Wow that is beautiful. Wish that was my name. My first name is Melanie and for the sake of anonimity I'll let you figure out what my last name is. By the way, I am reminded of the guy who always wanted a personalized liscence plate so he changed his name to JFZ36HQ.

If each "pebble" was just one atom of phosphorus (you didn't specify which phosphorous compound, but I reckon there's @least a chance the original poster meant phosphorus; besides, a molecule of any phosphorous compound will mass more than one atom of phosphorus), the contents of the container would mass 10 to the 50th power times the Earth. And it would have to be covered with water, lest it spontaneously burst into flame. But there isn't that much water in the Milky Way (and notwithstanding ambiguity as to whether Firefly takes place within one planetary system, or many, nor some ham-fisted dialogue in one of the eps, it is obvious that Firefly takes place within a small region of the Orion arm of the Milky Way), so some of the pebbles will be exposed. But the burning wouldn't last long, 'cause a fraction about 10 to the minus 53rd power of the stuff would use up all the oxygen in Earth's atmosphere. Make that Earth-That-Was.

I would've gone for something like a google of academic tact, which might just be measurable.

"kurofune" (black ship)
It's Japanese, but I've hijacked its meaning into something of my own silly creation (much to the amusement of my Japanese classmates).

A lot like Mal's line in Serenity, where he mentions something like "that changes the landscape." It's an expletive uttered when a new situation arises that brings potential complications or difficulties.

Kind of like Perry's black ships back in the 19th century.

EMBERS

I found the poem about my favorite word:
by Ogden Nash

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S VELLEITY

Seated one day at the dictionary I was pretty weary
and also pretty ill at ease,
Because a word I had always liked turned out not to
be a word at all, and suddenly I found myself among the v’s,
And suddenly among the v’s I came across a new word
which was a word called velleity,
So the new word I found was better than the old word
I lost, for which I thank my tutelary deity,
Because velleity is a word which gives me great satisfaction,

Because do you know what it means, it means low degree
of volition not prompting to action,
And I always knew I had something holding me back
but I didn’t know what,
And it’s quite a relief to know it isn’t a conspiracy,
it’s only velleity that I’ve got,
Because to be wonderful at everything has always been my ambition,
Yes indeed, I am simply teeming with volition,
So why I never was wonderful at anything was
something I couldn’t see
While all the time, of course, my volition was merely
volition of a low degree,
Which is the kind of volition that you are better off without it,
Because it puts an idea in you head but doesn’t prompt
you to do anything about it.

So you think it would be nice to be a great pianist but
why bother with practicing for hours at the keyboard,
Or you would like to be the romantic captain of a romantic ship
but can’t find time to study navigation or
charts of the ocean or the seaboard;
You want a lot of money but you are not prepared to work for it,
Or a book to read in bed but you do not care to go
into the nocturnal cold and murk for it;
And now if you have any such symptoms you can
identify your malady with accurate spontaneity;
It’s velleity,
So don’t forget to remember that you’re velleitous,
and if anybody says you’re just lazy,
Why they’re crazy.

Hehehe. I too have looked for it. I've considered writing a Redneck Lingo book. I have heard it now on both the West coast (Oregon) and the East Coast(NY) of America.

Hoogerbobbin : To ride an innertube, that is tied to the back of a pickup truck, down a dirt road or two-track (ruts created by a tractor or farm equipment) near or around rural country.

To make a long story short, I dated a girl in Portland, Oregon (pretty young thing) who had bruises all over her butt after a weekend at her family's farm. I asked her what they were all about and she said "I went Hoogerbobbin this weekend" and proceeded to explain herself and what Hoogerbobbin actually was. Needless to say I was baffled at the entertainment value one could gain from such actions.

I eventually parted ways with her and returned to my native habitat, NY. One night while enjoying a few pints with some friends about the ole campfire (AKA Field Party), much to my great disbelief, I heard the term used once again as a bunch of knuckleheads proceeded to tie a tractor innertube to the back of a pickup truck with some chains and tear off into the night, hooting and hollering. I chose not to partake in such activities, because I placed GREAT value on the condition of me bum.

Since then I have heard the term used 2 or 3 times, usually at a rural gathering of some type and usually after the consumption of several cold alcoholic beverages.

I have heard it called other things as well, just not nearly as colorful.

Disdiadokokenesis (which means the inability to make rapid alternating movements due to cerebellar lesions)
Cachexia (extreme tissue wasting of chronic disease)
Shindig
Bellatrix (a female warrior)
Coconut
Inshallah (God willing in Arabic and the answer to every deadline request in the Gulf region....)
Rhonci (a wheeze)
Homonymous (the same on both sides)
Bumble
Wierd-ass
Silly
Declofenac, Ramoxifen, Sulfasalzine and many other drug names which bear no resemblence to what the damn things do and just sound really cool.

The list could go on..

Banter is rapidly escalating up my list. People around me say they are going somewhere "just for the banter" or "just for the crack" which is an Irish word I believe meaning fun. Banter is also used in replacement for "chat".
Using "twigged" to mean that you totally just understood something "then I twigged that was what he meant" which is a great word and from the Gaelic!

New balls please....

I'm not reading through the entire thread, so if I'm repeating, I apoligize.

Swirligigs! is my all-time fav, but others I like are
Abydos
Falcon
Gryphon
Fire

they just have a certain poetry feeling. I'm not really one for single words- I like taking in a bunch of words as a whole, like a in a sentence or a paragraph.

That's not what's important. It's only important that the word is important to you.

Repetition is one of my favorite words!

There's not many words I find standing out in a positive way, but a lot I dislike. I'll save those for another thread. :)
