When Mal was at the used Spaceship lot in OoG, was he drawn to that one particluar Firelfly class ship, sitting off by its lonesome, or is there a story in his past that involves a similar ship. I always just assumed that he fell in love w/ 'Serenity' right there on the spot, and that's where the story started/ended. But then a idea came to me.... what if there's more to it than just that?

Apologies if this has been brought up before.

I'd have to say that alot of it had to do with the fact that ol' Slim wasn't trying so hard to push that ship off on Mal. Plus it was just sitting there, on it's own. Sort of majestic-like. Proud.

Oh, so now you're gonna try to tell us that you're NOT obsessed w/ Firefly? Good one.

Frankly, I am NOT obsessed. I'm as far away from obsessed as you can get without, of course, coming back around to obsessed from behind. I am "anti-obsessed." Quite often, I say things like, "Fire-wha?" And "SimonWho?" And, "NO, I DON'T want to meet the real you now! You're all bloody and look like you've just been tortured for Pete's sake! Go get cleaned up."

See? I hardly even think about Firefl--whatever the name of that show was.

PS: I think Mal's dad must have had an old Firefly model up on blocks in the barn and wouldn't let Mal have it when he turned 16, thus causing Mal to harbor some resentment and feelings of "I'll show him that I can handle that kind of horsepower." But that's just my psych degree showing.

You rang?

I think that Mal knows what we're told about the Firefly class of ships; they're efficient, they'll run forever and there are tens of thousands of them about so it won't be overly memorable. Perfect for what he has in mind.

Pity about the lack of guns on board though.

Good question. I have a Real Life analogy that I've always associated it with. My Serenity is a 1971 Corvette Convertible. I had always made fun of, disliked, despised and or Ignored them until I saw mine. I had that same look on my face. I've owned that car for 22 years now.

NEEDLESEYE

It could always be fond or thrilling memory that made Mal chose a Firefly. My husband has a story about when he was little, maybe 4yrs and he and his parents were riding in his uncle's Jeep, they 360'd on some ice or something, and while the grown-ups were OMGing and sighing in relief that they hadn't died, my husband was smiling sayin', "lets do it again!"
So, now he's grown up and has a Jeep.

Yeah, you and NEEDLESEYE prolly hit the mark right on. I recall the scene when Mal and Zoe were walking through the cargo bay, and Zoe asks " What's that " . Hee hee. Mal gave a nice little sales pitch, even if Zoe was looking at what was on the floor.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Maybe it is just me, but the look on Mal's face when he was staring at Serenity just screamed love at first sight.

I agree w/browncoat1...and the 1971 Corvette Convertible is a sweet ride (and is your love at first sight)but Im thinkin a 1995 astro-van is more like the real-life Serenity...with nice rims or something.

Me too. When my mom watched Out of Gas last month she said I had the same look on my face as Mal did when he saw Serenity in that Used Ship Lot. Except I was looking a 1985 Buick Riviera sitting out in the middle of a field.

You don't argue with a Reaver.
