I love love love the BDT (that's Big Damn Trailer, of course). And it got me to thinking. There's a HUGE issue about how Lucas reedited the original Star Wars movie that I think is a total copout, the so-called Han Shot First controversy:

http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1531878&lastnode_id=1372629

which has spawned many T-shirts:

But now we know ... Mal Shot First!!!

I cheered! I STOOD UP AND CHEERED when I saw...what I saw in the trailer. I was thinking...you know, I'd probably do the same thing, which truly adds to the appeal of something like that, on both Han and Mal's parts.

Kaylee: "What's so damn important about being proper? It don't mean nothing out here in the black."
Simon: "It means more out here. It's all I have..."

Well, The Operative couldn't shoot first, given the fact he's unarmed. But, you are right - Mal's "shoot first, ask questions later" attitude is great.

Yeah...You're coming after me and mine and you've got the balls to say "I'm unarmed."!

Well, allow me to retort!

Oh, and in response to your prompt:

that's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the trailer, too, and I'm only a moderate Star Wars fan. I'm sure many, many people made the connection, and I'm just as sure that Joss did that on purpose. Not really a slap in the face to Lucas, but more of a way of showing all the dissapointeed SW fans that they can get what they like here.

what ever happened to "if i ever kill you, you'll be facing me and you'll be armed" bit? i guess you could argue that mal may not kill the other guy or that it may have been a little "creative editing" and those lines are not actually connected in the finished movie.

I'm sure that was to Simon exclusively. I'm pretty sure that if Kaylee had died due to Simon's threatened inaction, he would have blown Simon out the airlock. I do not believe, however, that he would've thrown River out. The lines may not match up in the movie, but I've a sneaking suspicion that they are. If Simon, or anyone else had done the things that the Op is shown as doing...and I won't mention them here, except to say that we all know he's the bad guy, then I don't think's Mal would think twice about pluggin' him. See...Crow, who was unarmed, though facing, our Captain, when he took his upclose inspection for Foreign Object Damage of Serenity's engine.

Mal is honorable but he's not stupid. Threaten the safety of his crew and he'll end you.
Simon wasn't a threat. He wasn't a violent assassin sent to destroy Mal and the crew. There's your difference.

I can answer regarding if that bit is in the movie...

Select to view spoiler:

Yes, it's in the movie, and exactly as seen. It's the first time Mal meets The Operative. He listens for a minute to see why The Operative is doing what he's doing, and then pulls his gun out as seen.

I remember being in the cinema at the time, thinking "fucking 'ell, that's a BRILLIANT scene, I hope it's in the trailer". And it is. It shows Mal is purely out to protect his crew, and isn't taking any shit in the process.

i have to ask even though it is kind of a stupid question but did you get the phrase "foreign object damage" from somewhere?

In the Air Force, commonly used on the flightline and in FOD prevention programs. Air Force members (or any military, actually) who work near aircraft are asked to police the area and remove anything that might get sucked into an intake and damage engine blades, etc. It is a very costly problem, and we are asked DAILY to look into this.

It is also mentioned in one of the essays in "Finding Serenity" but I can't remember which one offhand...

Not to be confused with Dropped Object Damage, which is what results from something falling off an aircraft when it shouldn't (read...in the wrong place!)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I cheered when I saw Mal shoot. I thought to myself that is how it should be done. No banter, no mincing words, no drawn out speeches, just shoot the bad guy without giving him the chance to pull something. Simple and efficient.

FOD is also what happens when you're rather unbrilliant enough to not consider what *happens* when you light into someone with cannon while zooming up their six.

I bet that F-105 jockey caught holy hell from maintainence for that one, too.

I don't remember details of said incident, but it's rather infamous, Sarge might know more.

Remember from War Stories? When they're rescuing Mal they find him fighting Niska's henchman, and Zoe says " This is something the Captain needs
to do himself.
",

and Mal replies,... " No, it's not --! "

to which Zoe and Jayne respond by filling the bad guy w/ lead.

MAL: Haven't you killed me enough for one day?

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same
