance in Return of the Living Dead 3.... well, at one point, the thought crossed the mind,"Well... technically, she's not totally dead... so it's more like borderline necrophilia..."
Oops, did I say that out loud?

"In space no one can hear you scream... but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try if I feel the need to."

My Fav scene from this episode is:

At the beginning when the outlaws have the coach pulled up and the badguy was saying "after that u gunna give me some one on one time with the missus"

and Jayne replies "whoah u might want to reconsider that last part, see I married me a powerful ugly creature"

to which Mal responds "how can u say that? how can u shame me in front of new people?"

Always laugh at that scene..

That's adorable. The whole thing is adorable. I am, much as always, late to the party, and pleasantly surprised to see familiar people. Malcolm, I know you from Rosemary Edghill's mailing list.

I just had a chance over the weekend to sit down and watch ALL of Firefly (not the deleted scenes, just what Netflix has available). It was quite an experience!

This is precisely why I like Trash better than Our Mrs. Reynolds. The twists and turns in that episode outdo the original :)

Of course, the Special Hell speech is probably second to the fixing the bible/hair enchanges between Book and River for pure comic genius in the show.

"If you take sexual advantage of her, you're
going to burn in a very special level of hell.
A level they reserve for child molesters and
people who talk at the theater."
