The one I've been noticing all over the airwaves, in particular, is the Firefly-ism, "...not so much." ESPN and G4Tech have been on a real kick with that expression for the past couple of months. The past week or three, I've heard it at least twice on NBC's Today (Ann Curry said it once, for certain).

It wouldn't be so bad, except that turn of phrase invariably causes me to quickly jerk my head toward the TV to see if one of the BDH's is on. Then I get the whole self-loathing at being such a Pavlovian dog.

But mostly, it's just the neck strain that's killing me...

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

"Not so much" is not exclusive to Firefly. I've heard it used in another show I recently purchased on dvd. Another series, that while it did get two full seasons, I still consider was canceled way before it's time. I also think that Joss must have been a fan of the show, and while it may be blaspehmous to even hint at the possibility, it may rival Firefly as the best television I've ever seen.

Well when I read that I think that it's more likely it's just a typo. I tend to think they meant to say "shiny new account" as opposed to "shiny account". Doesn't even seem like a good use of the word shiny to me.

I am still violently angry at the bastard programmers at ABC for killing SportsNight. I love that show with a passion. The happiest day of my life was discovering it on DVD, because I had been rationing my tapes because I was afraid they're wear out and then I'd never be able to watch it again.

As far as "not so much" goes, they used to use it on Mad About You a lot.

Althought "not so much" is not a common phrase (at least it used not to be), I must say that I used it well before Firefly came out.

I don't think that if it is a typo, that that would change a thing. It does say:
"
open their own shiny Gmail accounts.
"
So, if it was a typo, the it may read:
"
open their own shiny new Gmail accounts.
"

Either may indicate Firefly fans at Google. Which as another mentioned, wouldn't be all that surprising.

It's just that given the context, it would seem that "shiny" is an unexpected word from someone at least not familiar with Firefly. IMO, at least.

I can confirm this, at least for one employee. Niels Provos is a Software Engineer and IT security expert who works at Google and says Firefly is the best Sci-fi he has seen.

Niels has been involved in a lot of open source development, he is the author of honeyd and has worked on security stuff for OpenBSD, including OpenSSH. I don't know what he does at Google but I bet its interesting.

I met him at a conference where he was presenting and have a lot of respect for him. All the praise for Firefly on Slashdot and elsewhere got me interested but it was when I saw it recommended on his website that I actually decided to buy it. (I had never seen even a snippet of it before that).

SAFFY

I believe Sports Night and Firefly were the two best TV shows ever, and I think it's so cool that so many Firefly fans are also SN fans. It's the dialogue. And the *snap snap snap* timing. And the ensemble cast. And the unabashed, unapologetic moralizing.

at you for about 7 of the 8 our so hours its on, but includes two eps of Sports Night.

Great cast, snappy dialogue - clearly going over the head of the audience. Sorkin's writing needs the extra half hour (well, 22 minutes) that the West Wing provided IMHO, despite the machine gun pace at which the dialogue goes, but that cast is just amazing when you look at where they went to...

I dunno, Joss has nothing on Sorkin when it comes to the moral crusades - takes some damn fine writing to get round some of the sledgehammer/peanut combos that sometimes crop up.

That said, it would have taken divine intervention to save that "Women of Qu'ma" episode of WW. Sheesh.

Yeah, Sorkin is preachier. I'll definitely give you that. His 9/11 episode of WW infuriated a lot of people, including the writers of "Why People Hate America."

I've never liked the WW because Sorkin stopped fighting for Sports Night (which reportedly had received offers from HBO and others) in order to pursue his new project. So I'm bitter. ;)

And I'm the world's biggest Josh Charles fan.

See, I kind of liked that episode - took guts to try it and so soon after the event understandably it would misstep. I suspect a lot of people judge it with hindsight, when it was a very of the moment thing.

Much as I like SN (or what I've seen of it - need to get a copy of the DVD soon I think so I can watch in order), WW is the better series for me.

I loved that show! I'm not surprised so many fffers are fans too. I haven't bought the DVD yet, but it's on my list. So, where did the cast go to? I know the blond woman is on Desperate Housewives, and I think she's an amazing actress. I think I saw the nerdy guy somewhere, but I can't remember where... And the others?
