When I first heard about this, I didn't know it was connected to the ALIEN movies. Now, I simply cannot wait. Scott's first sci-fi film in many years. 2012 is heating up to be one of my all time "must see" movie years of....ever!

-Prometheus

-3 stooges

-The Dark Knight Rises

Easily my two most anticpated films of next year. Just saw the new trailers for both movies and I'm eager already. The only reason I'm currently slightly more excited about TDKR is because it arrives first.

Just the mention of Tim Burton or Joss means I'm in. Plus I really hope Samual L Jackson or Robert Downey Jr use a line like 'Joss is Boss' in the interviews. That would be cool to hear it from A-list actors.

I heard/read most of the rumours about Camerons prequel, Sigourney Weaver being attched, the 'reboot' and 'remake' stories, it not actually being connected to an 'Alien' film at all, etc etc. Having seen the trailer and getting glimpses of the space jockey, the derelict and the way the title appears I'm happy with it's 'Alien' connections. Opening night for me.

Really?
The trailer looked appallingly bad and unfunny. I'll admit I never really watched the original stuff (more of a Marx Brothers fan) and I can understand that if you're a fan then you will probably see it at some point but a 'must-see' movie?

3 stooges(I'm a big fan) was always really stupid humor. Laughing at their antics, and violence is the appeal. This new movie from the Farley brothers(Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary) looks not to alter them in any way, and I respect that. And the cast is pretty good(especially Curly).

Hadn't seen this trailer til now. You're right, very Firefly-like spacecraft. This movie looks awesome. It wouldn't surprise me if Ridley Scott pays a little homage to Joss by mentioning the Firefly class of ship in the movie.

2012 so far has some good stuff. Now the fun begins.......well it just begun with Cabin in the Woods, with special mention for John Carter (this is not as bad as Disney would have you believe). When it comes time for my "Best Of" post, the list will be really long. Folks start gathering your notes (Aug, near the end of the summer season) we're gonna have some fun.

Well, now, that does look promising. Maybe now we'll find out, at last, what the Space Jockey is/was.

The way they wrote it in the Dark Horse comic and novels (Aliens vs. Predator, still a cool concept if ever there was one although they'd have done better sticking to the original story IMO) was that these guys were collecting specimens, and that's why there were all those eggs Kane found on the ship.

We shall see. Certainly I will; I think this is a movie worth seeing - it definitely has potential.

Hey Haken run. Don't walk to the theatre. Excellent great story. Solid acting. Beautifully filmed (saw it in 3d). New heroine. Elizabeth Shaw - Noomi Rapace (the original girl with the dragon tattoo). Chapter 1 was really good opening. Yes the Prometheus does look similar to our Serenity. But different. Just to be sure. I stopped all bodily functions because I didn't want to miss a single frame. Plus it was funny.

DREAMTROVE

Prometheus.

Where do I start?

Okay. It was bad. I'm not sure how bad. Maybe IMDb I would have to go with, objectively a 5.6, but I might vote lower because of my intense disappointment.

What I didn't like:

If you're going to spend that much on special effects, at least wait for there to be a decent story underneath. The writing here is just blatantly bad. Not Star Wars Ep. 3 bad or Indiana Jones Crystal Skull bad, but bad. Characters are in no way consistent with their own behavior, the story doesn't fulfill any of its promised to the audience, and there are no twists at all.

minor character inconstancies, but this story abounded with this stuff to the point that there weren't really characters outside of the main ripleyoid

Select to view spoiler:

Panicky guys, see a dead human body and they run like sissies. Okay, that's believable, someone might do that, even tough guys. Then they meet an alien and start playing with it like a pet. That's not remotely the same guys who just ran from the body.

Ice queen is the super in command robot-like mystery of a…ooh black guy! how quick can I get my panties off for him!

More major story problems

Select to view spoiler:

I'm an ancient alien, last of my kind, things went terribly wrong, and we want to kill humanity and start over. Except there's just me and now I'm just going to give my life destroying humanity even though there's no more of my race, and oh wait, there are other humans, and I'm a super intellect of the universe, I must share, no, wait, Hulk Kill! I can crush puny humans. Me dumb. I kill self now. Every die.

I'm a trillionaire old dude. You think I'm a naive bat, and I'm just going to wander out onto this planet and die. Yup, that's what I'm going to do. You know, I know that it's not storytelling, because there would be no point to telling a story thread where nothing unexpected happens because your imagination could just fill in the whole story element with just a casual mention of its existence if nothing was going to happen, just like we didn't tell you the tale of the creation of this starship because it just came down to "some trillionaire hired a bunch of guys and they built a spaceship, there wasn't really a story there." Well, now I'm stowing away on your ship passing secret messages and y'all think I'm dead, but I actually have nothing up my sleeve. There wasn't really a story there either.

Just plain stupid stuff

Select to view spoiler:

It's a giant donut rolling on edge. A rabbit could figure out that he has to run sideways. What is the IQ of a rabbit. We're scientists here. We dumb. Maybe if we don't get squashed by this donut someday we can have our own empire so we can meet the peons and then just oh fuck it, Hulk smash stuff!

He's contaminated, and you're not letting him back on the ship? Why that's so evil, it's like exactly what Ripley does in the beginning of the first alien movie which you made yourself mr. scott. I don't know how you mixed up your heroes and villains, maybe you never read the screenplay, IDK.

Scientists throughout the movie say some really dumb things like god doesn't build straight lines. Actually, the science is as bad as any hollywood movie, the only problem in that for prometheus is that it's so dependent on its science.

This time I agree more with Dreamtrove than I do ShinyGoodGuy. No one is more disappointed about this than I am. I consider Scott's Blade Runner to be one of the best SF films ever made, and while Alien is more of a horror film in SF clothing, it is still the best film in the franchise so far.

Good thing I only paid matinee price, and for the 2D showing at that. I'm also glad I stayed as spoiler free about it as possible, or else I might have been even more disappointed.

I tend to read a lot of spoilers, so it's pretty rare for me to go into a movie with very little idea of what to expect. Before seeing Prometheus, however, I did check the overall movie ratings and saw that they were kinda low. Point is this: I went in with low expectations.

The first half was promising enough. Nothing amazing. Nothing we haven't seen before in some form or another (well, okay, some interesting visuals), but all in all pretty solid. Maybe a few inconsistencies, but nothing to destroy my enjoyment of the flick.

As we reached the second half, though, the silliness started to escalate, particularly around poor characters decisions, inconsistent characterization, seemingly random and pointless actions, and events and decisions that seem to exist only to achieve a particular effect. At this point, though, I thought it was still somewhat enjoyable, although given the amount of talent and money this movie had access to, there was no excuse for the ham-handed writing.

Then we get to the third act (the last quarter of the movie). I remember seeing "Sphere" many years ago and saying that it wasn't that bad until you got to the ending, and which point the ending did more than fall apart: it shredded. I might take that one step further here, to say that the story vaporizes in the third act--which is not to say that there aren't still some interesting ideas and amazing visuals, just that the cohesion and pacing is virtually nonexistent after a certain point.

So, in the end, for me, a huge disappointment, although it's probably not the worst movie I've seen this year. There are a lot of great movies out there, but also a lot of flicks of the other kind, too.

Yeah, I'm not that interested in the Aliens franchise in general, but Prometheus kinda looked bad from the beginning. I've had to listen to one of my friends who is into the franchise and his repeated disappointment over both the more recent movies and the video games, made me think that they've pretty much tapped out the potential of the storylines. And when you can have a trailer for an Alien movie and not even SEE any xenomorphs, something is probably wrong. I'd completely forgotten it was supposed to be an Alien movie until my brother was talking about it and reminded me a few days ago.

Theron, Fassbender, Elba are proven, talented actors in my mind. Did they (in particular) do a bad job or was the writing/plot just that bad? (all i've read points to this)

The acting and visuals were wonderful, but the further along in the story, the harder it was to suspend my disbelief in the writing.

You can believe Jayne standing on his bad leg with a great big hole punched straight through and fighting Reavers that speared and reeled him in to be skinned and filleted. But you might not believe that Elizabeth in Prometheus can run and leap over the pit-of-doom only minutes after

Although I don't disagree with most in that review, I think Two pretty much sums it up. The movie is often very pretty, and has many good and interesting ideas. Some of the cast turn in good performances (I wasn't overly impressed by Rapace, and many of the bit players seem to simply be doing characters from earlier in the Alien franchise, but Elba, Fassbender, and Theron are all strong--although Theron now risks pidgeonholing herself as the "ice queen").

Unfortunately, all of this cannot save a weak script.

Normally, I'm inclined to give the writer a free pass, but there's no denying that the main problem here is the script. Whether that's the fault of Lindelof or Scott (who may not have written the script, but I'm sure he had quite a bit of influence over the story) is unknown--and perhaps unknowable--but that doesn't really do either of them any favors.

I'm a professional writer and editor. Trust me. I know that it all hinges on the script. And that is largely lacking here.

However, while it may be a bad movie, it is not a bad movie without some merit. (Even the script, while extremely flawed in execution, has some good ideas/elements in theory.) I was trying to be polite (and, to some extent, respond to the comments/questions of some others) by leading with the good parts first.

The Prometheus script is like a jigsaw puzzle where all the pieces have the same shape and, in a random pattern, some are upside-down. They fit, but ruin the design. The writer should have fixed it. For example:

Select to view spoiler:

Original story was: Infected Charlie impregnates Elizabeth with squid-baby. Meredith Vickers kills mutating Charlie with flame thrower. Elizabeth operates on herself to remove squid-baby. Then Elizabeth does amazing athletic feats that nobody after surgery could do.

Rearranging the jigsaw puzzle pieces: Elizabeth refuses lovemaking with Charlie because she is a good Christian girl who always wears her cross. Instead, Charlie goes to bad girl Vickers and impregnates her with squid-baby. (The Vickers/Captain Janek hookup doesn't mean anything. Why is it even in the movie?) Then Elizabeth operates on Vickers to remove the parasite, which means Elizabeth knows Charlie was cheating with Vickers. When Charlie begins mutating, Elizabeth (who is still furious at Charlie) kills him with the flame-thrower. Everybody knows about the love triangle and are horrified at what Elizabeth did to Charlie in anger. It makes more sense than Vickers killing Charlie to decontaminate him.

(Since Elizabeth is the Sigourney Weaver character in Prometheus and Weaver was the flame-thrower in the original Alien/Aliens, it should be Elizabeth who is the flame-thrower. It feels right.)

Now it makes sense when Elizabeth does her running and leaping. She won't burst open from recent surgery. And while Vickers is recovering from surgery, she is left with squid-baby in the shuttle with the sickbay. When the shuttle crashes, squid-baby breaks out of its isolation and eats Vickers. It's more horrifying than her being killed by a falling croissant spaceship. It also explains how squid-baby got big enough to kill the Alien Engineer.

The alternative that Prometheus went with is a white girl who sleeps with a black man is horribly crushed by the wheel of karma. "No! No!" she screams. That is straight forward racism and miscegenation. Which is better?

I think the God punishes sinners message is great for horror movies. It makes the audience anxious. For one, the Elizabeth v. Engineer fight is over too quickly.

Select to view spoiler:

What if he had stalked Elizabeth through the shuttle for a minute? The Engineer is carrying David's head to translate: "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil women." Get Samuel Jackson to voice the Engineer. Pure pulp fiction.

And Elizabeth can do nothing but scream when the Engineer picks her up by the scruff of her neck like she is a kitten. He is indifferent to her pain. That could have been really creepy to watch her go face to face with a God who knows (because robot David gossiped) she is a sinner for killing her cheating boyfriend under the guise of "decontamination" of the ship.

And then Elizabeth releases squid-baby to kill the Engineer. Same ending as before, except Elizabeth thinks she knows why the Engineers intended to kill humanity.

No it doesn't. It's overdone. Like when the girl is in the backseat of her car with her boyfriend, and they're getting around third base, and the monster shows up and chainsaws them. Oh, they had sex, guess they're inevitably going to die now.

Actually, no, this is worse, because at least in that case they're getting killed because they were allowing themselves to be distracted in a dangerous situation. But this is like random boomerang karma nonsense with ethical judgement madonna whore complex stuff. This is basically killing someone in a story for no reason other than the dictates of a vengeful god. It doesn't hold up under close scrutiny, and the message, as said, carries unfortunate implications.

Here is a hypothetical dialogue between not-so-good Elizabeth and

the Godlike Engineer. I know Vickers actually killed Elizabeth's boyfriend with a flame-thrower in the movie, but it becomes much more meaningful if Elizabeth does it.

I'll give away the Engineer's thoughts about humans as he stalks Elizabeth through the shuttle. In the movie the Engineer followed her to the shuttle, but he never spoke. Robot David translates the Engineers words, so I keep it short and simple:

"I created you in my own image. I know your progress."

The Engineer is being kind. Elizabeth understands why the Engineer is on cave paintings.

"I know you can be great. But then . . . There was no hurry. I did not have to make my final decision until you arrived at the stars and woke me. I waited with great hope."

The Engineer has Elizabeth in hand. He has taken away her ax that she was carrying in the movie. She can not escape Judgment Day.

"Elizabeth. You were the deciding factor. I would have welcomed you. But you are not worthy."

The Engineer puts on his angry God Face. Elizabeth condemned the whole human race to death because of her jealous murder of her boyfriend.

Then Elizabeth kills God in the same fashion as in the actual movie.

I guess that could be interesting, though I don't really see any reason why the Engineer has to be portrayed as benevolent and given benevolent justifications when his actions obviously aren't. Just creates more logic problems.

Engineer is pretty much evil, or has a sense of morality we don't understand that still basically means evil.

I guess that considering the themes of the movie that some of the Christian themes you want to bring in make sense, but I still think there's some issues with this. There's plenty of storytelling trope reasons for the death you want without having to bring in some kind of slut shaming.

The Engineer is like a human engineer -- he looks at his design, he sees our defects, and is ready to throw humanity into the trashcan. We are a product of his ingenuity. Obviously, Elizabeth does not agree with that Godlike viewpoint so she throws God into the trashcan. God isn't disposed of so easily and crawls out of the trash and comes back as monsters to haunt the 4 Alien movies.

My dad hated it, my cousin loved it, I thought it was okay. Byte, I didn't see that "you're evil because you rutted" message in there at all, I don't know where you're getting that at all. It doesn't seem like Dr. Shaw's relationship with Dr. Hollaway is all that important. The only person who asks Elizabeth about sex is the android, and I don't think he really cares who she is with. I got the impression that she and Dr. Hollaway are either married or very committed anyways, so this seems like a non issue for the plot of the film to me.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

Is Prometheus an attempt by Sir Ridley Scott Knight of the British Empire to rid himself of the demon of his own father...a Royal military ENGINEER owned as a Blade Runner slave by the German god-queen of England (titular pope-head of the Anglican Church of England whose Archbishop of Canterbury is also a pagan Druidic preist in charge of child sacrifice), whose Nazi god-king of England wants to genocide 95% of the human race and owns Monsanto that's already killing every plant and animal specias on Earth via genetically modified organisms? A mass-murdering Nazi alien god in charge of bioweapons laboratories whom Sir Scott grovels on his knees to with a VERY LARGE KNIFE to his throat, literally? Sounds like the Engineer is Lucifer, not God. Ridley Scott does worship Lucifer, as all Freemasons are required to do. Who else would have an alien born by immaculate conception, like Alien Jesus, while promoting the benefits of aborticide that's murdered over 100-million Amerikans, so far? Freesons and other Satanists (including Mormons) believe Lucifer is brother of Jesus, that Lucifer is their god, and Jesus is the devil.

Quote:

"Scott was born in the coastal town of South Shields,[3] England, the son of Elizabeth and Colonel Francis Percy Scott.[4] He was raised in an Army family, meaning that for most of his early life, his father — an officer in the Royal Engineers — was absent. Scott received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in honor of his substantial contribution to the British film industry. He received his honor at London's Buckingham Palace on 8 July 2003. Scott admitted feeling "stunned and truly humbled" after the ceremony, saying, "As a boy growing up in South Shields (north-east England), I could never have imagined that I would receive such a special recognition."

"LUCIFER, the Light-bearer! Strange and mysterious name to give to the Spirit of Darkness! Lucifer, the Son of the Morning! Is it he who bears the Light, and with its splendors intolerable blinds feeble, sensual, or selfish Souls? Doubt it not!"
-General Albert Pike, kosher pope of Freemasonry, from his Masonic bible Morals and Dogma of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, page 321

"I do despair. That's a heavy word, but picking up a newspaper every day, how can you not despair at what's happening in the world, and how we're represented as human beings? The disappointments and corruption are dismaying at every level. And the biggest source of evil is of course religion. Everyone is tearing each other apart in the name of their personal god. And the irony is, by definition, they're probably worshiping the same god. I've got something else in the works. I'm already doing it. It's called Moses. Seriously, seriously. It's going to happen. I probably shouldn't have let that slip out. I'm not supposed to say anything [or I'll get smote by a bolt oflightning]."

So the Prometheus release date coincides with Selection 2012, where Willard Mitt Romney's official Mormon religion that oversexed spaceman from planet Kolob impregnated planet Earth to found the human race...

So who is more insane, Ridley Scott, Mittens Romney, GOP voters, or Alien fans who fund this chaos (rather than wait for the Dollar Movie or free on TV)?

Or is Ridley Scott like John Travolta, Will Smith and Tom Cruise -- a member of the cult Church of Scifitology from planet Xenu?

Or is Ridley Scott just another psychopath who loves making slasher movies, while hobnobbing with real serial killers and mass murderers?

Why can't Hollywood FOR ONCE rent a Vomit Comet OR AMUSEMENT PARK CARNIVAL RIDE, and install a spaceship set, with actor astronots ACTUALLY flying blindly around a weightless spaceship, or flung violently aroudn the cabin when not strapped wown during high-G maneuvers? And why does ANYBODY suspend disbelief that humans can fly in space without protection from DEADLY COSMIC RADIATION? Even NASA admits that all moons have NUCELAR BOMBS EXPLODING CONTINUOUSLY UNDER THE ASTRONOTS' FEET. Oh that's right, SATAN told them so...

Quote:

The original ALIEN was SATAN in Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan

"And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon. This is the great dragon of chapter 12, Satan or Azazel. He has a number of names, but in each case, he is the king of all the demons, Lucifer, who became Satan."
-Revelation 9:11, Christian Bible, KJV with Forerunner Commentary

"The Moon is a bright gamma-ray source. The Moon is brighter than the Sun in gamma rays. The Moon is exposed to cosmic rays and solar flares. When cosmic rays hit the ground, they produce a dangerous spray of secondary particles right at your feet, and trigger little nuclear reactions that release more radiation in the form of neutrons. The lunar surface itself is radioactive!"
-Dr Robert Naeye PhD, NASA GLAST Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope, "Solar System: Sun, Moon, and Earth", 23 Aug 2007

"No manned spacecraft now exists that can withstand the radiation from the Van Allen belts, through which a craft must traverse to make it to the Moon."
-SpaceCast News Service, March 9, 1998
http://spacedaily.com/news/lunar-98h.html

"One giant blunder for mankind: how NASA lost moon pictures. Originally stored at Goddard, the tapes were moved in 1970 to the US National Archives. No one knows why, but in 1984 about 700 boxes of space flight tapes there were returned to Goddard. 'We have the documents to say they were withdrawn, but no one knows exactly where they went,' SAID John Sarkissian, a CSIRO scientist stationed at Parkes radi otelescope. Many people involved had retired or died. Also among tapes feared missing are the original recordings of the other five Apollo moon landings."

Quote:

“Not the seminal science fiction film one wants from Ridley Scott…the sets and special effects are well done, but these things no longer surprise or tantalize us as they once did.” – The New York Times

“There is very little involvement with the characters themselves…a generally good cast in cardboard roles.” – Variety

“An overblown B-movie…technically impressive but awfully portentous and as difficult to sit through as a Black Mass sung in Latin.” – Los Angeles Herald Examiner

“An empty bag of tricks whose production values and expensive trickers cannot disguise imaginative poverty.” – Time Out

Prometheus reviews? Guess again. All four are actually clipped from contemporary reviews of Scott's 1979 film Alien, which few people would dare to argue these days is anything other than a classic of its genre.

Soon movie theatres will serve beer with toilets built into the seats.

Alternate ending: Alien conquers all spacemen and military on planet Earth, killed by hit-and-run soccer mom while texting.
