Getting towards the end of the year, and it seems like slim pickens.

But Alita was this year, right? Is that the best film this year?

What films do you feel were the best?
Performances?
Best CGI?
Best SFX?
Best story?
Most entertaining?
Most worthy of Oscar nods?

Other films mentioned in this thread:

Cold Pursuit - story, performances
John Wick 3 Parabellum - for nonstop action/fight scenes.
Angel Has Fallen - story/plot

Glass

Joker - best film, best performance

Yesterday - feel good

Nomis - story.
Richard Jewell - wonderful storytelling.
Jumangi Next Level - entertainment, ignore the story holes.

I should have mentioned Glass, if that was this year.

And was Deadpool 2 in 2019? Nope, May 2018.

Only seen two... Shazam and Joker.

I honestly don't see how anything else that came out this year could possibly be better than Joker was. Not only was that the best portrayal of The Joker by a million miles, but that was the most amazing acting performance I've ever seen in my life. After what happened to Heath Ledger, I'm genuinely concerned for Joaquin Phoenix's well being, and I hope that he's getting whatever psychiatric care that I'm sure he needs to remove himself from the character of Arthur Fleck.

I have not seen Joker, but of the rest nothing is better than Alita for me, so far.

I think the story could have been better fleshed out, but that's because I had exactly zero introduction to the characters or the world before seeing the movie.

Maybe I need to see it again, when it comes out OnDemand, I'll rent it. Which now that I think about it, it's probably available. Or should be, as it came out long before Godzilla KOTM, and I already own that on disc.

Guess I'll look for it.

I still need to see that one. It's on my extremely short list of 2019 movies I'm interested in.

I also had no intro to the world other than trailers. I agree the story could have been fleshed out, but I felt it was still the best thing since Arrival, Edge of Tomorrow, Rogue One.

Arrival was a real mind bender. Edge was entertaining, but for me the underlying story was a bit much. Rogue One was pretty good. Solid, but not fantastic.

Did you ever see Moon ? I know it's been a while since it came out, but I like it about on the level as The Martian. Just my preference, I guess.

Moon was great.

It was also the first movie I saw on a 1080 TV years later after seeing it first on a tube TV so it was almost like getting to discover it twice.

Yeah, I'm gearing up to buy a new TV and seeing some newer movies on it. I still remember seeing the difference of getting HD back in the early 2000's, and what a leap that was from LD.

Another movie getting good reviews but isn't exactly in my wheel house - Ford vs Ferrari

IDK if some are intentionally fake virtue signaling so as to create controversy and drive up interests or not, but it seems Bale and Damon do put on excellent performances. Bale in particular, if we're to believe this one critic.

Yeah. It probably won't be nearly as potent as an experience for you to watch Moon in HD now, but outside of one or two brief glances of HD screens in stores before that point, this was the first time I had ever sat down and watched anything on one, back when my brother and Sister-in-Law got their first one.

It blew my mind at the time. The first time I saw Moon, I didn't think to complain about the quality of the picture on my old man's 32" screen. That's what I'd been watching stuff on all my life up to that point. But when I saw it in HD on a much larger screen and it was like I had a window looking directly into that space station... wow.

Honestly, rather than a huge special effects fest, I think that a movie like Moon was the perfect one to see as my first HD experience. Especially since I had already seen it before in SD and held it in such high regard.

Definitely check out Moon again in HD either way. No bad excuse to re-watch that one, I figure.

I hope to add JoJo Rabbit to the list of movies I've seen so far, yet I can't seem to find a theatre local that's playing it.

I'll need to add Nomis, Richard Jewell, Jumanji Next Level. Not Skywalker.

I was just on the-numbers.com looking at the weekend box office and saw JoJo Rabbit on the list. I'd never even heard of it before you mentioned it here.

Man... good luck finding a theater playing it. The first week it played it was only shown in 5 theaters. November would have been the time to catch it since it had nearly 800 the whole month and even topped out at around 1000 for one week in mid November. There were only 209 theaters showing it last week, and Friday night that was cut down to 125.

I think you're going to have to wait to stream it.

It looks pretty interesting though.

That certainly isn't what I thought the movie was going to be about when you mentioned the title. I thought it was an animated flick or something.

Kind of funny. I'm imagining what Little Monsters would have been like if you swapped out a dumb demon getting Fred Savage into trouble with a dumb Hitler getting Fred Savage into trouble.

Has anybody seen JoJo Rabbit or Ford vx. Ferrari? I had hoped to see FvF but the run had ended when I looked.
