There's so many things out there now to try and bring back dead series, and very few of them work. Petitions, fan communities, etc, have not been successful in recent cancellations. But we've seen in the last few weeks TWO instances of DVD sales actually bringing shows back. Family Guy is being brought back into production, and J. Michael Straczinsky is currently writing a spinoff to Babylon 5.

With the Firefly DVDs released, we now have that recourse as well. But 'em for yourselves, now instead of later, and buy them for your friends and family - Christmas is almost here ! Firefly has at LEAST as strong a fan community as Family Guy, and now's our chance to prove it !

Well, I'm up to five copies so far. Usually I give a couple albums or a book I really liked that year as an add-on to whatever (or the gift itself, $$ depending) but this year I'm using the Firefly dvd set.

I was encouraged to note that on Amazon it's number 20, which means Firefly is outselling the Indiana Jones set that's gotten a lot more hype.

What kinda sucks is that it's linked to all the Whedon stuff - don't get me wrong, I loved Buffy (not so much most of Angel) but I don't think the Buffy fan is the best tie in for Firefly.

I'd like to see it linked with action films and sci fi series.

Nothing gets the interests of networks like seeing money flow in. I will never understand why scifi gets sold short, there is such a yearning for well written scifi, Firefly was the most tivoed show at the time. I tried watching Enterprise but I just can't it is getting tired to me, Firefly is such breath of fresh air, I remeber a cartoon when I was younger about space rangers it was a scifi western I loved that show too and it was canceled. Well it just goes to show money talks

Ooooh yea - that. I've apparently got a decade or so difference in my frame of reference with Harlock! I think my bro used to watch it, but I missed out. Might have to hunt that up at some point.

I ordered a second copy so I can loan it out (can't bring myself to let my only copy go) in the hopes that some of the folks I clue in might like it enough to buy their own. It's the most I can do, in the hopes it helps.

Yo we all should buy extra copys and send them back to Fox or a network that we would like to get the series. Back when roswell was canned we sent in tabassco sause i know its alot cheaper but i bought one of those giant bottles and shipping coast a bit for that. Ow well its just an idea. FOX bolows but i cant help watch what they got since all the good stuff in on there channel. All the shows that get canned a bet a lot of networks would love to take them over but i think FOX realy needs to give the show a shot. I mean look at some of the crap that areas like andromeda( it was good for the first seans and so but this last 2 i dont know new writers or somthing) and Mutant X what the fuck that show just sucks. OW well sorry just needed to vent just finished watching them on dvd.

do *NOT* send objects of any kind(especially DVD's, we want them to know people buy and WATCH them, not buy and don't watch them!)

Sending objects is very bad anymore, it will only create even more problems and make them even more hostile to fans.

I don't think a Buffy fan is a bad bet at a Firefly fan (being both myself), but I agree that the fanbase could be much broader. What recent, popular action movies would you think it wise to link Firefly to? I'm trying to put some amazon Listmania lists together featuring Firefly, and would love some suggestions. Check out my scifi/fantasy list:

Vote for it, and give some suggestions for an action list. Or put one together yourself with some sci-fi series - I'm not really the best for that task, as I haven't really liked any of the sci-fi series I've watched that much (except, of course, Firefly).

The entire Starblazers series is currently on DVD, including the next few seasons that only aired in Japan. You should be able to find them either at your local Suncoast video, or order them from Amazon.com.

i have purchased 10 copies so far and sent 9 of them to friends (some saw the series some did not) all are now fans. i plan to purchase an additional 10 for gifts. and i hope there is a second initiative to supply our men and women overseas with dvds (i found out too late about the first one).

as far as fox is concerned, i have deleted them from my tv channel list, i do not watch anything from that network any longer - which isn't really all that hard when it is mostly filled with inane, contrived reality shows. if we create another petition i would suggest that we all just simply tell fox we have ceased to watch their network and state our annual incomes. shows are kept or cancelled on the networks perception of a financial demographic. if you love or hate a show does not matter half as much as that you watch a show and make 20K, 50K, 80K, 100K or more per year.

yeah, anime is a perfect example for what you are talking about. one thing you notice as a fan of anime is that so many of the series released here on dvd are actually failed series. something until now was unheard of in the US.

i mean, think of it, a tv series that never even finished its first season getting a home video release? what have you been smoking?, but it has been going on in japan for years, and it actually works. there have been a number of cases where a US home video release (or US tv release) have actually sparked the continuation of a series (or the creation of new series).

though you mentioned family guy. its continuation can be thanked to cartoon network. its success there is really what has caused the talk of new eps, same can be said of futurama (though that is slower going) but its still a good point to be made. imagine if a network picked up firefly and aired the eps in order? CN has saved numerous series that way (DBZ, Sailor moon, big O, family guy, etc). and i know FF can succeed that way, as all of you know.

;) I'm a hardcore Buffyverse fanatic and I am absolutely in love with Firefly.

Anyway, I think DVD sales will help the possibility of ever getting another series, but another factor is how well the movie does. However, I'm not really sure how that will work out...no network picked it up when FOX dropped it, so why would they now? I think the best possibility is to get multiple movies, and I don't much mind that.

Simon: You...you came for us.
Mal: You're on my crew.
Simon: Right. I guess I just didn't...you don't even like me.
Mal: You're on my crew. Why we still talking about this?

Not so sure that it ever will come back, but if it did I think HBO would be a great fit for it.... I gotta believe the movie's gonna have a bit more edge than the original 14 episodes did. Hopefully the first move does well, we get two more and the popularity of the show gets on the uptick and some network picks it (preferably the aforementioned HBO). I think a network like HBO would allow the show to follow more in an movie style....

Ok it seems im a newly converted Brown Coat, who is really pissed off at number crunchin pea brains that wouldnt know a great show if it bit them on the arsesolelemeo..anyhoo it seems the show got the chop,i only saw firefly for the first time early this yr (05) in Australia and thought it was great, only saw it once more then it was gone,i reckon it is far better than Enterprise, voyager, and Andromeda..man that show is like hercules in space, its really quiet silly, hehehe but hey i watch it in hope that it will better, optimistic sci fan that i am. Anyway im really disapointed at the lack of vision that the executive's who cancelled this show have disaplayed,if they had a look at the shit that is being sold of as quality sci fi they would have seen that they where on a winner,i believe something that would have drawn a considerable fan base, but maybe we will never know, the movie may get the show some more attention and dvd sales might help aswell but when it all comes down to it someone with the guts to have a go and believe in it is what it will take.... i would like to quote this little gem from "shindig"

Badger, " thought we might have a bit of a sit down,
capt reynolds, prefer a bit of a piss off

kinda sums up my thoughts of television executives. AAAH venting frustrations its like therapy.

Yeah, I am new myself. Never heard of firefly untill last week.

Have seen nearly every episode so far, will watch the last 4 tonight.

Would buying the DVD set now, so long after the show was cancelled, make any difference?

I think so. All these figures are still being recorded, and will likely be taken into account when the issue of movie sequels and/or another series/minseries/telemovie/shadow puppets comes about.

The Firefly DVD has sold over half a million copies so far ... I wouldn't mind seeing it hit a million (rolling eyes ... dream world) one day.
