I watched bushwhacked again today, and while "Our mrs. Reynolds" is my overall favorite episode, I thik that this might have been the best done one. Remember when John Carpenter made halloween? There was very little gore in that movie, as most of it was left to your imagination (good lord alone knows what Rob Zombie will do with it, but i am sure it will be good). bushwhacked is the same. The sight of the tricycle and the ball are much more chilling to me that seeing the chewed and skinned corpses of the kids that owned them.

One quuestion I would put forth........why do you all suppose it is that jayne is so terrified of Reavers? Sure, everyone is scared of Reavers, but jayne (big badass that he is) was right on the edge of a panic meltdown.

I woudl love to hear everyone's theories.

Oh, I undertand that, but Jayne is ready to soil himself, very out of character for him........I wonder what he saw in his past regarding Reavers.

Again, this is what I love about this site, and what makes me do so much posting since I've joined.....with such a short-lived run, the 'verse is wide open with questions for us to find answers to.

As Zoe says, Jayne, you'll scare the women. He does express more fear than you would think the fighting brute would have. It just seems to me that being raped and eaten alive is not a manly death at all. He can go into a fight with guns and not show a fear of death, but Reavers are just creepifying to him. It shows his vulnerable side. If he was a stoic warrior that never showed fear, we wouldn't like him as much. Also, it's just funnier this way.

reavers have no fear. they are killing machines. they keep coming and coming until they get you. you can't chase them off or reason with them.

jayne is a big tough killer type, but he is not beyond reason. the thought of something that he can't scare away naturally scares him.

he also seems to have a revulsion to senseless violence. in the bdm he's the one that says "turn it off" when they are watching the vid of the reaver attack on miranda.

my question isn't why is jayne so bugged out by the reavers, but why isn't everyone else.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

The reason Joss gives for Jayne showing the most fear of the Reavers is exactly so the audience will know just how scary these things are. The biggest, baddest merc on the block comes close to soiling himself at the very idea, you know they've got to be hideous, frightening, the stuff of nightmares.
And everyone else is afraid and bugged out, it's jsut Jayne shows it the most. Maybe because so little does scare him that when he shows fear it's exaggerated. He never really learned to be stoic like Zoe and Mal, and he's very vocal when things affect him, so he's not shaking in wordless terror like Kaylee and Inara. Simon isn't shown as being totally bugged out because he doesn't fully understand Reavers, not having lived with the threat. Wash gets very freaked out about Reavers, but it's closer to the wordless terror. Jayne, being Jayne, is loud and lets off steam by talking or yelling. He doesn't shake in his boots, but rather says as defiantly as possible that he wants nothing to do with it. And as I said, this serves the purpose of letting the audience know what a scary thng we're dealing with. It's made even scarier in Bushwhacked that we never see the Reavers themselves.

I like Phoenix's take on that. I'd have to agree with that.

You know what's funny? Somehow, when I watched all of the Firefly episodes in 1 week about 4 months back before I came here, I apparently skipped over this episode entirely. I never did get around to watching the series again yet because I know that I would devote an entire weekend to it. It wasn't until 2 or 3 weeks back that I saw it on Sci-Fi and I was like... "what the hell? I don't remember any of this! Was I that high?". And then I started to think crazy thoughts like they were making new episodes or something. I'm glad I didn't think that for too long because I would have been disappointed again.

Anyways. I don't know how I missed it, but this is definately one of the best episodes on the show.

everyone else is afraid of reavers, sure, but they only seemed to show it when reavers are around. the rest of the time they act more like reavers are just something to be avoided, like second hand smoke.

space is huge. amazingly vastly huge. so why get all worked up over something that you could probably avoid for your whole life in the amazingly vast hugeness of space.

we needed someone to be more vocal about the need for active avoidance of reavers. otherwise, they are as scary as second hand smoke.

the fact that it's jayne gets the point across perfectly. when the baddest mf in the 'verse says reavers are scary, they really really really must be scary.

wait, was that basically the same thing that you just said. hell, i think my brain has stopped working. it's late. lost my point. bedways is rightways now. need a bit a spatchka.
