This is the content of my recent blog at livejournal http://pumaman-redux.livejournal.com/

____ Suffice it to say my Turkey Day 2006 was above average ...

I made my usual T-Day pilgrimmage to my fathers on the wednesday before, ate there and then left Friday at around 1pm to make it to work for part of Black Friday (was scheduled for 5pm) ....

I made a stop at Curcuit City on Wednesday because they were selling Firefly: The Complete Series for $19.99. I picked up 2 copies with the intent to finally donate them so patrons of two libraries in my area could see the show. I went to FYE on Friday and got a copy of the special edition of Airplane! and a copy of Serenity.

Saturday morning I went to my local library and left one copy of Firefly and the copy of Serenity with the person on duty who was a high schooler who was very surprised at my action and asked if I had seen the movie while the whole concept of my dropping off the dvds hit. He told me he would be borrowing the discs (once they get put into curculation). I still have that second copy of Firefly .. may a) Donate it to the same library b) Donate it to another library or c) do something else

... then I went to w*** for the day

... I then got home and started to watch a syndicated ep of CSI: Miami and it had Sean Maher of Firefly/ Serenity fame as a suspect in an episode entitled Spring Break [season 1, episode 21, according to imdb.com] ___________

Good to hear your library donation experience turned out well.

My experience did not go so well. While visiting family over the winter break, I donated a copy of Firefly to the local library. I figured if I could not be around to spread the word, the least I could do was leave a copy of Firefly behind for others to enjoy. The next time I was back in town, I stopped by the library to see how well things were working out. I couldn't find the DVDs on the shelf or in the card catalog. I asked a librarian what happened to them. Turns out the library sold the box set instead of putting it into circulation.

The down side is that the DVDs aren't being enjoyed by as many people as I would have liked. But the bright side is, there is at least one more Browncoat out there. So if you're planning to donate Firefly or Serenity to a library and want it put into circulation, check with the librarians first to find out the process for adding new DVDs to the circulation material.

lol, wank. I almost didna get it. Um, anyway, yeah, sometimes (at least at my school) you can request for books or movies that you'd like to see on the shelves. I tried to get America the Book a couple of years ago, and they got it. We've actually already gotten Serenity so now the Firefly campaign starts.

To anyone who's read this thread and thought against donating a set to their library:

Check with the Head Librarian first. Build a Browncoaty Relationship with him/her.

I went to my local library a year ago and asked how donations work. We started chatting, and she really liked the idea of donating the set to the library. I bought it, gave it to her, and now my Firefly box set is one of the most checked out sets.
After talking with other librarians in the area, SHE called ME and asked if I had any more to donate - other libraries wanted it, too. So far, I've donated 7 sets to libraries. I've also donated 3 copies of Serenity.

In Maryland, you fill out a donation form and turn it in with the box set.
I get a tax write-off, and recruit at the same time.

Definitely check with the library administration what happens to donations before giving them a set of firefly DVD's. Many public library systems do not even offer movies or entertainment material to patrons, restricting their collections to educational documentaries. I work for a just such a library system and any DVD sets donated to us would be given to the "Friends of the Library" to be sold at book sales. Now, these "Friends" organizations do great work in helping the local public library bring more services to the community, so any donations will be well worth the effort, but don't assume that what you donate will immediately be put into circulation and made available to others. This is a great idea if your library does carry entertainment materials though!

Grrr... I've been watching CSI: Miami every night for the past month waiting for that episode, and I don't even like the show!!! They play 3 episodes back to back every night and I still haven't seen it, I even watched a 16 episode marathon one time hoping it would be on!!! Oh and kudos on the library thing, it's a good idea I'll see if I can try and spread the word a similar way, maybe buy copies for my friends or something.

A&E is the channel I watch it on. It's on 2-3 times an evening so I watch the beginning of each one to try and figure out which episode it is, then I miss the beginning of other shows and I can't watch anything else for a good half-hour. It seems I've seen every episode but Spring Break. Someday...

You could always rent the disc that the episode is on of CSI: Miami (season 1, episode 21) from Blockbuster/ other video renting retailer

Its either disc 6 or 7 ... no I don't have it but I'm making a guess since the set has 7 discs ... could be disc 5 or 6, if the last disc is special features ... no clue

And after you rushed and gave me roses in the other thread...

Folks, donating the box set / movie is an awesome way to recruit. You just HAVE to make sure your donation won't be sold - that it will be put into circulation at your local branch. The ONLY way to do this is to ask.

The Houston Browncoats about a year ago donated 5 Firefly DVD sets to the local Fort Bend County Libraries. We attempted to contact two local counties libraries to find one that was both willing to accept them and put them on the shelf. Fort Bend County responded with eagerness, so we gathered dvd sets and I marched them in to the main library for Fort Bend County, and let me tell you, when you walk in with a donation like that it gets ALL the librarians attention, I had 5 librarians stop me and ask what I was carrying and ask me about the show, everyone else within ear shot leaned in to catch what I said, as did all the patrons in the area.

Every so often we check the online catalog to see where the dvd's are and what the waiting list is like. well 4 were checked out and one in transit right now, up until recently there was a long line of holds waiting for it to get back on the shelf. :)

I strongly support folks donating to their libraries but, do your research first, make sure the library will put it into circulation, and make sure they do not already have a ton of Firefly on the shelf!

I recently bought three copies of the BDM as it was on sale... the intention was to donate them to my local library. Dutifully I checked the online catalogue and... they have 25 copies of Serenity already and two of Firefly as well as the soundtracks!!

Right - suggestions please for what is the best way to spread the word with three spare copies of Serenity? ( I already have two lending copies!)

*bump*

The topic of donating DVDs cropped up recently in a new person's thread at

http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=20&t=28280

so I decided to bump this thread and mention that these threads inspired me to write a message about donating Surface TV show dvds over at

http://www.savesurface.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2505

So it doesn't just have to be Firefly and/ or Serenity DVDs ... it could be that copy of Gigli you got for Xmas a few years back

*Begin PSA announcement*

so if you like a TV series or movie and have a few spare $$$ or other currency then donate copies to a venue like a (town, city, college, et al) library, an Armed Forces organization or a troop, a sci-fi club or whatever group you see fit. Check the rules and regulations with the venue you select so you make there are not any complications.

*end PSA*

Speaking as a librarian, I highly recommend this idea. Don't forget school and academic libraries as well as public ones. Most libraries have a high demand for DVDs and a limited budget to buy them with so donations are usually appreciated. I second checking the library catalog first to make sure that they don't already have Firefly/Serenity and then checking with the head librarian (or media librarian if the staff is big enough) to make sure the donation will be welcome. You will want to get a receipt or some other acknowledgement of your donation if you plan to write it off on your taxes.

In the small rural community I live in not too many folk HAVE DVD players!! I kid you not! Those that do aren't generally the type to frequent the library...(in my opinion). What I've resorted to is 'one browncoat at a time'... A woman who works at my veterinarians' office doesn't even have television...but she and her family do have a DVD player and they are the local blockbusters' best customers.. So last time I was there I loaned her the DVD of Firefly... Next time I saw her she said she and her family were amazed and intrigued and couldn't believe the show had been canceled with so many questions left unanswered and so many stories left untold. I then loaned them the movie Serenity...and when I got it back she was so grateful. Just small steps in a small community. I will check with our library, tho to see if they accept donations. It's a good idea this time of year with kids out for the summer.

However, during these past few weeks I thinned out my DVD collection a little (some titles I doubt I'll watch again or were still in shrink wrap) and purchased some new titles (cheaply at a W**-M***)

There's always Goodwill (hey, you'd be surprised how many people shop there precisely because things are so cheap. This INCLUDES people looking for media - like DVDs - on the cheap, who might not buy it at full price, but might well still fall in love with the series!)

There's also college and high school libraries, too. God knows that I would rather have watched FF or Serenity when we had a sub than the thousandth viewing of Remember the Titans!

Since posting my last post, I have donated a few more cheap movies and the copy of the TV series Surface I donated a while back has been put in circulation ....

Triva at Wal-Mart there are a ton of movies priced at $5 and $7.50 .. sometimes even less. At larger WM stores there are many seasons of TV shows priced at $19.99. Not Firefly tho

Someone out here with greater graphic capability than I create a Nathan book mark with the Netflix url

on it. If they like Nathan, they can watch Firefly for free on Netflix.

Then we can print them out at home, cut them up, and slip them into the Castle novels at the local bookstores/libraries.

I mean, I ran into a Castle fan at the bookstore last week who had never seen Firefly. How many more of them out there are there?
