The word Firefly was on my mind as it all ways is and I was thinking, is that a good name for a TV show.
Could Joss have done better.

what else could the show have been called?

"Captian Malcolm Reynolds verse slayer"

Ok mybe Firefly was the only way to go

I love the name of the series. It's just so appropriate, I think.

Though I'll admit... when my friends converted me, I thought they were talking about Grave of the Fireflies for whatever reason. Haha.

But I think Firefly was the only way to go.

MWAHAHA

When I saw it in the tv guide, I thought it might be an adaptation of that crappy Piers Anthony novel of the same name.

I am ashamed to admit that I knowingly chose not to watch it when it aired. (ashamed because at the time, a friend of mine was a 'Nielson Family'-- I per-maybe-haps could have influenced the show's ratings a little bit.)

I feel like I just told Aunt May that it's my fault Uncle Ben is dead.

That aside, and without the love I have for the 'verse influencing me, I have to say that the name is kind of weak. It in no way captures the thrust of the show.

Might as well call it '03-K64'

I am, however, hard pressed to think of anything better.

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

I personally think that the name is very appropriate. The Firefly-class ship houses our favorite characters, whom the show revolves around; and, they are but a mere annoyance to the Alliance, something like a small insect buzzing in their ear.

Does that even count as a penny?

I love Joss's explanation for why he used it - 'fire' and 'fly' being two kind of actiony, powerful words, which, when combined become something quite insignificant. And our heroes were gloriously insignificant. Unfortunately, going by the title alone, it makes the show seem pretty insignificant to anyone scanning the listings.

But, the fact is, this show was never easy to wrap up in a neat little marketable package... whether by a title or even an ad.

TRAVELER

A firefly is a wonderous insect with its tail glowing in the night. I does not sting or bite. So most people feel no danger from them and are attracted to their light. Thus Serenity attracts all sorts of people. From Kaylee who is the kindess person in the verse to Jayne who is looking for a haven that will bring him quick cash and maybe some women along the way. Once inside, whatever reason that attracted them is forgotten as they become a crew. It started with Mal. He took one glance at this vessel and no other ship was worthy. Zoe could not believe he paid money for such a run down Fei Go. But she stayed, even if it was just to be with Mal. Then the others followed. Serenity kept picking them up. Serenity really is the tenth character in the series.

The show could have been called Serenity, but that was name Mal choose. Firefly describes the type of vessel. Its glowing tail when it goes to full thrust. The first episode made a point of showing us this tail right away when they run from the Alliance vessel. I like how Jayne says, "lets moon em" in that scene. Gotta love Jayne.

So I'm going out on a limb here and saying Joss wanted to make the ship a home where the passengers feel safe and a sense of wonder that this insect provides. And fireflys are like that.

Has anyone ever asked Joss if he came up with name firefly and then designed the ship to look like the insect or did they design the ship and realize it looked like a firefly? I'll have to check the interviews and see if he mentions that.

In one episode when Wash is trying to convince Zoe to see the planet, but she hates the core planets and refuses to leave the ship, Simon tries to tell her about some of the sites on the planet. He mentions a luminescence lake. Well that is what the firefly insect uses to produce their light. Their tails are luminescent. I believe the episode was "Ariel".

Well as always I ramble. But you people keep bringing up the most interesting topics.

I aim to ramble

I think the ship design came first. And, it's always nice to read a good ramble.

"firefly" has a very nice ring to it, but i have to say it doesn't say much about the show. it's not very descriptive and it doesn't make people say, "well, that sounds interesting, I'm gonna see that". "Firefly" might as well be some kind of Nature documentary on insects to the uninitiated.
"Nothin' in the 'Verse" would sound much more like a Scifi series. Or maybe "The Rim-Runners", or simply "Serenity" or to be more descriptive "Spaceship Serenity".

My favorite thus far.

But!! "Would a rose by any other name" ......? as the title of this thread says....

I remember when my daughter brought a young man who had grown up in L.A. to visit us one summer, we drove back to our sleepy little town in southwest Missouri from Tulsa, OK ( where their plane had landed) on the Will Rogers Turnpike. On the border between Missouri and Oklahoma used to be a place they called the Buffalo Ranch.. right there where we turned off we drove past field after field of planted crops... and the air above them all were just filled with fireflies. It was beautiful and the young man, very city, very street exclaimed... "What are those?" his voice just filled with wonder. He went out every evening he was here and looked at them and the stars.

I think Firefly ( despite the drawback that it didn't exactly explain what our show was...) is the perfect name... I feel that exact same wonder when I watch it.
