When Lady Luck was on my side – Starfury Serenity; My experience!

It’s taken me just over five days, and it’s long, but here it is. And I’ve logged all my experiences with the BDH’s, and there are some interesting tidbits in here!

Okay, there is so much to tell so I guess I’ll start at the beginning. I got to the Thistle and met with Phoebe and her friend Nina, and then we all met FirefloozieSuzie and her lovely daughter Sami. And later we met Zol. And then in the afternoon I had the pleasure of meet Emma and Relfexive.

Okay the opening ceremony… when Summer was announced, she came out and everyone was clapping and cheering, then when everyone had finished I shouted “I LOVE YOU!” and she looked over at me and smiled, and I was so pleased!

Then later that night, a few of my lucky friends got to go to the meet and greet. And me and another friend were waiting for them to come down. We figure it must be over, so we go up the stairs to check it out, and halfway up, who do I run into? ALAN TUDYK! And I go wide-eyed, completely amazed. But I managed to speak and say “Alan, hey.” And then he stopped in front of me, shook me hand (I was numb!) and says “Hey, how ya doin?” I couldn’t believe it. Then I said “Good, thanks.” And he said “Okay, cool. I’ll see you later.” And he went down the stairs. I started to breathe again when I looked up and saw Jewel coming down the stairs as well! And I say “Hi Jewel.” And she says “Hey.” And I can’t think of anything, then I remembered something. “My little brother told me to tell you that he loves you.” To which she replies “Aww, that’s nice.” Then as she’s walking out I hear her say “I love this song.” Then I managed to recover. But I was kinda disappointed that Jewel wasn’t too chatty.

Then a few minutes later I was milling around in the car park, on the phone to my friend, telling her all about my recent BDH encounters, when Alan walks out of the hotel and right past me! I told my friend he was right in front of me, so I hung up and walk over and he says “Hey.” Then a few minutes later, I go over to the crowd where he’s standing, and I find a spot right next to him, and so he’s on my left. Then I look to see who I’m standing next to, who’s on my right side…and it was NATHAN FILLION! And then Alan and Nathan start talking to me, and were all talking about the Contender and Nathan was so funny. Then they have to go, so I shake Alan’s hand and say “Bye.” And I very nearly almost got to shake Nathan’s hand too! But no. And then I saw that Mark Sheppard aka Badger was standing on the other side of Alan. So I shook his hand and said “I love your hat – it’s amazing.” And he goes “Why thank you very much.” And I’d like to add that he is British! I thought he was American! And Badger’s accent isn’t put on, although somewhat exaggerated.

Later I was crossing the car park and I ran into Chris Buchanan, and he stopped and we talked for about 10 minutes. We talked about the cast, and how they are so much like a family. And we talked about the cancellation, and how determined Joss was to not give up. And that they decided on the film. Then I apologised for killing him on the “Buffy: Chaos Bleeds” game. And we talked about both Buffy games, and then about a Serenity game. And he told me that they will be doing one! Yay! That was pretty much it for my BDH encounters on Friday. I was completely dumbstruck, I had met 5 out of 8 of the BDH’s there within 4 hours of the opening ceremony.

Saturday

In the morning I had my first photo session! With Summer (drool!), Morena, and Jewel! And the first one was? Summer! My knees were shaking as I got closer and closer to the front of the cue. She looked amazing. She was wearing a short frayed, denim skirt, and I have to agree with Zol that her legs look amazing, brown boots, and a cream top. Then it comes to my turn. So I go up to her and say “Hi.” And she says “Hey.” Then I say… “Last night when you came out, when everyone had finished clapping and someone shouted ‘I LOVE YOU!’- that was me.” And she said “Aww, thank you!” and the next thing I know, she throws her arms around me and hugs me! I’m in heaven! And I expected her to pull back, but she didn’t! She just held on and we had our photo taken like that! I’m just thinking… Summer Glau is hugging me!! Then we had our photo taken, and I said “You look fantastic. Thank you.” And she said “Thanks.” And I walked away, grinning from ear-to-ear! Then I had my photo done with Jewel, and Morena and they were both very nice.

Now, I had planned to get my group photo done on Sunday, and all my singles done on Saturday, then I’d have photos with them in both of their outfits. When I got out, and checked the schedule, I realised they weren’t doing the group photo session on Sunday. I was like…oh poop! And the cash machine in the Thistle had run out of dosh, and I’m only allowed to take £100 a day out of my account too. I asked on of the Stewards where the nearest cash machine was, and they told me that there was a garage a 20 minute walk down the road, with an ATM there. And the group photo shoot was only on for 45 minutes. So I go running down the road, and I can’t see no garage. Eventually I ask some lovely people, and they tell me to try the post office in Colnbrook…so eventually after a long while of running and stopping I find a cash machine in some shop. And it only gave me £60 when I wanted £70 so I could get a taxi back to the hotel so I won’t be too late. But I call the taxi service and they tell me it’s a £10 minimum!? (It was one of those airport car things..) So I hung up and went back to the running thing. Trying to remember the way I came. And I’m only halfway back, and its 5 minutes to the end of the photo shoot. So I admitted defeat and just stopped and decided to walk. When I finally get back to the hotel, the photo shoot is still going!! Yay! So I go to buy a ticket, and they tell me that they’re not selling anymore. No! About ten minutes later I passed a very nice lady I had been talking to the day before, and informed here of my troubles – I must have run about 3 miles! – and then she takes me to a very nice Steward lady, who she is friends with, and she blags me a ticket! So I got my group photo! How lucky was that?!

Then I had my photo with Nathan, I was in awe of him. Truly. I go to stand with him, he shakes my hand and says “Hi, I’m Nathan, what’s your name?” and I’m so nervous I just go “Huh?” and he smiled and said “Your name?” and I went, “Oh! Matt.” Then we had our photo done and I looked really nervous, lol. Then I had my photo with Alan, and he remembered me from the night before.

And that afternoon I plucked up the courage to go up and ask Summer & Ron a question. This is what I can remember.
Me: Hey. This is a question for both of you. Okay, so the trailer was released online this week, and I found the response mind-blowing. I got up at 6am and ran downstairs to check my PC, then later we realised the trailer wasn’t being released until 9pm that night! So I stayed at my computer most of the day, and only left to go to class. And we had started what we called the “Refresh-a-thon” just repeatedly clicking refresh to see if it had been uploaded. And I think we probably crashed the Apple site. And the boards were chocka-block for hours after it was released, and they just wouldn’t load. So my question is how have you personally found the response to the trailer?

Summer: It’s been amazing…my dad was getting fustrated because he couldn’t watch the trailer, because so many people were watching it. And my mom was online, waiting for it, and she always talks to the other fans, but doesn’t tell them who she is, and so she went to bed, then she went back on the next morning and was like ‘Ahh, your all still here? Hi!’ So, yeah it’s been fantastic. I love the fans, we wouldn’t be here without them. And I-I…I feel very close to the fans…

(And she continued on about the fans…I can’t quite remember what she said, but at this point, she was staring straight into my eyes, and she started to cry! I nearly melted! Then I said something to Ron that I have had on my mind since watching the special features…)

Me: And Ron, you have, the most charming, laugh…I have ever heard.

(And I’m guessing everyone else agreed with me, because they all applauded.)

Me: And I hang my head in shame to say that I haven’t seen any of your other work, but I would love to see in the role of a villain, because that laugh would really work for you.

Ron: Well perhaps you could organise that for me?

Me: Sure. My people will contact your people, and we’ll make a deal.

Ron: Great.

Me: Okay, thanks a lot you guys.

And that was it for my questions!

Later I had my photo with Ron, and he recognised me and was very nice.

Then I had my first Autograph session. On Saturday I got the second group, Alan, Nathan, Morena and Mark. Nathan told me that his name was very nearly Matthew, but his brother was called Jeff, so it would have been “Matt & Jeff” – or “Mutt & Jeff” so they went with Nathan. Then Morena, she was nice. I didn’t have anything for Mark to sign, so I went straight to Alan. And he signed my group photo, and accidentally signed it as “Matty” then he realised, and then he decided that could be nickname. Lol Then he signed my 10x8 of him, but he just signed, and didn’t write my name, I think he misheard me lol.

Saturday night’s party!

All the guests came out to party with us for a while, apart from Summer and Ron. And I got to talk to Jewel Staite, for at least 40 minutes! It was soo much fun. We talked about so many different things.

We talked about the Strawberry eating scene, and she blushed! And she told me about how she wants Kaylee to have a baby! She would love for her to have a baby! And we talked about how the crew already feels like such a family, and that Simon could deliver it, and Sheppard Book could christen the child! And we talked about how some fans want Jayne and Kaylee to get together, and how Jewel thought it was a really weird idea and didn’t agree. We talked about her scene with Jubal Early in OIS, and how it was to film. She told us that Joss told her to take it where she wanted, and was very loose with it, he let Jewel make it her own. She told us about how angry Joss was when he told them they were cancelled. And about how she had to call Gina and Sean to tell them, because they weren’t filming that day. So she called Sean and left him a message – “Hey, it’s me. We’ve been cancelled. Come to Nathan’s and bring loads of wine.” – and when he walked into Nathan’s, the first thing Sean said was “But we never got to kiss!” lol! We talked about our experiences of bleaching our hair, and how it was a big mistake!! And she told us all to never mention politics to Adam Baldwin, because he will just go on and on and on. She told us about her wedding, and about how the cast really wanted to come. She told Nathan and he said “Cool, I’ll come.” And Jewel was like “No, you don’t have to.” And he just said “I’ll come.” Their wedding was abroad…somewhere, the name escapes me. So I’ll just say Hawaii lol.So two weeks before the wedding Nathan rang Jewel and said “I’m in Hawaii, where are you?”. And she told us that she was out drinking with Morena…and she mentioned that she needed a maid of honour, because the scheduled one couldn’t make it, and Morena replied “I’m gonna be your f*ckin maid of honour! Why do you think I came all the way out here?!” lol. And Jewel told us that Nathan gave a beautiful speech at her wedding, and made everyone cry. She told us about how close the cast is, like a family. And whenever she had a problem, Nathan would be there in a second. Like one guy asked if he could take a photo of he tattoos, and she has one on her lower back, and one on her hips. And it was summer, so she was wearing shorts, and she thought it was a bit weird, and was a bit uncomfortable, but she said Okay, and pulled her shorts down a little at the side, and then Nathan came over and said “Whoa, whoa, whoa…what’s going on?” and Jewel says “He was just taking a photo of my tattoos.” And then Nathan turns to the guy and says “I’m sorry, but no.” and the guy goes… “I didn’t mean anything.” And Nathan says “That’s good. But no.” Such a heart-warming story! We also talked about how some fans were over-analysing the trailer, and here’s what Jewel had to say about it; “That trailer was made to appeal to sci-fi, action fans…and there are going to be loads of trailers made between now and September, there’ll be romantic trailers, comedy trailers…all set to appeal to different people and genre’s. The trailer isn’t the film, so nobody has anything to worry about.” And we talked about how Kaylee was still really girly even though she was a mechanic, and how we’d all love to see her fixing the engine in a dress! We talked about conventions, and fans. She was just so casual! And her husband was chatting to flans close-by. And get this, she called Nathan “The captain!” Sean Harry came over to tell Jewel that most of the guys were going now, and did they wanna come, or were they going to stay for a while? And Jewel said “Okay lemme just go speak to the captain.” I was like WOW! Also, I was talking to Hayley, her liaison person, who I believe is Jewel’s make-up artist. She was really nice and really funny. And she disappeared for a few minutes, then she came back wearing this hat that was covered in tin foil with loads of strawberries on cocktail sticks poking off of it. And they made Jewel re-enact the Strawberry-eating scene from “Serenity” off of her make-up artists hat! And then we were all eating strawberries off this hat, it was so surreal! And her husband was taking photos. And Nathan was always around. And he kept popping up behind me, leaning over my shoulder, making faces at Jewel. So I would turn around and Nathan would be standing right there! He was so funny! And he remembered my name from earlier on. He says “It’s Matt isn’t it?” and I was so flattered! And then Jewel had to go, and I got 3 hugs and 3 kisses! I was in heaven! How lucky?! Then I spoke with Morena and her husband for about 20 minutes. And Morena was really funny. We talked about her cutting her hair, the DVD sales, my favourite funny scene of Inara’s, and her husband was being funny, telling us how he’d “Killed 7 men with my pinkie!” lol! Then Nathan came over and was telling us what he said to Sean Harry about how to pronounce her name… “Rain? Falls from the sky? – ‘More-Rain-A’.”

Later on I got to talk to Clare Kramer for a few minutes, and I very nearly got a hug and a photo, but no! Me and my friends were telling her how we wish she had a photo shoot, and about what we could do to get one for next time.

I had planned to make a trip to the Airport after 12.00am that night, to find an ATM, to get money to buy my Serenity² ticket the next morning. The ATM in the hotel room had ran out of cash, and due to my bank account, I could only take a certain amount of money out each day. And I had already taken some out that day, so I was gonna have to wait til after midnight. And I wanted to buy it as early as possible Sunday morning, so that I could get into the meet and greet at Serenity². But when I walked into the hotel reception, I saw that their ATM had been refilled! Praise Joss!! How damn lucky was that!? So I got out the cash for my Serenity² ticket, then an extra £10 for another photo with Summer the next day, I couldn’t resist! So I got to bed that night at about 4am. And I called reception to get a wake-up call for 7.30 to queue for my ticket.

So I get my wake-up call on Sunday morning, then I laid back down for a second, then I opened my eyes, and it was 10 o clock! GOSA!! So I pulled on some clothes, ran down stairs, and across to the Thistle. There I saw Phoebe and she told me that she had gotten her ticket, and that the meet and greet tickets had all gone now. I was like “Nooooooooooooooo!” So I queued up, and there were only like 4 people there…and then I paid for my ticket and the lady says “Your ticket number 175, and you’ll be pleased to know that you’ve made it into the meet and greet.” Then I go “What?! I did? Really?!” and she says “Yes.” And I was jumping for joy. I said “Up to what ticket number get into the meet and greet next time then?” And she says “Up to 175.” So I got the very last one, how damn lucky is THAT!?

So I go back to the hotel, get showered, get changed then go back down for my second photo with Summer. And I think she remembered me from the day before, but of course, we hadn’t been introduced yet, so she greeted me with “Hey guy.” Then we posed for out photo, and she leant on my shoulder, so I leant on her. Yay!

Then later on, we had the group Q&A, that was so fantastic. And someone asked them what their original thoughts were, on each other, when they first met. And Alan was saying how he thought they had got everyone right, except Mal, the captain. He didn’t think the guy was suited for the role at all, and it was going to be awful, and he was so disappointed etc. So he goes up to him and says “Hey, so you’re the captain.” And then he replies “No, I’m the doctor.” LMAO! And Morena was saying how she got Adam and Nathan confused. She thought Nathan was playing Jayne, and Adam was Mal. And she though that Adam made sense as the captain, cos he was, a big guy, but that Nathan would be an awful Jayne. And she didn’t realise until they came to read scripts! And all the cast were talking about each other, and Summer cried, followed by Ron. And Nathan said the most beautiful things as well. The only one I can remember is when he was talking about Summer. “Summer is like the little sister I never had.” Audience: Aww…. Nathan: “…or wanted.” Lmao!

Then it was my turn for the second autograph group! Summer, Ron, Jewel and Chris. I had nothing for Chris to sign, so I went to Jewel. And she remembered me from the night before. And I asked how she was feeling this morning and she said “Not too bad actually, just tired.” Then she gave me one of those lovely Kaylee postcards, and she even signed it for me, which she didn’t have to! Then I moved on to Summer! Yay! She greeted me again with “Hey guy.” And I shook her hand and introduced myself. And we talked about how much I was looking forward to the film, and the trailer looked really good. And I said that she nearly made me cry when she was answering my question in the Q & A on Saturday, and talking about the fans. And she says “Aww, well I do feel really close to my fans.” Then I told her about how I just made it into the meet and greet, and she was pleased. So I told her that I’d see her in November. Then she signed my first 10x8 – “Oh Matt! Has so much fun! See you soon?! (Heart) Summer Glau.” Then my second 10x8 – “Hi Matt! No power in the verse… (heart) Summer Glau.” Then she signed my group 10x8 – “Matt, it’s me…” like we’ve been friends for years or something! “(heart) Summer Glau”. Then I showed her the first photo we had taken, and said thank you for a great photo. Then she said that she had just a second ago, signed the second one. And then she says it. “You are so photogenic.” Then I blushed and said “No, I’m really not.” And she says “No, you are!” and I said “Well I guess it must be rubbing off from you guys, because these are the best photo’s I’ve ever had taken.” And then she said “Well our second one is even better than the first one, it’s lovely!” So I said, “Really? Wow, thank you! Well, it was nice to meet you. Thank you for everything, and hopefully I’ll get to see you in November!” she said “Aww, thank you! Bye!” Then I had my photo with Ron, and he signed my pictures then I once again told him “You really do have the best laugh ever!”

Then, I managed to go back to the first autograph group! To get Alan to personalize my 10x8! And I spoke to Mark, and he said “Oh, your not in costume today.” And I thought he had confused me with someone else and said “No, I wasn’t in costume yesterday.” And then he laughed and said “I know, I’m just kidding you.” And I was like, doh! “Over my head” lol. Then he was telling me how his arm ached from signing so much. Then Morena remembered me from the talking at the party the night before. Then Nathan remembered me name, again! I was so flattered! Then Alan personalized my 10x8, once again to “Matty” lol.

Then it was the closing ceremony. I thought I’d wrap things up nicely by finishing the way I started. When Summer was announced, and everyone had finished clapping, I shouted “I love you!” again, and she laughed and looked over to me and smiled. Then at the end I went up to Summer and said “Bye!” and I got a hug! And you know how theres like an average time period for a hug? You hug and you let go? Well, she didn’t let go! She held on! For like extra! So I held on, too! And her hair is so smooth! Then I pulled back and said “When you come out in November, and everyone’s finished clapping, and someone shouts “I love you!” – that’ll be me. Thank you for everything, see you in November. Bye” HOW DAMN LUCKY WAS THAT?!! Then she said thank you and goodbye and that was pretty much it.

SOMEBODY must've noticed you two grappling each other; like you said, that hug went on for extra innings. (If my camera could've taken decent pictures, I'd have had time to shoot a dozen.)

So whoever is out there with a picture of Matt's big makeout session with Summer? Post it already!

Hi and thanks for the report, we were there and had a great time, the guests really made the weekend special.

I was there with my two small daughters and Summer made a great fuss of them, blowing them kisses from the stage during the closing ceremony and during our autograph session with Summer she thanked us for bringing the girls, she said 'They have made my weekend'

We had many great encounters with other cast members, including being stopped by Nathan in the carpark after the closing session and being asked by him if we would mind if he took our photo ! Which he did 'There, a photo of my favorite family' One for the Fillion album ?

Still glowing a week later !

See you at Serenity 2 !

I know what you mean - I still keep remembering stuff. It's why I've not written such a definitive report as this one as yet.

Mind you - here's something: remember how during the photo ops some folks would get to talk to the guest(s) in question for a spell while the film got changed in the camera?

I got to do that. With a certain Mr Nathan Fillion

And what did we talk about? How we still use miles instead of kilometres, and how we recently-ish had to start using metric for weights and such. I know, I know: exciting, heady stuff! I was just agreeing that yes, metric is better, makes more sense, when it was picture time and then I had to go.

If only I could forget how, when asked where I had come from, I babbled something about coming from Derbyshire. Then he pointed out that he wasn't "a local boy" and didn't know how far away that was from London. Doh!

Ah well.

Hmmm... if only I could remember who it was who told me they had a nice little chat with Summer about how they had gotten their jumper from the Edinburgh Wool Shop... That must've been fun

Oh, and I almost forgot: somewhere out there is a car, and on it's dashboard is one of those Serenity patches. The patch came from me; the dashboard belongs to some guy named Nathan
