Okay, this has probably already been asked, but since i was MIA for a little while I may have missed it.

There is only one thing, and on thing alone that I would like to know about Serenity in advance, and that is: Did Joss defy physics and put sound in space? I've heard conflicting comments around here so i'm just wondering...

thank you in advance for whoever tells me this one tidbit!

As I recall it, the sound is either inside the ships or as they enter atmo in the first place. cetainly there are plenty of space scenes with no sound.

No worries and stay shiny...

While I always like the "no sound in space" reality of Firefly, I always wonder why so many prefer it. I mean, it is the only concession to reality in space. What about gravity? FTL? Aliens? Why is the sound issue so important when all these other issues are ignored?

I love the fact that Firefly has no sound in space and no Aliens, because it sets it apart from others in the SciFi genre. What do you mean by it being the only concession to reality in the show with no Aliens? Have we found extraterrestrial life out in the universe?

Read "Finding Serenity". It has an essay that explains why there aren't aliens (what are the chances that there is life anywhere near us), questions the terraforming issues (what are the chances that they'll find one planet or moon with the same everything that Earth has), etc...

Plus, I believe Jos has explained in the past that the no sound in space was an artistic decision rather than one of physics. Plus about every other sci-fi has sound in space. Why should Firefly follow that premise as well?

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

The last cut I saw DID have sound in it. However, a vast majority of the space scenes had no sound - there was only one (and I could see why they added it).

I doubt anyboy will even notice it, as at the time there is so much else going on.

The main reason I liked the no sound in space was that it made it seem real tranquil like. The ship would be flying around and all you would hear is a fiddle playing. It was just really neat.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Our understanding of gravity will more than likely change within the next 500 years, so that is a question we shouldn't concern ourselves with. FTL? It is my opinion there is no FTL travel in Firefly, so again no worry. Aliens are ignored because they ain't there. There is no sound in space since there is no air to transmit the sound waves. Joss got it right, that is what is important, and we don't want the suits at Uni to change that.

I wouldn't say it's 'so' important, but it is one element of the show that gave it a significantly different tone from the usual television sci-fi. For me it's not a question of realism, but more of emphasis. Joss had chosen to portray space, at least in the series, with an indication of just how vast and empty it really is. It even has a certain metaphoric quality when you consider how the crew of Serenity are outsiders from the rest of society.

I won't skip the movie based on something as minor as the sound issue, but it is important. It's part of what made "2001: A Space Odyssey" such a different movie from "Star Wars". It also implies a different pacing that I like in comparison to the usual action/adventure/sci-fi.
