oo.. candles. We should all create big firefly shrines with lots of shiny candles. But i shouldn't be allowed near them, since i'm well known for catching my hair on fire.

Either that or we could just use the candles to erm... avenge our show by lighting Fox on fire? (hey.. i did rip up a fox add in a local paper. My friends wanted to kill me for being obsessive, but it made me feel better. Maybe next time i'll burn the adds and catch my hair on fire.)

Me too, only not with the lighting candles thing. What is it with women and the candles anyway?

Your poor testosterone-warped heart would never understand.

Actually, I don't physically light candles. It's a metaphoric reference to the religious (Catholic) lighting of candles for prayer.

I have a couple candles around the house, mostly just for looks. Haven't burnt them in earnest since college and that was just to cover up the smell of the... you know.

In my fantasy, I can't get past the part where we run toward each other like a movie from the 70s and embrace, practically weeping with joy.

How big a goober am I, that my movie star fantasies stop at hugging. Well, there'll probably be compliments too.

Sarah,
You're not a goober. Well maybe you are, but it doesn’t sound like a bad thing to be. Goobers are chocolate covered peanuts right? Yummy. Anyway, your fantasy is your fantasy. I've got a few that end with hugs... and other stuff. There's an interesting thread. What's your firefly fantasy?

I am a goober. I'm a big geek.

Maybe I'm just lame. Maybe I'm insecure and egomaniacal and....

Yow. Somebody was talking about pie. Let's have that and hugging and compliments!

Kaythryn, what's your fantasy?

Let me try:

"Excuse me, Doc?" Kaythryn hung on the door to the infirmary, looking paler than normal.

"Yes?" Doctor Tam turned, stylus still in hand from where he had been making notes.

"It's nothing, really," Kaythryn tried to step over the threshhold but began to sway. In a flash, Simon was next to her, supporting her. "It's just, it's this stupid knee is all. Turned it the other day and it's only getting worse."

"Let me see," he said, leading her to the examination table. In one practiced motion he swept up her pants leg, revealing a harshly bruised knee.

"I've seen worse," he grinned up at her, dark eyes flashing.

"Oh yeah?"

"Yes." He touched her shin and electricity sizzled up and down her leg. He grinned, his lips slightly lopsided, looking boyish.

...

Okay... really got to stop. Really getting out of hand.

Now I have to confess my fantasy??? Now there's a fantasy confessional thread?? No one ever told me I'd have to confess ....

Argh!!!

Incidentally, I subscribe to the Washington theory. I realize it's boring, but I'm kind of the boring type, and while I like the idea of a nickname, I woulda thunk his wife would call him by his actual name.

As for Jerry Lee? If he had said it, I just assumed Jerry Lee was a reference to some hotshot famous pilot, and Mal was congratulating him--y'know, like if you were ... I dunno, like, if you were a hockey player, and your captain referred to you as Gretzky, even though your name was really Ben.

Um, I'm getting those looks, kinda like I'm speaking in Riverspeak. I'll go 'way now and be quiet. Maybe I'll hunt rabbits. Or light a candle .

I'm sure it's legitimate animosity man. I did videography for a prom Saturday night and wow--strange all over. Eerie-ass, even.

Got to reinforcing my general thought that I won't go to a HS reunion. I was a band-star trek-drama-chessclub geek and Browncoats, at BHS it did not get much geekier than that.

Yes. If you promise to be a man about it and not cry when I tell you that there's a difference between "to" and "too."

Email's in the profile. Send as a microsoft word attachment if you please. My turnaround time is usually pretty good, but expect 7 days just to be on the safe side. It'll depend on whether or not I'm making much headway with the new BC.

My 10 yr. came up last year...did not even cross my mind to go. Not only was I a chessclub/star treak/heavy metal/stephen king weirdo...but my friends and I started our own club...The Sci-Fi Fantasy Horror club, which incorporated all the geek interests in literature, movie and gaming forms....not so affectionately known by the general populace of the school as The Satanist Club. As for the topic of this thread I never saw any hint of any name but Wash in the series..although for awhile I thought they were saying Walsh...wrong, but there ya go.

Kaythryn, I already have Goddom.

As the self proclaimed pie god of Washington state (See earlier post between me and Sarah, above.)I felt I'd withhold her pie so she could think on her actions. I admit, I'm in the wrong and Sarah's pie will be returned to her promtly. Maybe I'll send her one, but it might end up all smush-ed by the time it reaches her in Alabama.

Still, heathens? That was kinda harsh.

i think you're all crazy to get this worked up over his name.

imdb does its cast posts from production material - that makes it as official as anything we have.

the only way to undo that would be a conflicting statement in the show - which isn't happening any time soon.

jerry lee warren - yeah it's a crappy name - but he's a texan - `least the actor is, and texans often have crappy names. that's why he goes by wash.

maybe he was adirty kid. looked like a surfer when he came on board - maybe he eschewed the shower until mal got pissed and yelled at him to "wash!"

least thats my theory.

cheers

p.s. let it be known that i for one, greatly enjoy the character of kaylee - even tho polls show that most of you don't!

Yeah, not a big deal either way. I feel that anything that's not said on the show itself isn't necessarily canon. IMDB is good, but not infallible by any means.

If "Jerry Lee Warren" were correct it would mean Wash and Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye have the same middle name. That's a little odd, but not that unlikely a choice since Anglo and Chinese cultures dominate in the "New West."

Kaylee is my favorite character too, by the way. Not just because I have a huge crush on her.

That is a factor, however.

I have OMR on my computer right now and I keep listening to that scene over and over again. I hear "Jerry Lee" (very clearly); however, I'm now convinced that the statment Mal makes is directed at Kaylee. Mainly so because of her following line. But he does say "Jerry Lee". Perhaps a blooper?

Though, I do agree with Matt, the character is fictional. I'm thinkin' some people are developing an unhealthy attachment. Star Trek fanatics come to mind.

I've never been much of a fan of the Bond films, but loved the books, and I agree with you Talrius. I never would have thought of Brosnin as James Bond, but I think he's done a good job of it, and hopefully he'll get a script that will prove us right.

By way of backing my opinion, I can tell you almost the exact moment I thought he was a good James Bond. I don't remember which movie it was, but I think it was the first one he was in. There was a firefight going on, lots of automatic weapons fire, and Bond was behind cover, reloading his weapon. While he's looking down at the weapon, a bullet ricochets off the wall, and he just tilts his head away, still looking down at what he's doing.

THAT, my friends, is James Bond.

I couldn't figure out what was wrong with you people, Jerry does not sound like Kay. So after Realone crashed my computer many times despite my attempted fixes the file magically opened with a different program despite the fact it wouldn't give me that option before.

And I listened, expecting to hear Kaylee. Sorry, he says Jerry Lee. JERRY. Not Kay, JERRY. I wish that I had noticed it the first time around. It could be a slip on Nathan Fillion’s part, or a slip on Mals part, or a slip on Nathan’s part left to be explained as a slip on Mal’s part. Or it could be that Wash’s name is Jerry Lee, regardless that is what was said.

The way the camera is used implies that Mal was talking to Wash

Wash: We got it! (Mal regards Wash, and the console around him) It’s not pretty but we can steer enough to turn the hell around.
Mal(Facing directly at Wash, head pointed to him, eyes on him): Nice work Jerry Lee.
Close shot of Wash, hugged by Zoe.
Camera goes to Kaylee: Wasn't soon enough to help.
Mal (turns to Kaylee, while looking at her and putting hand on her shoulder): Hey, lot easier to pull things apart than it is to make em’ right. You're still the best damn Mechanic floating.

Sorry guys but he was talking to Wash, you can say that it was just Nathan messing up, but he said Jerry Lee, and he said it to Wash.

Wrong. I wouldn't argue this point any further except that I've got something else to say... but I'll get to that in a minute. P.s. Why do people keep bringing up these annoying ass posts?

For Chris, I don’t have the computer download version of OMR, but I do have the possibly higher quality DVD version from TRS and damn it, I’m listening to it right now, so here is what I’m seeing.

Wash: We got it! (Mal looks around at the working consoles) It’s not pretty but we can steer enough to turn the hell around.
Mal (He is facing forward looking at the working console as Kaylee walks into his line of vision--in front of his and a little to the side-- pulling off her work gloves): Nice work Kaylee.
Close shot of Wash, hugged by Zoë. (Mal congratulated Kaylee, as Zoë is congratulating her husband)
Camera goes to Kaylee as : Wasn't soon enough to help.
Mal (turns to Kaylee, while looking at her and putting hand on her shoulder): Hey, lot easier to pull things apart than it is to make em’ right. You're still the best damn Mechanic floating. (He kisses her)

Now, why would our sweet Kaylee say “it wasn’t soon enough to help” if she didn’t think it was her fault that she fixed it late? She is to nice to say anything mean about it being Wash’s fault and him not getting it fixed “soon enough to help”. So, if she said that in reference to herself then Mal must of said “good work” to Kaylee. Also, Wash was probably pushing buttons and waiting for the console stuff to turn on as Kaylee worked on the mechanical parts that needed fixed shown by her pulling off the work gloves after, I‘m guessing, working under the console, and the fact that she is the mechanic and all.

Okay, second part. To make a long story short, I was thinking about Zoë and Wash’s relationship today and was wondering if anyone knew, or had any good guesses on how long Zoë and Wash had been married as of “Serenity“. I was thinking about the kind of arguments they’ve have and I can’t decide if they’ve been married for a pretty long while, or if they’re pretty new to each other. I’m just curious.

I wouldn't respond but you asked. We know that Wash works on his own console, as he is shown doing it before Kaylee is hired. Wash is the one who sets up a push button call us home signal (Out of Gas), and Wash is the one who modifies a beacon (Out of Gas). All of this says that he can work with mechanical/electronic things, and that he does.

Further Wash says “we” did it, meaning him and Kaylee. Once again, look at where Mal is facing, he is looking right at Wash when he says, “Nice work.” Mal makes no indication that he sees Kaylee until she says, “Not soon enough to help.” Sorry but if he says, "Kaylee," it’s hilarious because the truth is that he is speaking to Wash, he would also be doing a lousy job of pronouncing it.

Note how he turns to the person to whom he is speaking, he turns to Kaylee when he speaks to her. I can’t think of an instance in which he does not face the person he is talking to unless there is a pressing reason not to (the only ones of those I’ve noticed is when he is holding a gun on someone else, or someone is holding a gun on him.) Show me one, go ahead, find a place where he is facing in another direction, or looking at someone other than the person he is speaking to. Remember one in which his life or others doesn’t depend on looking somewhere else wouldn't qualify.

You said you have a good quality version, look at his eyes, he is looking right at Wash.

Now I can accept (with difficulty) that Nathan messed up, but the show supersedes the script, so he said it, and now it’s Wash’s name unless something else comes along to replace it.

Ok, I just watched/listened to that scene about 10 times from the download here: http://versaphile.com/download/firefly.html
and Mal definitely says "Kaylee"...if you listen carefully you can absolutely make out the "K" sound. Now perhaps there are other copies of this floating around somewhere with a slightly different quality audio or something that makes it harder to make out, but this version is quite clear.

p.s. 100th post in this thread! Woo-hoo! ;)
