I know they are all played by fairly young actors (Except Ron Glass), but aside from specific support for ages, they seem somewhat different, emotionally as well as mentally. Should this have carried over physically whenever River sees and hears their minds?

That's an interesting question!! :)

I'd say...

Mal:
Actual - 31 to 34
Mental - both older and younger. He considers himself a mean old man and he's about as bitter and stubborn as one. Could be 50 to 60 on that front. But he's also emotionally retarded like a 12-year-old sometimes, hehe. He's his healthiest when he actually acts his age, both mature but with a world of opportunities ahead of him.

Zoe:
Actual - same as Mal, perhaps a tad younger
Mental - ageless. She's mature and adult in a pretty unchanging way that doesn't shift with age.

Wash:
Actual - same as Zoe and Mal
Mental - Early twenties. He's young at heart without being helpless.

Kaylee:
Actual - 22-ish
Mental - 15 to 17. She's childlike and innocent but also unabashedly sexual, much less self-reliant than her age implies.

River:
Actual - 16/17
Mental - ancient and 14, both at once. Genius insanity is hard to measure in age.

Jayne:
Actual - anywhere from 33 to 40-ish
Mental - twenty-something, he's pretty static and mentally immature, without planning on much of a future, so I doubt he bothered to develop his mind past the point that he started up the mercenary work.

Inara:
Actual - late twenties, 27-ish
Mental - a somewhat ageless drift, both younger (personal emotional experience around 20) and older (mental maturity around late 30's).

Simon:
Actual - 24/25
Mental - a proper 40-year-old gentleman who likes his routines.

Book:
Actual - oh God, no idea. I'm bad with older folk.
Mental - Somewhat younger, but not much. Sometimes he appears mentally caught in the age that he left whatever military position he held before becoming a Shepherd. Plus, his good physical condition keeps him younger.

The Mental age thing is a bit weird. Put Simon Tam in an Haspital and he becomes much older. I belive that in terms of 'mental age' which is also always hard to judge, Mal and Book are on the same level, having followed similar but different paths.

Kaylee could possible be described as the youngest by that rekoning, but she also had the furthest to come, growing up on a backwater planet or moon, with no real prospects or education except what she gained by working for her father. Yet put her in with a machine and she mature ten, twenty times over.

So...You have to take that character as you know him/her and let that knowledge determine how you think that they would think. There are very few dumb humans, some of the people I knew in High School and at the University were geniuses when it came to things that they actually cared about, whereas many of the book smart people (like me) are absolute dunces when it comes to those types of things.

Whcih brings up another point, IQ designation is simply false, and lacking in the ability to judge the capacity of the Human mind. Sorry it is just a pet peeve of mine, I believe that a lot of people are shorted by the standards of our times.

I think that's about right. We can't have Simon and Kaylee too much older than River. In 'Safe', they flash back to the Tam Estate when Simon and River were both children. Simon looked about 12 and River about 8. Kaylee, I think is just a bit older than Simon. I made Wash younger than Zoe because he seemed the type to like his women a little older than he is.

Considering the impact of relativity theory on age at near light speed travel, who knows how old they would be; however, this doesn't seem to be taken into account in the episodes. While Inara was in the companion house not traveling around in space, her age did not change in relation to the crew. While Book was on Haven, his age did not change in relation to the crew either.

Not to sound petty, but I always thought the scene of River/Simon's escape in the BDM was when he broke her out before the series started. I never thought of it as a recapture her and let her brother break her out a second time kind of thing. That would make the Alliance very stupid in my view.
But for the ages, Seems that some of the other posts have it pretty nailed.

I was surprised to find out that Adam Baldwin was born in 1962. He doesn't look that old (a year younger than me). While watching the DVD today with my nephew, I mentioned that to him, and he agreed. He obviously keeps in shape.

At any rate, I would think the characters are approximately the same age as the actors who portray them -- with the possible exception of Summer/River. I believe it said somewhere that River was a teenager, but Summer is now 24 years old.

Kaylee is 20

It doesn't mention Wash, though he should be close to Mal in age.

We know for a fact that River is 17, because it has been mentioned many a time.

You're right. I watched the escape sequence again very carefully and "the ship from the shafted" is not Serenity. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
