Hey all - I know KRAD has written the Serenity book. Any idea who is writing the two follow on books due in 2006? Thanks!

Cool - Thanks for the response. Here's to hoping Joss puts some more dough in your pocket! :) I don't usually buy books based on movies, but I will purchase Serenity. Actually, it will be the first "movie or TV" book but I would love to see the movie and how it compares and contrasts to the book. Thanks again!

There will be two original novels in 2006, following my novelization of Serenity in September of this year.

Who the authors will be, when they will take place, and when precisely they will be published, are all still up in the air right present.

Hey Keith - Let's drum up some business for the book. Since the movie was supposed to be out in September, I assume it is already finished. So, some questions for you.

How long did you have to write it?
Was Joss involved in the editing at all?
When the movie was delayed, were you able to go back and rewrite?
How happy with the book are you?
How closely does it follow the movie?
Are there any ways that it is different that you can talk about?
Anything else you want to tell us about the time you spent writing the book?

Thanks!

I really want to see Karen Traviss write one of those two books. Or:

-Allen Steele
- Chris Bunch
- Karin Lowachee

That would be shiny if one of those guys got their hands on one.

Very little time (I'd rather not say precisely), but that was because it was an April book. The date change wasn't announced until the day after I turned in the book. *headdesk*

Yes. He has final approval over it.

The book had already been turned in and sent to Universal for approval when the movie was delayed. When the approval (and the copy-edit) came back, I had time to read it over. I didn't rewrite anything, but I was able to fix some infelicitous language that came about from the rushed nature of the writing process.

Very.

I have no idea. I haven't even seen the rough cut, and the final cut doesn't exist yet. I won't know the answer to that question until September.

See above. (And even if I did know, that's something I couldn't talk about until both movie and book were avaiable. )

During the most intensive phase, my girlfriend was ready to hit me really hard on the head because I was speaking Western, as it were -- the speech patterns of our BDHs was bleeding into my own speech.

So Krad - If you didn't see any of the footage, how did you know what to write? Did you go from the script? What kind of guidelines did you have to go by?

Did you go back and watch the shows before you wrote the book? What kind of prep work did you do? Sorry for the barrage of questions, I'm just fascinated! Thanks!

As with 99% of all novelizations out there, I worked from the shooting script. That's standard -- book publishing is on a much longer production schedule than a movie, even considering that most movie novelizations are rush jobs by publishing standards. The final cut of a movie usually isn't available until long after it's far too late to make any changes to a book.
