Whoop, There It Is!! Joss Whedon Officially Writing And Directing WONDER WOMAN!!

The Hollywood trade papers report Thursday morning that it’s a done deal, though no start date has yet been set, and no one has been cast. AICN sources have long maintained that Warner Bros. hopes to have its big-screen "Wonder Woman" in the cinemas by summer 2006.
"Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet," Whedon said in a statement. "What I love most about icons is finding out what's behind them, exploring the price of their power. When ["Wonder Woman" producer Joel Silver] and I began discussing the character, I realized there is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising and in her own way almost vulnerable. She's someone who doesn't belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me."
For those new to the site, Whedon masterminded "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Firefly," three of the finest entertainments ever televised. He made his feature directorial debut last summer with "Serenity," the big-screen sequel to "Firefly," which hits movie screens in September. He also co-wrote "Toy Story" and created a really great script called "Alien: Resurrection," which was directed by a guy who didn't speak much English and the movie itself didn't turn out so good.

I was wondering why no one was discussing this over here...
I think it is pretty exciting news!

After Joss has done such a brilliant job with the 'Astonishing X-men' comics,
I figure he'll do an equally brilliant job of being true to the original icon comic character,
while bringing in a fresh and funny view that is sure to be thrilling.

Now if we could just get Gina Torres in the role,
because she was born to play a Super Hero!

Joss said last Summer (when someone asked him about directing the 3rd X-men) that he wouldn't direct something he hadn't written...
and I think now days he won't write something he can't direct.
He had bad experiences with all of his scripts that became movies.

I think he has the right to have artistic control,
and it looks like he is going to get it on 'Wonder Woman'

where they quote Joss:

Shiny! But if Joss is doing Wonder Woman, what about other Serenitys and his run on Astonishing X-Men? I guess the man likes to be busy.

But there's one I have to know: is there going to be an invisible jet? I'm assuming it's part of the Wonder Woman lore from the limited comics I've read, but you have to admit it's got a bad rep because of the Lynda Carter T.V. version and Superfriends. Of course, this is Joss, so I trust him, whatever he decides.

Now it's just a matter of who's going to play Diana...

The story has just been slashdotted - complete with Firefly mention:

Joss seems to like stories with strong leading Women: Buffy, Alien: Resurrection and now Wonder Woman.

well Joss hasn't been given the green light for 'Serenity 2' yet,
he probably won't be until after 'Serenity' is released in theaters...next Fall.
In the mean time writing 'Astonishing X-men' is hardly a full time job.
It is only March
and I'll bet he has a script already written for 'Wonder Woman'...
so
a few months of pre-production, hiring actors, etc
the Summer filming.
by the time 'Serenity' is released Joss will be done with the filming of 'Wonder Woman', and it'll be in post production through the Winter.
Summer of 2006 Joss will have a major blockbuster hit
(good for the whole family, swarms of small children as well as adults)
and he'll get started filming 'Serenity II'

Shiny indeed!

This is very happy news -- considering all the rumours that have been running around for years about where they were thinking of taking this movie. Finally something good!

And, if I can put in my 2cents, the Wonder Woman comics were at their best when George Perez was writing them (87-91?) -- no invisible jet, steeped in greek mythology, great characters... all good.

Should provide great fodder for Joss' fertile mind!

Wonder Woman can fly, so they might choose to omit the jet.

If they do include it (if she has any JLA business, or a need to carry passengers/equipment), they'll hopefully borrow a page from Justice League Unlimited, where the jet is a "normal" Javelin-class spaceship, but with an active cloaking device. I.e., from inside it looks normal, and from outside there's just a mild distortion in the air --nothing inside is visible.

Right. Wonder Woman can fly, therefore she doesn't need a jet.

My personal theory is that she *never had a jet*. She just flew around in a sitting position to mess with people's heads.

Makes for a much more interesting image.

Ok.

Whoa. Wonder Woman can FLY?? Yeah.. that's kinda NEW. She could never fly in the old stories. I'm still a little irked she's flying in the cartoon, the JLA one. I don't know if she's doing it in the comics, NOW, but in the OLD comics, she NEVER flew. Not without the invisible jet. the new justice league cartoon is very cool, but it's just NOT the "REAL" Wonder Woman.

OK, just had to get that off my chest, cuz, really.

As far as Morena as Wonder Woman, I listened to that interview, and he never said she was going to BE Wonder WOman - ther was just an implication he'd like to, maybe.

While I think it would be cool, I'm not sure she's really the right choice. And THAT from someone who adores her. Hubby and I think maybe she'd have to bulk up muscle-wise, to be able to pull it off.

Anyhow, just seeing SO many people saying she could fly was making me nuts. Joss seemed to know better, in the interview. He said the invisible Jet was doable. Joss knows the "real" Wonder Woman does NOT fly.

If she does in the movie, while I think it's a cool idea, I WILL be disappointed, cuz, well, Wonder Woman was NEVER a "Super" she was something else entirely. Flight is just... weird.

Just my opinion, feel free to yell and holler, cuz I ain't likely to change my mind - like I say, I think it's a cool idea, but it's still wrong.

Be prepared for Joss to completely stand any and all Wonder Woman canon on its head.

I so sincerely hope he completely rewrites the sexist patriotic crap and does something decent with it!

Talk about a character that is long overdue for a complete upheaval.

Kellaina, thank you for the link, that was interesting.
I don't think we need to worry about Joss letting WW look weak,
considering tha that is a complaint he had about the TV show WW (w/Lynda Carter).
And I don't think we have to worry about the 'patriotic cr@p' considering his politics.
And I REALLY don't think we have to worry about his being sexist considering BtVS.

Personally I hope that Joss gets to cast his first choice,
because I think he knows what he is doing.

And Joss never said Wonder Woman could fly,
in fact in his interview he indicated that he was going to use the invisible jet (I can't wait to see how that is handled!).

Ok, sort of true if you count the last 18 years as NEW. In 1941 she did not have the plane; she picked it up during the late 40's or 50's. She could not fly without the invisible prop-plane that eventually morphed into a jet. Like most of the DC Universe she got a big reboot after Crisis.

In 1987 she got re-written as a living statue crafted by Hippolyta, and has had the power to fly since then. I've never been comfortable with the living statue thing. Still, it's better than when she lost her powers in the 60's and trained as a martial artist under the master named "I Ching". But I did always think the invisible plane was twee. Come on, an actual god takes the time to craft her lasso, but the best transport anyone can come up with is a plane?

Rumor has it that Natasha Gray from houston, tx will be the next wonder woman. She played in Friday Night Lights which she sat next to Tim Mcgraw. She was at the Friday Night Light's movie premiere in Hollywood at the Mann's Chinese theatre where she walked the red carpet. She could be Lynda Carter's daughter! Someone told me they heard that Lucy Lawless is being considered for the Wonder Woman role.

If you ask me, she would be the PERFECT one to be Wonder Woman!! She is a classic beauty and has a strong personality. As Xena, she was the Wonder Woman of that storyline. After thinking of her in the role of Wonder Woman, I can't really think of anyone else who would fit the part.

Lucy is too old as are about 90% of the actresses that have been mentioned on this and other boards. And every woman with a vague connection to Hollywood will eventually be mentioned in connection to this movie. If they aren't then their publicists should be fired.

And Morena, isn't little. She is 5'9". That isn't little in my book. Put some four inch heels on her and she will be 6'1" (look I can do math).

I don't know who's going to be WW or who I'd like to see as WW (but Morgan Freeman would be cool), but I feel that Morena just doesn't seem right. Granted her character was essentially a courtesan, but she seems to be more seductive and some other such type adjectives. She's just not what comes to mind when I think of a warrior woman. Gina Torres could definitely pull it off, though.

Now we have to be married. I'm in the family way.

I remember that before Superman(1978), I thought it wouldn't be done right, what with the " Truth, justice, and the American Way" buisness associated with the character, but, Donner was a genius. He gave us a man, not a cartoon.
Likewise, Whedon, being also a genius, will be incapable of giving us less.
Wonder Woman?

We all admire Joss, so even if he casts someone that doesn't fit mine or any one person's individual concept of WW it won't be much of a leap of faith for us to believe he has a reason for casting the actress he chooses. And once we see the movie, we'll probably understand why he chose that actress (whoever she may be).

As long as we're looking for actors who have worked on Joss' shows, I'll toss Elisabeth Röhm (officer Kate Lockley from Angel seasons 1 & 2) into the mix. Colour her brunette and I think she'd be striking in the role.

Although Morena or Gina would be terrific also. Gina seems to be the best fit as an all around actress but I doubt she'll be considered.
