Mal: That it was manly and impulsive?
Inara: Yes, precisely, only the exact phrase I used was "don't."

The song is entitled "Club Foot"

My thoughts on the Serenity trailer, one day later....

Well the trailer is appealing to the mainstream masses, with it's formulaic lay out (as someone mentioned that the Hitcchiker's Guide to the Galaxy amusingly noted) and implication that it is a simply good vs. bad choice.

This to me is an incredibly smart move on the part of Joss and Universal. The film needs to make money...lots of people coming to watch it will make it money. Perhaps a few will be confused or feel cheated that this is not their usual, same-storyline-different-pretty-actors-and-excessive-uses-of-fights-and-killings-and-sex movie, but it doesn't matter, they've spent the money..

They are also trying to reel in sci-fi fans which this does very well, and I suspect that though the movie will probably be dramatically less western than the series, there will probably be a lot of western influences still present.

It seems to me that trailers rarely give a big sense of the movie or the plot these days, but is a marketing technique. Lots of explosions, lots of cool one liners, lots of danger, a big scary villain, a big shiny space ship..set to rock music etc...

Also, personally I think referencing Buffy and Angel will pull in many folk who just thought it was another Hellboy or suchlike, and then remembered that funny show from a few years back (I know many people who thought it was cool and watched it, but werent overly obsessed with it like I.)

Finally....damn I just love it so much. There's such potential, you see such flashings, almost subliminal messages to the hardcore fans, and I'm sure "You can't stop the signal" is a huge plot device, but Joss must have noticed the double meaning. When I realised what it was implying..danced like an E-numbered child did I. It offers such a God-damn lot to us and I'm incredibly grateful, and again incredibly over excited.

I need a good flannel and a good lie down....

"This mummy hand has ceased to exist! It is an ex-mummy hand!"

Also, did anyone tear up at the "And loved by millions of fans worldwide"

It was like a little shoutout or a little thank-you *sniffs*

Hmm...maybe the signal thing...could be about River...and they have some kind of trigger... this would explain why she kicks Simon... and Jayne's "The only people she's a threat to is us on this boat."

But then again he never was a big River fan.

Yeah, I remember going to see "The Village" last year, expecting a horror, and getting something very different.

Can`t stop the signal is rather specific - River is involved, yes!

P1nkispunk, you're right. I watched the trailer as if I hadn't seen the series, and as a sci-fi fan only, it made me want to see the movie. That's so rare, trailers usually turn me OFF to a movie 'cause it's always same-o same-o, but Serenity's trailer screams originality! And effects that put Attack of the Clones to shame!! Technical brilliance can't beat creativity and a love of the project.

My only question: Greg Edmundson? Western music? No?

Nah, it's clearly Earth.

Check out 00:56 to see what I am talking about. You can see Florida, Cuba, the Yucatan Peninsula, etc...

Righty oh... if anybody wants it below is a download for the song used in the trailer called Club Foot by Kasabian (this is a cd rip so it is great quality).

I was blown away by the design of the trailer although I thought the quotes were hellishly tacky and made me dig the film less...

I have a hypothesis... judging from that first shot of earth..

Select to view spoiler:

do you think that Earth could be the reaver homeworld that people have been getting so excited about 'cos that would be cool.

Here's my problem though: it's so BIG. The plot, I mean. It seems so epic. One of the things I like so much about Firefly is that it's NOT the fate of the universe that's threatened. It's just them, plus the people they encounter directly. We definitely see a strong undercurrent of the power-centres in the universe (Alliance, mainly), but these powers affect them far more than they affect the powers. It's real, and it's personal - allowing for things like the funny exchanges between characters, marital spats, ongoing tensions, running jokes... I guess I'm just worried that everything I like best about the show will be lost when it's blown up into a movie. The trailer shows armadas of ships and what looked like destroyed cities - this makes me very worried.

And besides, if my expectations are low, I'll like the BDM even better, right?

And of course this didn't stop me from watching the trailer three or four times at 4:04 in the afternoon...

This sums up my concerns from the moment the movie project was announced. We may just have to accept the fact that our favorite elements of the show won't be returning, at least not as the focus. And that sucks, but I think it'll be a LONG way from a BDAM (Big Dumb Action Movie)

Indeed the trailer does rock, however I share some of the same concerns about it as others. For one, I've been through it a fair few times and it definitely seems like there's sound in space. So unless this is just a trailer-gimmick, this is not a good thing.
Also, it seems a little too heavy on the action/sci-fi thing. There's lots of big space 'splodes and battles and the like, but very little of the smaller-scale stuff you get in the series. I'm not saying that large-scale is bad, just that it might not fit with traditional Firefly.

The trailer seems a little too mainstream. I've got a friend who's seen it and commented that it just looks like another cheesy action/sci-fi film. Perhaps some more of the Firefly uniqueness could have been used to grab the attention of thems as aren't familiar with the series.

All-in-all, I'm in two minds about the film. On one side, I've got my brain jumping up and down with glee shouting "eeeeeeeeee!". On the other side, I've got the more sensible side of my brain pondering if Joss had to make too many concessions to the regular movie-going plebs out there for the film to be more than a shadow of the Firefly we all know and love.
I guess I've just got to wait and see what else I see, and trust that Joss gave us what we all want and hope for :).

On a related note, much happy that Kaylee's in the film, albeit not much in the trailer. Had to go frame-by-frame to confirm that she was there :).

And yes. Wash has the greatest line in the history of fantastic trailer lines.

What in heavens name happened with my discussion post? I send one and my browser sends 4. I have a feeling that, being the day of the trailer release, all of me went a little insane.

Still. Have now downloaded that gorgeous Hi Def version and I'd just like to say that it looks even more gorgeous in Hi Def. Although my video driver crashed so I had to download an update - yowser, that hi def stuff finds video drivers hard to use!

But it was worth it - smoother, cleaner, and Kaylee lookin even more pretty. If that is at all possible! Though it seems to be your classic trailer!

Sound in space? Hmmmm! I'm wondering if you can actually get sound from an explosion if you are surrounded by it... after all, if the explosion is coming from an internal area that has air, as long as the air has not expanded too much, sound would travel. But if it's the good ole Star Trek hum of engines through a vacuum, then - Joss what happened?

Finally, reckon Book must be in it now as he mentions the movie in the Comic Con clip - thank god! Not that he's my favourite character, but the team needs to stick together because Mal says so!
