Joss Whedon works fast: now that Summer Glau is no longer busy with Terminator, he's already talking to her about showing up on Dollhouse. But she won't be playing the role you might expect. Possible spoilers...

Well I vote for Summer to be a doll. Perhaps with the name of Tango (She loves to dance).

But since Joss is dead set against such a move, then my guess is:

A NSA agent looking for Mr. Dominic. This way she gets to kick ass and be smart. It would be a recurring role of course, and she gets to outsmart Mark Sheppard as the FBI agent.

She could be a genius sent in by Rossum to help Topher "fix" the Dolls when something goes wrong.

She could play an investigative reporter looking to break the story on the Dollhouse for Fox News.

She could be an FBI informant who formerly worked with Ballard and is looking to make more money.

She could also be a secretary/receptionist in the Rossum building.

She could be one of the trainers or masseuse in the Dollhouse.

She could be a bounty hunter tracking Alpha.

Thanks, Haken! You find some cool stuff!!
I would like to see Summer being put into the role of a 'new boss' from the parent company and she's been sent to take control of this 'house' due to the current problems with Alpha. You know it would seem important to get control of Alpha, he could reek havoc on many more houses, she could be a 'better model' than they are currently 'renting out'.

...OR she could be Dr. Spock's back-up band.

While Summer would make an excellent "doll," I think casting her as one would be...well, in a way, redundant. Such a role would be too similar to River, and when does being typecast within the Whedon universe ever get fun?

I like your notion about her being sent by the NSA to come a-lookin' for Dominic. Maybe she's his immediate superior or handler (not sure an agent in Dominic's role would have a handler or not), maybe she's his partner, maybe they had a little something going on the side...and BOY IS SHE PISSED.

Quoting Liz Lemon from 30 Rock- I want to go there.

I really want her interacting with Topher on some awesomely nerdly plane. I think Joss could come up with a character for her that would jive really well with Topher. Plus I think Topher needs someone to be a touch more buddy buddy with. Maybehaps Ivy quits as she has been resigned to juice box gofer and they replace her with Summer's character? Dunno, something with Topher would be cool. But jmo.

I said this in the other Summer/Dollhouse thread but I thought it would be funny if Summer played the person Topher's diagnostic personality that was uploaded into Sierra was based on. Like it was someone he once knew or a girlfriend he once had but lost, so now he brings her back once a year. Creepy? Yes. Interesting? Possibly. Mainly I would just like to see Summer play a fun role like that opposite Topher.

I always thought Glau would be the perfect Wonder Woman in a universe where Whedon was still in charge of making that movie.

Good news about her coming to Dollhouse. Very happy it got renewed. As long as Whedon keeps his "family" of actors close, a Firefly spin off is never too far out of the question.

RIVERDANCER

I'm with Joss on this one. Of course Summer is gorgeous beyond the pale, and she has amazing range as an actress, hence would make a very good active, but we've seen her do the 'helpless little girl gone badass' thing. And, let's be honest, she would totally overshadow miss Dushku if she were to play a similar role. Can't have that, as the politics of the network are already... well, it's Fox. They wanted to give Eliza a show. Was she the best choice to play a wide range of personas? No, I don't think she was, I think Summer would be, but it is what it is.
Anyway, I would love to see Summer play a more villainous role. Something where she got to be a little evil. Feared but not trusted by anyone. Her being so lithe and yet so very capable of kicking ass makes for a good dynamic where everyone's kind of intimidated by this little girl, and newcomers can't understand why until they see her in action.
You know what I think would be cool? If she was one of the big shots at Rossum. Smart, steely, and doing everything in her considerable power to get this house back in line; hunt down Alpha, keep an eye on the FBI agent who wants to take them but is now at least partly in their grasp, investigate the whole house. Something like that. I wouldn't mind seeing her play an agent of some kind either, but the FBI and NSA of this show seem to get the short end of the stick a lot. It would be much more interesting to me if she was a Big Bad that needed to be defeated.

I pretty much agree on that, but Ms. Dushku does a better job than I expected...rightly or wrongly I'd always thought of her as kind of one-note.

Although I agree with Riverdancer - Summer would have been better suited for the Doll role - it would have been more of the same (River, Terminator little albatross kicks ass) and would definitely overshadow the star of the show.

But...................

She DID surprise me a bit in many of the eps. My favs were at the beginning when she was "bonding" with Boyd. I think next season we're gonna see much more of that dynamic (I hope).

Indeed. I think Summer will be a huge (yet petite) asset to the show...just like to see her maybe not cast in the kind of role that suggests itself to most peeps, myself included: Formerly Victimized and Disabled Waif Turned Avenging Angel.

ETA: Though I suppose you really can't stop Summer from being angelic, and if her character wants to slip in a little vengeance here and there, I guess I can live with it.

I liked that idea too,dmaanlileiltt.

I think it would be a sweet and dark touch of irony, considering the whole anti-secret-mind-control-making-people-better message of the show.

I saw an internet fan promo for Dollhouse before ever hearing of the show (no tv) and thought...this is soooo one-offing River, plus the big-bad "them" concept...then DUH, it's Joss.
You can see a little nucleus of an idea expanded in his shows from a previous one. He really seems to like exploring CONCEPTS, and using plot/characters to get there.

Which is probably why all the main reviewers say the large majority of his fans are rather eccentric and non-mainstream. Whatever. :D

OK. Four times now, Joss Whedon has cast a Firefly actor on one of his other shows. Without fail, he has cast them as major villains:

Nathan Fillion played Caleb on Buffy
Gina Torres played Jasmine on Angel
Adam Baldwin played Marcus Hamilton on Angel
Alan Tudyk played Alpha on Dollhouse

Here's one idea: Summer Glau plays a handler from another Dollhouse who has gone rogue and taken her Doll with her. She may even forge an alliance with Alpha.

But... FOR THE LOVE OF EXPLOSIVES!

1. I will be happy to see Summer on the show, regardless of what she's doing.
2. But since we can discuss our wants, I want her to be someone evil. I want to see a dark side to her. Nothing weird or crazy, just something new we haven't seen.

I thought Harry lennix, A.K.A Boyd Langton, was working well with Echo, but the promoted him. I was a little peaved by that. Maybe, after they resolve the current issue, he will end as her handler again. That would be fine with me. But Summer could work with Echo for a while. I don't think Joss intends Summer to become a main character. My impression is Joss wants her for just a few episodes. Who knows. Joss is always pulling things out of that hat of his.

I can't get enough of Epitaph One. So I'm thinking Summer could be one of the people that hasn't been imprinted. She could come along with Felicia Day's group to find the haven thing.

But if Joss decides to not go the apocalyptic future route, I would like to see Summer play a Rossum bigwig and interferes with Adelle's dollhouse.

But whatever Summer plays would be fine by me. im sure Joss will all shock us with what Summer's character will be.

BTW, Tahmoh Penikett (Paul Ballard) will be Echo's new handler right? Summer being a handler would be highly unlikely IMO.

I'd like to see a 'normal' Summer, for a change; no traumatized seventeen-year-old, no Doll reprogrammed by the Resistance to save John Conner; just, you know, something normal. 'Normal' is actually a lot harder to act than weird or evil -- which is all the more reason why they should give such a role to our beloved Glau.

I'd like to see her in a normal person character but it's Dollhouse. You can't fit in "normal" anywhere there.

I guess we're all banking on the idea that she'll be a mainstay or have a multi episode arc at least.

I have to give the site http://www.summer-glau.net/wp/ credit for this one, but here's some news on who Summer will play.

from the article at http://io9.com/5362048/summer-glau-and-ray-wise-live-in-joss-whedons-b
izarro-dollhouse?skyline=true&s=i

"n today's conference call with reporters, Whedon explained exactly what Wise (the devil from the show Reaper) and Glau would be doing when they appear in the season's sixth episode. Wise is the head of another Dollhouse — sort of a counterpart to Adelle DeWitt, with whom he'll be butting heads. And Glau is the other Dollhouse's programmer — so she's the counterpart to Topher. And Glau's part is "eccentric" and totally different from anything you've seen before. The writers worked extra hard to make her character "pop" because they knew what Glau was capable of, said Whedon. And yes, this new Dollhouse will be much cooler than "our" Dollhouse, thanks to Wise and Glau."

I can't wait to see Summer and Fran (Topher) on screen together. Should be awesome.
