How much do you reckon it would cost to get an advert in some Sci-Fi mags? Just one of those half-a-page ones? or maybe a leaflet slipped inside?

I doubt it would cost more than we can raise through donations, surely?

That's a good idea, and very Firefly.

When the series was on TV and looking cancellable, the fans took out an ad in Variety, the absolute source for the players in Hollywood.

Doing that again for the anniversary might be a great idea. Or anywhere that Hollywood types will be seeing for days. If not Variety again, maybe Premiere magazine?

(here I had been thinking, "What if we send all the Universal execs Krispy Kremes on 9/30 as a thank you?" when I feel grateful, I always seem to go to donuts first. )

Krispy Kremes are always a good idea, even when there's carts and carts of them, such as was seen here: http://www.penny-arcade.com/2006/03/01 (scroll down to the bottom).

(laughing) I can't believe someone actually did that. I wasn't going to post my idea -- I thought I'd get laughed out of the room.

But honestly, when you bite into a Krispy Kreme, don't you have an experience similar to Kaylee's with the strawberry?

And wouldn't you want those making decisions to associate that feeling with Serenity?

But yes, I know, the Hollywood types live to be streamlined. (sigh)

Hehe, I thought you might like that. Given your Uru banner, I figured you might know of both SOE and Penny Arcade. Funny funny stuff.

I wonder, though, how much more difficult it would be for us to get Krispy Kremes delivered to Universal? Penny Arcade just has that one small office after all, and no security (that I know of)...

All of this sounds good. Someone (I do not remember who) brought up the idea somewhere else to use myspace.com as advertisement. The Marine Corps did the same thing to recrute people http://www.usmc.mil/31stmeu/index.htm talks about it (scroll down for the link). Of cource more numbers the better, but there are so many ideas going on, we just need to get them all on the same page so everyone can do it, in numbers.

Theres been talk about writing to different places and people, thanking them for the movie on the 30 of September. The myspace thing, now sending them some Krispy Kreams with a letter. Its all great, but how can we get everyone from all of the other web sites and everywhere else Browncoats maybe at on the same page to do it all at once? I vote for CK to be our leader, shes always charming enough to do so :P

Hey, Marine, you're right CK is charming and all.. I agree.

But we already have a leader. 11th Hour is a veteran Browncoat who is quite talented as an artist and quite talented as a guerila marketer.

All the ideas are going under one heading. They go in the guerilla marketing forum down right below the general discussion forum box. We've been doing this all summer. I know it doesn't look like it cuz you just got here and it takes time to build sites and alter old ones. But we currently have quite a few things going on.

I'm gonna make a newbies read here thread tomorrow over there. Maybe that will help everyone to see what is going on. Our threads fall off the front page so quick folks don't know what we're doin'.

Yep yep, there's folks far more experienced than I who have been plannin' on this for quite awhile. I'll just throw my weight in where I can -- and vote for donuts, because donuts should always be voted for.

I think a "Hey all new people, here's what's going on" thread for this particular part of the board would help. Still, tangent ideas (donuts! ok, maybe not) are likely to spin off as things pick up speed, so having a "check in here for the official word" thread as well might help too.

Well now...

I feel like an idoit. I asked what 11thHour is and someone told me that it was just a person who was on this web site. I didn't know he/she was the "acting leader" I'm glad this is going in the direction everyone wants it to go to and your subject regarding all of the newbies will be a helpful navagator.

No worries I was only picking with CK because she is always cheerful. Thank you for the websites.

Now another stupid question, what is a guerila marketer. I have an idea, but there is a thread with that same title.

Awww, Marine, you're doin' fine! We like it when folks ask questions!

First off you didn't even get greeted right, and that's my fault. I'm supposed to be the sorta/official greeter. So see.. you've been at a disadvantage all this time cuz you don't have your browncoat.

I usually give folks browncoats ( yeah, you can't see 'em, but they're there!) and say howdy and give folks a little direction and I just sorta messed up on you. I also meant to answer your post on the other thread where you asked who 11th Hour was, but got called to come help my daughter in the kitchen, she was lifting heavy pans. So... let's get this straightened out.

Welcome home, Marine. I think you will love it here. I do. This is like my home away from home. Here you will find lots of folk of like mind and who love the 'verse as much as you do, and understand that very real feeling of loss.

Since you're new, you need your gear...

*hands Marine a browncoat, just like Mal's*

Now..if you and CK would like to head up a donut sendin' findin' committee why just go right on ahead. We're proud you're helpin' us think what to do!

CK, you're right and I think I will get started on those threads in the mornin'. We're sorta waitin' on a permanent spot that Haken was gonna do on the front page for a New Folks Area sort of, but I can see we're gettin' folks who need to know now, so I'll make some temporary q and a pages.

Thank you both and I'm sorry for any mix up.
Make yourself to home, Marine.

By the by, sir, thank you for your service to our country and to us. My father was career Army and I know what kind of sacrifice you make and your family too. Thank you.

There are no such things as stupid questions. Never.

A guerilla marketer is someone who markets Firefly/ Serenity in this case in unconventional ways. Someone who puts up posters, who puts bookmarks in a comic book store in all the comics, someone who wears t-shirts and hats or pins and buttons to advertise in this case the'verse. We're beginning to expand that out a little into the electronic realm by doing some stuff on the web. It began with the River Tam Sessions which were guerilla marketing/viral marketing released on the web before the movie ever started. We're in the process right now of having a fan made video trailer contest for the show and after we award the prizes, those vids are gonna get spread out across the web via myspace, google and youtube. Guerilla marketing is made by the fans marketing that works.

11th Hour is amazing at it. Been doin'it since the beginning.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

There are a whole lot of webcomics that mention or reference Firefly. I wish I wish I wish Penny Arcade was one of them; I've even seen some prime line-ups that didn't go where I thought they would. It's possible that they actually don't know about it, completely unrelated as it is to the gaming world at the moment.
However, quite a few others have made mention of the show. That I have seen: "The Devil's Panties" "Sam and Fuzzy" "The Nice Guy" "Comedity" and probably others that I can't bring to mind right now. The higher-profile ones ("Sam and Fuzzy" and "The Devil's Panties") sadly haven't made frequent reference, and the "Sam and Fuzzy" reference (in which one of the characters says "you can't stop the signal!") wasn't all that obvious. Maybe we can rope some of them in a little tighter. That'd be shiny.
And who knows how to send stuff to the boys at Penny Arcade? I mean, they only have the biggest comic on the web. It sure would be nice to have them on our side. Maybe if we sent them a boxset? Or the HD version of the movie (I'm sure they have a player; made a comic about it and everything, which was actually one of the Serenity reference line-ups that ended with the word "Doom" instead of "Serenity" and made me very sad - wow I am a geek) Or the HD version of the show when that comes out. Or something.
Anyway, there's my thoughts. An advert is also a good idea. Anything we can do, I think, is a good idea.

*edit* Hey look everybody! A Firefly mention!
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/02/08
Guess I missed this the first time I read it. Shiny!
And look, another one!
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/04/29
This one was from before I had even seen or heard of it, though. I'm sure I was very confused when I read it way back when...
Anyway, they are obviously fans (there were a few news posts, too) I wonder if, given a prod, they might make a few more mentions of the movie this month. (Wait, it's still August. I guess I mean next month...)

Hey FollowMal,

You did give me a browncoat and you did greet me. :)

I just want what everyone else wants. More Firefly. I do belive that we need to get everyone (every web site, yahoo group, browncoat club, friend, stranger (who wants to know what this show is about and doesn't know it yet), from every country on the same page. As you have said to many others, we need numbers to do anything. I know everyone is more then willing to help out, we just need to be organized about it. You know where I'm headed with this so...
Let's get it going.

Thank you for trying to help me out FollowMel.

It's funny. I didn't mean for my name to be Marine. I didn't relize that was what I was filling out. Nevertheless, thank you for your support. I do not think the military as a whole gets enough credit. Think about it, does a honorable condition have the same amount of weight as a degree? Even if our MOS was related? The benfits are very little as well. I know why I did joined and I am not looking for anything from anyone. I am just saying its nice to know that some people still understand what we do and moreso why. Anyways, thats a different topic.

That is a good question. I know they are busy guys. Only gaming can be discussed on their forums (though I've seen several locked threads from Browncoats) and who knows if they read those anyway? Maybe if there's a way to contact them, we could just send them something about the Signal Corps and say "it would be great for our campaign if you would slip a reference or two into your excellent comic". I've never seen a contact link; 'course, I've never really looked...

If you find a way to contact them, let me know, PR.

We certainly don't want another Browncoat locked thread on their forum. We want to be respectful and complimentary when we do this.

The Serenity screenings, I believe, should be our guide in how we handle guerilla marketing from now on. Browncoats kinda have a reputation for being pushy, loud and even obnoxious. We've got to change that. We're beginning to be known now for our respect and compassion.. we want to keep it that way.

Get's us lots further.

The idea about referencing the Signal Corps and just asking them to maybe mention it is a wonderful one. If we can find a nice way to do it.

No contact link. However, they do have their own convention expo thing (Penny Arcade Expo - PAX) It is, unfortunately, over. Well, damn. I was thinking someone could go, game a bit, buy them a drink and say "hey, I'm a really big fan, etc. So I've seen you like Firefly..."
I dunno. Might have worked.
They do have an e-mail link for advertising options. Maybe we could afford to advertise on their site? I do mail through yahoo, so the pop-up message thing doesn't work for me. I think that's the best hope we have.

Theres more comics than just Penny Arcade. Contacting them via private message in the Forum is possible. I was thinking of a more wide-spread comic contacting. Try and get every major gamer comic in on it. (PvP, VGCats, CTRL-ALT-DEL etc.)

Also worth a try is the huge fanbase of Sluggy Freelance and Schlock Mercenary. The second one is a sci-fi comic, so its likely to have the right fans for us. I think the author is a fan of Firefly too.

If theres anything else I can do to help, let me know. Im a Media Student, so advertising is something I should know a little about :)

Hey, if you and PR would like to explore finding a way to contact these gamer cartoons and making that a campaign before the Serenity 'Versary, that'd be great! Perhaps gather a crew up who would be willing to post on their forums or private message them?

If we do any advertising.. we'll holler Keyoke!

If you go to the news portion of the site (rather than the comic itself), each post says it was posted by either Tycho or Gabe -- you can click on their name and send an email directly to either. I've never gotten an email back from them, but I have been part of a large group of responses that got addressed in the news post, so I know they read them at least occasionally. Might be worth trying.

I found this info on wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerilla_marketing

These two principles seem to be most applicable to our situation:

• Instead of money, the primary investments of marketing should be time, energy, and imagination.

• Use current technology as a tool to empower your marketing.

That would be the Internet, I assume.

Listed under Tactics:

Quote:

Although there are many unconventional marketing techniques, the following is a sample:

* Word of mouth campaign
* Reaching the consumer directly through their daily routine
* Personal canvassing
* Forehead advertising/Headvertise campaign
* Bluejacking sending a personal message by bluetooth
* Telemarketing by all members of the firm
* Personal letters
* Advertisements in the Yellow Pages
* Personal meetings
* Circulars and brochures distributed at parking lots, homes, offices, malls, etc.
* Classified ads
* Ads in local community newspapers
* Billboards
* Truck and automotive signs
* Direct mail campaigns
* Seminars, lectures, and demonstrations
* Searchlights
* Flags and banners
* T-shirts
* Matches, pens, and calendars
* Interactive Urinal Communicator
* Advertisements printed on your own as well as other stores receipts

Also, the River Tam Sessions released on the web before the premiere of the BDM were a form of viral marketing.

Ooooh. I want a searchlight. Can we have a searchlight?
