Had kept myself spoiler free, for the most part, save for hearing that it wasn't your typical horror movie. That left much up to interpretation, though.

I didn't even look to see who was in it. so watching was quite the surprise.

For me, having seen Doll House and Angel, there were some very familiar faces, and well... I felt like I'd seen parts of this before.

On the one hand, I was sorta bummed, as I felt not a lot of effort had gone into making the movie, as they just rehashed some stuff they'd used on t.v. Though it was very well done, I must add.

On the other hand, watching with one who wasn't familiar in things from Mutant Enemy... it was a blast to see their reaction. They didn't know what to make of it. So far outside the realm of cookie cutter slasher/horror movies, I think it really toyed with their mind.

Hee hee. What a cool flick

I generally don't run out and see movies right as they come out. I make rare exceptions, from time to time, but even though this was a Joss film, I kept it on the ' to see' list. Then I had a chance to watch w/ a lady friend, who was not at all versed in things Whendon, and I made the call. Blew her mind a bit, too. Hee hee.

I'll hold off on " Much Ado " too, for a time. So many familiar faces, it's tough to not watch.

Grrrr.

In due time, though... in due time.

I hate slasher films. I loooooove Cabin in the Woods. Joss is brilliant.

He was both paying homage to, and sending up, the whole Slasher genre. A gift to us Whedon fans who know better, but to those who don't "get it" well it's their loss.

To me Joss gave it his best. Still want to see Serenity 2 and Dr. Horrible (Bad Horse cracks me up)....................;-)

Not talking about first run, but it's been on Netflix for a while now.
I agree about Much Ado, although I've heard nothing but good things.....;-)

Were you factoring in how long ago it was made? It did predate Dollhouse, didn't it?

Just sayin', some people are not impressed by Firefly because they've seen all of the cutting edge SFX everywhere in the past 12 years, all copied from Firefly.

The complex in Dollhouse looked like they used the same material from the main reception area of Wolfram and Hart. So, going back that to Angel even , the whole behind the scenes of EVIL Inc, while some what unknown to the general public, wasn't new to me. Funny, yes, but it was also a bit of a let down, as I knew pretty much how it'd play out.

I didn't get past the first killing. Sorry, just because it is Joss doesn't mean I am going to like it. Didn't much care for Angle, Buffy or Dollhouse. Just a few of the episodes.

Try watching the original Haunting.

Not into the Buffyverse, largely due to SMG, but Dollhouse was enjoyable, and I've gotten others hooked on it. Maybe we were just jonesing for more Whedon.

Do you like ANYTHING from Joss ? LOL

Seriously though, I was late to the whole Buffy / Angel 'verse myself. It wasn't until after Firefly that I seriously sat down and dedicated myself to watching Ep 1 / Season 1 of each series, all the way through to the finales of both shows. I haven't followed up via the comics though.

At first, I was reluctant to bother w/ Buffy, simply because I felt that I was a bit outside the target audience. But once I saw how clever the stories and charactes were written, I quickly became addicted.

I've heard less than flattering things about SMG, but to be honest, I never got so wrapped up in the actors themselves to let it influence me. I simply liked the character, and how they wrote for her, and that was enough for me. Whether she was a diva, or stomped kittens in real life, I couldn't really care. Her on screen persona was and remains, imo, very unique. Same w/ Eliza. There's just something about them that goes beyond their hotness, that i really enjoy watching. At least, on screen.

As is often the case, how actors are off screen, might not be all that. So I choose to ignore that , as best I can, and let them do their thing,on screen.

I should have mentioned that I REALLY liked the film, so maybe it was such a letdown to switch to SMG. I had hoped the series would fulfill the promise/potential of the film.

Didn't Joss walk away from , or get replaced, from the movie ? That, or he wasn't allowed to fully develop what he wanted, I can't recall.

So, who would have played Buffy, if not SMG ?

Charisma was up for the part, wasn't she ?

Was the girl from the film not available?

Lisa Jakub. Maybe too young.
Lucy Deakins.
Kim Richards.
Jill Schoelin - she was done dating Brad Pitt by then.

I'm sure there are others I would have loved to see.

Too homely.
Cute, but can she do the physical stuff ?
Too old
Even more too old.

Seriously, the last 2 are older than I am! Please.

I've been catching more trailers of Wayward Pines coming on TV.
Does anybody get the sense this is derived from Cabin In The Woods, or has many similarities to it?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

It's closer to Twin Peaks or the very short-lived Happy Town than Cabin.

I don't recall Twin Peaks being on a contrived set for the players to act out their roles as directed. You meant the TV show?

I have no interest in Wayward Pines due to Shyamalan's involvement, but I do know that nearly every thing I've seen or read about it compares it to Twin Peaks, including that Blake Crouch, the author of the book trilogy it's adapted from, has said that TP was his inspiration.

It may or may not also have some similarities to Cabin, but as I already said, I don't care enough to check it out. For the most part, I'm taking a break from summer TV to read more.

What do you dislike about Shyamalan? Any particular work? General themes or genre that he works?
I may have seen something from him that was annoying, but I cannot recall it at this time.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Just saw that recently. Alan Tudyk is Tucker. VERY 'Cabin in the woods ' vibe to it.

Also, has Chelan Simmons, who I first recall from Wonderfalls ( Gretchen Speck-Horowitz ) , which was produced by Tim Minear.

Tucker & Dale is nearly five years old, has been on DVD/Blu-Ray for four, and is also available on Netflix Streaming and Amazon Prime.

Interesting.
Cabin in the Woods filmed March to May 2009.
Tucker & Dale started filming July 2009.

But Cabin not released until 1012.
