I have a confirmed interview with Greg Edmonson, the composer, this weekend. Are there any questions you want to see asked in this interview? I can't promise I will ask all of them, but I will pick a few good ones and credit FFF.net browncoats with helping with this effort.

I'd like to ask if the proposed score CD will have "cue" style tracks or more composited/arranged pieces... personally, I'd rather have several nice suites of Firefly music, arranged by theme, character or by episode. I find that score CDs with 30 or 40 cue tracks are not nearly as cohesive to listen to... there are those purists who like THAT specific piece of music from THIS particular moment in an episode, but I'm not one of them...

I'd also like to know if there will be any extended versions of certain themes or tunes... I'd love to hear an extended version of the theme song, for instance...

"Just remember... all success is illusion: what has really been accomplished is the displacement of an area of specific failure to somewhere else... or is it the other way around?"

I basically just want to know if a CD is in the works, and when we can expect a release date. I know this is an obvious question that you probably have plans to cover, but you DID ask.

The second Gladiator soundtrack was compiled primarily from alternative versions of Zimmer's works for Gladiator, unused music, and "initial" versions of the music that finally appeared in the movie, combined with voice tracks from the film. It was like listening to the audio version of an artist's sketch book.

If Greg has alternative versions, would they be worth publishing?

Did he create the music by viewing the episodes, or did he have some music in mind already before filming began?

Was there one central music theme that he kept in mind while composing?

How does he ultimately feel about the music he created? Is he still happy with it, or are there some points he would have done differently?

Yes. If he's going to be doing the music for the FIREFLY movie, could he put some stuff in that really rocks the house? Guitar riffs, stuff that'll really get the blood pumping especially when the action starts getting good. What about some remakes of classic rock? (Seger, Petty, Springsteen, SRV, etc, etc.)

Not to diss classic rock or anything, but since they've never incorporated it into the theme of the show, you don't think it would seem out of place in the movie? They've gone more toward the Country/Bluegrass venue than classic rock.

Even if he does incorporate the style, Edmonson is a composer, that means doing his own thing, not remaking other artists' work. The licensing nightmares would be many and harsh.

BTW, all those questions I listed? They're merely suggestions. If they don't get asked, I won't be sending hate posting asking how come.

Are there musical signatures for different characters or events?

Were there any unusual instruments used? Any banjos or jugs, or were the sounds synthesized?

Did he also write the source music? i.e. the "Shindig", "Safe", and "Our Mrs. Reynolds" dance peices? I'd love to get those on a cd as well.

Thanks guys for the great questions. I'll try to cover as many as I can. It is nice to know what fans want to read in an interview.

My first question would be if he's been approached about doing the film. I'm assuming so, since Joss talked about wanting his old crew back, but it seems only having the original cast is "non-negotiable." Also, just how close is the score CD to happening? And it wouldn't be a 2 or 3 CD set, would it? ;)
Also, I'm interested in his process for recording the music. Is it similar to what Christophe Beck did on Buffy? And please tell him to stick to the formula from the TV show for the movie, because I thought the mix he used of western (film sense) and eastern music along with modern score style worked perfectly.

Hey, just wondering how did the interview go, if it did indeed happen? (crossing fingers...) Don't mean to rush you in writing it up or anything, just wanted to be reassured that the interview did happen.

Much thanks!

Yep, happened last Sunday. It was great! I got scoops upon scoops, both about the music and the show. In fact, there is so much about Firefly, the show, that I wonder if a traditional film music site/publication would be interested. It may be better suited for a Firefly site, such as FFF. I dunno yet. Anyway, will finish up this week, I hope, and I'll see where I can place it.

I'm a fan of the show. SO-O-O glad it's back, and that SERENITY will be opening soon. Hope the series goes on after the movie. Bring back all the Firefly characters for it.

By the way... I'm looking to find a copy of the Firefly theme, scored for piano. Need it for UFO conference in Hollywood, first weekend in September. Any ideas? Please help if you can. Will gladly pay for music.

I know that the dance music in Shindig is a classical piece, unfortunatley I do not know by whom it was written or what its called (hence what I am trying to figure out)

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

According to an interview that Greg Edmonson gave for the Signal http://signal.serenityfirefly.com/signal.php #7, the music @the Shindig is indeed classical, the dance in Safe is traditional, arranged by Greg, & the Ballad of Jayne was written by Ben Edlund (who wrote the episode). I think Greg did compose the dance music in Our Mrs Reynolds.
