I remember when Buffy was coming to television, how everyone said it had already be done and what more could you squeeze from this story. In other words, there were some doubters (and possibly some haters). Same could be said for Firefly, only the doubt came by way of mixing/mashing genres - western with sci-fi.

Trouble is the naysayers had to eat sh(crow)t.

I mention Buffy/Firefly because the word was that horror - by way of a Cabin in the Woods - was about to be given a facelift. Nailed it!

Joss, that mad scientist/geeky professor, has done it again - raised the stakes, greased the wheel, flimmed the flam, trimmed the sails, Romanced the Stone, hid the salami balls deep in Hollywood's nether regions.
I went to an 8:45 pm showing on Saturday, the theatre in my neighborhood in Queens was about 75% full and I heard lots of laughter, giggles and guffaws. It was both funny and intense - and somewhat creepafying. The FX were spot on, SCARY MONSTERS.....the gags were well-timed and properly set up........the pacing was excellent......the horror to gag to sci-fi quotient was evenly distributed. Awww, folks I tell ya, it was all kinds of awesome. It was beautiful!

I will give nothing away. There were solid performances all around, and a couple of surprises and some familiar faces. Think Buffy meets Dollhouse meets..........well, you get the picture. It is both a horror/sci-fi mash-up and a new twist of storytelling. Fresh and inventive while still providing horror film 101 basics. A send-up of sorts of all the classic horror films, a modern Twilight Zone type of story, dark and twisted with Joss' sense of humor. How deep does that rabbit hole go? Trust me folks, it does not disappoint.

I think Joss will finally get the recognition he deserves for his sick and twisted mind. Go enjoy, and tell people if you like this, you'll love..........get my drift. I think this film will do extremely well and may develop "legs" well into the summer months. It's That Good!

Saw Cabin last night. I found it fair-to-good, not as shocking or groundbreaking as the publicity suggested. I thought it was a fairly typical supernatural horror story with humour and a twist. It would not have been out of place as an episode of Angel, with the cabin as one of Wolfram and Hart's more elaborate undertakings. It certainly displayed Whedon's glee at playing around with and inverting genre conventions. Hopefully, it will add a few new fans to the fold.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

It's enjoyable enough, just not the genre-bending film I was led to expect.

I had tried to stay as spoiler free as possible, and yet I did have a notion of where the story was going to go...and my guess was pretty close. Since it was not as surprising a twist as they were implying, and I thought it was telegraphed fairly early in the movie, I was disappointed that the ending didn't go in a different direction. Can't say anything more so no one else gets spoiled.

Different places have different ways of rating a movie. For Netflix it's a 1-5 star system, with 3 being "liked it." That's about as high as I'm willing to go, and since IMDb.com uses a 1-10 scale, I just rated it a 6 there.

Not sure when it will be released in France or if it will.
Box Office Mojo has not the budget numbers for "Cabin in the Woods" so that i'm not sure if the movie will be profitable, according to the first numbers we have.

Saw it last night. Pretty awesome. Not really scary, but very funny, and an excellent, well-thought-out deconstruction of not just horror films, but horror fans.

Great, great stuff.

I agree 3 stars is about right. I, on the other hand, did not find it predictable save for I know how Joss works. He kills off the characters you like most, etc. There were few flaws, but the most glaring is in the trailers. I don't want to say too much because there are folks that may want to see it within the next few weeks.

Could that be the problem us Joss-aholics face? We love his work so much that we kinda know what's coming? Still though, it was fun and sorta like popcorn, you enjoy the heck out of it while you're popping 'em into your mouth
but (unless you have some type of other snack) you kinda want something else. Empty calories! But enjoyable enough.
Reminds me of the mindless fun you get riding a rollercoaster, thrill a minute then...........ok, next ride.

I really enjoyed it, it had enough horror, gore and humour etc to satisfy and ticked the boxes of all the cliches you'd expect before taking it another way. Ground-breaking? Probably not but it certainly gives a large kick up the arse to the genre.
It was very nice to see some familiar faces and the cast as a whole worked well, with Fran Kranz, Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins (is he ever bad?) being the real standouts.

I think your point may be true if you've seen enough of Joss's stuff I think you can figure out a certain degree of what's going to happen. I didn't find any of the plot particualarly twisty and predicted why things were happening fairly early on, which was confirmed once I saw the 'outlines'. Having said that I didn't expect it to end how it did but I don't consider it a twist ending. Even films like this that go against convention usually finish on a familiar note so it was great to see it not fall into that cliche.

I saw the trailer and then read from folks who'd seen the advance screenings to stay as spoiler free as possible, so I did. In hindsight I think the trailer does give too much away but at least they brought that point up right at the start of the movie and didn't try to turn it into a twist. The trailer can't have been easy to make. If they'd left out all the 'office' bits then it would have just appeared to be your average horror movie that tagged itself as something different. How many times have you seen a horror trailer that pushes itself as 'the best horror since...' etc and then it turns out to be a run of the mill scream and gore fest.
Personally I think they should have added a 10-15 minute intro (with another cast) which played out like a normal horror and used a different monster. Then the movie we saw would take over with the cast that we know.

So overall it works really well and is another example of what Joss and his gang can achieve.
Avengers next week so it's all good, all the time.

Finally got around to seeing it. I liked it. The humor was done really well. However, I didn't find anything in the movie to be particularly scary. So, I don't know about calling it part of the "horror" genre.

I hate trailers. I knew one of the twists just because of the trailer.

I havn't found any movie all that "scary" since I was 12 or so, so that's never been a requirement for something to be "horror" to me. Its more about the tropes of the genre, than actual fear.
