What if R and S were originally meant to be Asian? That would certainly firm up the Anime connection (even if superficially), and let us see some folks who were native to the ubiquitous Chinese spoken.

Even if Joss never spoke of this, I can't help but suspect this was in there at some point.

I can’t consider the thought of River or Simon being fully Asian it just would not fit in my minds eye. No I think they made the characters just how they should be. I think if they had been Asian then it would not make the mix of cultures in the verse seem as real as it did with none Asian River and Simon. I also think it would have not at all aided to connect anime to the series… no too much bias in anime.

The court of this obsession, is abstracted from possession which when the worlds of outside in fall.

Well, their last name is Tam, so my guess is that there is asian somewhere in their bloodline, maybe not much, but some.

I think maybe River and Simon were meant to be Asian. I can imagine an Asian River. Also Asian people are stereotypically clever...

Although Simon doesn't really sound like a very Asian name

The commentary to Shindig mentioned that the writers wanted to put people in with Asian-sounding surnames - hence Wing as well as Tam - regardless of how the parts were eventually cast. This leads me to believe that they didn't "intend" anything in the casting of Sean and Summer.

I think in the far future, people would have all melded together so much that race wouldn't play that much of a role. Perhaps Simon and River have Asian blood in them - and a hodgepodge mixture of everything else. Always thought River was a particular Asian name.

Makes me wonder where the Asians are in the series. We see them in the periphery but as yet none have actually made themselves known.

Race is not important, really. If they were, would it make any difference? They were raised wealthy and super intelligent. I'd go more for genetically enhanced. Guessing that Simon didn't have what the Hands of Blue were looking for from said enhancement. He got the brains but River got the added desire for performance, hence the dancing, a perfect setup for what Blue Sun needed.
If there were asian in skin, the genetics would remain the more important factor.
Pure speculation, however.
