I know there was some discussion a while ago - all in good fun - about the title of the BDM. Some argued that the name did not tell the non-fan much about the movie, and could even be misleading. I contend that the movie "poster" that I see at the Apple trailer site is even less informative and more misleading. Watch the trailer again and look at the poster - do they match?! If you had never heard of the show and saw the poster would you know what the movie was about? Would you have a guess? Would you even care?
There were even a few jokes about the Serenity book that was recently published, that clerks may think people were buying a selfhelp book unless they read the rest of the title in fine print.
I don't know about you but when I go to the movies I check out the other movies playing by looking at their posters. Shouldn’t the poster be a little more revealing and informative and compelling for the average movie goer?

There's a bonus feature on the Twelve Monkey's DVD called "The Hampster Factor" - it's a great documentry about the making of the movie.

There's a part on it were Terry Gilliam is going throught the promo material to figure out the marketing campaign - they get to what will be the main image :-

AND EVERYBODY GOES NUTS!!!!

They were saying that it showed real balls to use an image like that - simple, strong, ambiguous - like Jurassic Park -

Same kind of thing, simple - doesn't tell you alot (if anything)

Look at ours again -

We'll be fine -

Twelve Monkeys Total US Gross $57,141,459

Jurassic Park Total US Gross $357,067,947

sans inflation.

America loves a winner!

I'll never forget when I saw the JP display in a theatre. The movie was still months away, and aparently the dad towing his 2 kids hadn't yet read ( or heard of ) the book. Naturally, the kids (7-10ish in age) were all Wow! Cool! What's that?, and their dad was trying to act non chalant, but he couldn't stop from staring at it. He looked at it for a few moments, and eventually uttered a 'Huh..I don't know....',then ushered the kids to what ever movie they had come for. The look on that guy's face was said it all! Talk about making an impression!

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

JP had a certain guy named Steven Spielberg directing which guaranteed box office - not to mention a million dollar ad campaign that goes with a Spielberg film. And that is clearly a dinosaur on the poster. A Speilberg film about dinos that has endless promos and adverts = everyone on the planet knows what the film is about.
Twelve Monkeys? $57 million gross ain't that great. If HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy wants to be ballsey with their marketing - cool! I don't care. If Serenity no. 5 wants to go mysterious - sweet, that means a lot of non fans saw the first 4. This is the one that counts the most.

JP Poster: Spielberg + Williams + Dinosaurs
Serenity: A calm word + Chinese Characters and a ? gong? Seriously - ask anyone at work that doesn't know the show and see if they have a clue or would even be curious.
I ramble... but AURAPTOR makes the point:
"but he couldn't stop from staring at it (poster). He looked at it for a few moments, and eventually uttered a 'Huh..I don't know....',then ushered the kids to what ever movie they had come for. The look on that guy's face was said it all! Talk about making an impression!"
There are a lot of films viaing for viewers'attentions, being subtle and ambiguous when future movies are at stake seems like a huge risk.

You must remember that they have changed the logo so the chinese script runs vertical now and does indeed look better - my question is will people wnt to know about the movie from the Tag line "Can`t stop the Signal"?

I know what it`s all about, but I doubt others would - and then there`s the word `Serenity` probably doesn`t mean anything to anyone (outside of firefly) as to what the film is about

My only thing is that the final posters maybe haven`t been finalised yet - just like there is more trailers to come.

I am fairly sure that if you click on the image on Apple.com it says its a temporary poster. I don't think its anywhere near the finished item.

Speaking of self help books, what do you think people would have thought of the film below based on seeing its original teaser poster.

Though, once they released the final poster it suddenly becomes all very clear.

Well maybe not that clear, what was Total Recall about again?

A teaser poster is used while the studio sorts out the best way to advertise a film. We can expect to see a more revealing poster as we get closer to the release date.

Maybe the final poster will look something like this.

Is that Book I see standing in the background and Mal and Inara about to kiss and behind Mal an Inara is that the good ship Serenity her self.

I know I don't know marketing like Universal... but... seems odd that you would make your trailer debut at Apple Trailers - a heavily trafficked site for movie lovers/fans - and use your "draft" poster. I think you're right, just seems like an odd strategy and inconsistent with their approach to the trailer with its more/louder/faster approach.

The poster hasn't been done yet (I know, I have access to 'versal's press website, and Serenity is still showing as 'No Poster Art').

The marketing material (incluing the poster) is being shot next week with the cast.

57 Million back in 1995 was pretty good - that's why I used Twelve Monkeys as an example before I ran right for the JP.
