... it was brilliant?

I just checked out the first couple episodes on DVD. Why is this not still on the air? Makes no sense whatsoever.

Oh well, onto the rest of the episodes,

Close: because it was anti-anti-brilliant. There's a subtle but crucial distinction there. That is, not only is it terrific TV, as you rightly point out, but there's the corollary: Good TV, with strong fan support puts the lie to the idea that people only want Bad TV, and Fox was/is totally committed to that idea.

Welcome!

Sigh. I wish people would stop confirming that Fox was stupid for cancelling Firefly. It's easier to think that I'm just crazy...

And welcome!

Heh... I suppose. I just don't watch much TV or catch many movies. A friend of mine loaned me the DVDs and told me I would really like them. So logically, they sat on a shelf for a year or so :)

Firefly didn't fit into F*X's long term plans, which included wall to wall 'Reality' shows, where viewers would be asked to check their brains at the door. So, because Firefly was brilliant, it clashed w/ the rest of their line up. (Same goes for John Doe, but that's for another thread )

I think basically that the suits at F*X wanted more of a campy, not too complicated type of script that was easy for the veiwers to follow along and not feel completely lost even if they missed an episode or 2. It appears that F*X wanted The Dukes of Hazzard , but in outter space. You know, for the 21st century, and all that.

So they cancelled this show because

Low ratings, its really not that hard to understand.

and before you start with the fox didn't give it a chance, friday deathslot, its to good for them.

The very first episode got terrible ratings and as ratings only ever go down as the season goes on, it was no suprise they stopped it mid season.

They are a business not your personel jester.

Tell 'em! Ratings have never improved for any show ever, as Arrested Development, Cheers, Seinfeld, The X-Files, and Star Trek plainly prove. Where would we be if anyone had given those shows a chance? Sheesh. And where on earth did you get the idea that ratings would be better than on a Friday night slot?

One quibble: They're not called personnel jesters any more, they're human resources jesters.

Are you implying that Mynameisjonas is a TROLL? Now that you mention it, I bet you're right! :)

I'm getting tired of the "Fox is a business" rejoinder the trolls haul out here. If Fox is a business, it should act like one. Real businesses, when they have a product to sell, put some effort into advertising it and making sure it's (predictably) accessible to the people they're selling it to. They realize that it will take some time to recover their investment, and they pay attention to customer comments about it.

And in the end, real businesses make progress. Fox has lost 600,000 primetime viewers through their programming decisions.

So I think they're acting more like a jester than a business. QED.

Oh, but they ARE my personal jester. As a customer ( viewer) I decide on whether to buy ( watch )FOX TV or not. I choose not to. Just because McDonalds serves more people than a finer restaurant, doesn't make it 'better'.

Wow, thanks for clarifying that for me! I appreciate the dose of fair and balanced business logic.

To clarify my question: The product was obviously one of quality. Why couldn't these business-saavy TV executives figure out a way to market and develop it into a money-making series? Why not run the shows in order, for instance?

Regardless MynameisJonas, that was way too much vitriol for a post that was essentially a "hello" to the board.

Whatever,

If only it were true. He could be "whatching" something on Fox right now instead of baiting us to get that sweet, sweet attention.
