i lent my dvds out to a mate a while ago. a big while ago, and i've been missing them, but didn't feel like forking out the £34 it tends to sit at for another copy before i get the chance to pick my old set up. so, imagine my surprise and glee when i found that the mighty play.com are currently offering it up for a mere £14.99. bargain price for all us uk browncoats looking to acquire a second copy or trying to talk friends into buying a set.

i'm just feeling all joyful about my new purchase and wanted to share it with some people who'd understand :)

Welcome to the 2 SET club. One set to loan out to friends/family, and the other one you keep for yourself. I try to watch the loaner and keep the 2nd set on the shelf.

I still prefer my region 1 set but I have the region 2 now - which although are packaged differently, the screen quality is *much* better.

I think all the Fox DVDs are on offer at the moment - I think it is in this month's issue of Total Film that there is a promotion for all their DVDs (inc. the Roswell series, the Millennium series, and, in the bottom left corner (if I remember correctly) is Firefly.

I've seen them at £14.99 on Play.com and in Virgin and HMV. Firefly was also in WHSmiths with a sticker of £34.99. Underneath it was a big red sticker saying, "Half marked price".

It's rather frustrating since I just paid £25 a few days earlier for the boxset.

Similarly, the Babylon 5 boxsets are now £15 each on the internet - a few days before I saw this, I had bought Season 4 for £29.99. Grrrrr.

And to rub salt in the wound, last month I bought a new mobile phone for £49.99 (a Siemens camera phone which I thought was a good price for a camera phone) only to see it advertised on the Freeserve homepage at £29.99

I tell you, it's a conspiracy...

Sorry, I didn`t clarify - the quality of the picture on the region 2 (UK) version appearfs a lot clearer wich means ou pick up on all the fine details like the detailing of the lock on the deserted ship in `Serenity` - If you watch the region 1 DVD, you can only just make out that there`s the word `Press` at the top of the lock - whereas on the region 1 version, it can clearly be seen.

I started a thread short while back about the same, here -

I ordered from play.com yesterday at the price of £15. Today I discover that amazon.co.uk has lowered their price to £13... Last time I checked, yesterday I think, they charged £27...

Not that 2£ matter, esp considering that you need to add shipping to the amazon order... But still.. I usually use amazon (and cdon)...

a major part of that is just the different tv formats between the regions. the r1 set is formatted for ntsc whereas the r2 box is pal. ntsc is around 480 scanlines and 60hz, pal is 520ish scanlines at 50hz. basically, when the standards were being set up, the refresh rate was linked to the powergrid's frequency but with approximately the same amount of bandwidth allocated to each so ntsc less detailed but smoother than pal.

I sympathise entirely, iccledames. Last month I bought Babylon 5 season 5 in MVC for £50. Then I walked into HMV and saw it for £30.

You always notice these things too late don't you. It's very frustrating.

Mind you, £30 for Seaon 5 is tempting - that's quite a low price considering how new it is.

I've heard that one of the episodes on the DVD has been cut short though? Apparently the intro to the episode after the one where it ends with the combined Narn fleet attacks Centauri...is that true?

Kinda puts a downer on the whole thing for me...
Sorry if this is a bit off-topic by the way.

Did I say season 5? Doh! I meant season 4. I hadn't heard about the cut to The Fall of Centauri Prime. Thats really frustrating.

And Firefly is currently ranked there at 27! Pretty impressive for something that's been out for so long. Yet further proof of the idiocy of Fox execs.

How are the region 1 and 2 packaged differently? I'm just curious because i need to buy another set to get autographed at the Serenity con as my original set looks worn. I have the region 1 set but it would be cheaper for me to get the region 2 now that they're at such a low price at the moment.

For my mind, the region1 box set is prettier the 4 DVD`have their own seperate slimline boxes with a different sleeve/artwork - packagd in a bigger cardboard box

the Region2 box set has a fat DVD box which contains a hinged section and contains the 4 disks that way. It does contain a booklet and the `people` art `zoe` `book` etc. appear on the disks (a variation the ones that appeared on the sleeves of the american version).

So, you could buy the region 2 version for the booklet (much the same info as region 1 but in one place) & get the disks signed or buy another region1 and get the individual DVD`s/cases signed - so it`ll be pretty much up to yourself - I don`t think you can go wrong

btw: just picked up a region 1 boxed set with Nathan, Adam & Jewel`s signatures for aprox £40 including shipping from the US! (Now that is a great deal!) It means that I can get the others to sign it too or alternatively bring something else to get signed for my personal item.

This may be considered sacrilidge but I burned two copies of my Region 1 Set that way I'm not dishing out $34 per set (yes, in my local bookstore they are that much) because I just can't afford it. The original box set sits all pretty like on my shelf with it's shrink wrap on (the perks of having friends who work at the movie store). One set to loan out, and one to watch and get as scratched and messy as possible. I may consider retiring the third set to loaners as the BDM gets closer and purchasing a Region 2 (DVD player plays both 1 and two) since the video quality is better.

That's what the manufacturers should've done. Build the DVD players Region 2 and slowly convert us to high quality viewing.

I assume that "£" means GBP, I don't even know what the other pounds are, what is the current conversion rate to US dollars?

Used to be different, didn't it? How much has the US dollar dropped in the last 4 years?

Doesn't matter if you don't know, just a curiosity.

Hi All,

Yes, got a great bargain, the cost of the DVD set would have set me back the same amount (even last year) - the $USD to £GBP has fluctuated a bit in the past couple of years but has been steadiy increasing from about 1.65 at the end of 2003 to about 1.9 which means it`s great buying stuff from the US (providing the VAT people don`t reckon you owe Tax).

The set I have was signed at DragonCon 2004 by a Dealer, it`s worth checking eBay from time to time - although I really won`t one of those `crates` that fox issued promo stuff in when the TV series was released but they are rare (and expensive!)

it used to be closer to $1.50 for one pound...
now it has been worse (for the US) with it being close to $2 for one pound.

also the US dollar used to get 1.50 Canadian...
but now it is almost equal.

So pretty much the US dollar has gotten weaker all over the world
