I am so sure this is going to happen I am putting a spoiler warning on. The only evidence I actually have are from interviews saying River demonstrates martial arts and that a quick summary says that "the greatest danger may be on Serenity herself".

Oh and apologies if someone else has already made this point but I haven't read a lot of other threads in a while.

Ok so River: I think its safe to say that she is a psychic assassin created by Blue Sun (or just the alliance - same thing I suppose) for black ops and other nasty stuff. Thing is, is her mental state part of the process? It strikes me that not only were they amping up her psychic ability (simon has said that she has always been very intuitive) but they also would have been very careful to program her to act in the way they want. Its no good creating an assassin who can read minds and outwit any enemy (not to mention can shoot with lethal accuracy from memory with her eyes closed and has demonstrated athletic ability) if you can't control her, and stop her from killing you.

So the alliance are mentally programming River, and the process would not be pleasant. This combined with the frequent trips to surgery would very likely have turned her into the gibbering wreck we see at the start of the pilot. But, the next stage in the brainwashing would be to turn her back into a (outwardly) normal person able to to carry on a coherent conversation and with all scars well hidden - but not (and this is important) before planting suggestions for later behaviour. What this creates is a classic sleeper agent, a perfectly normal person until the trigger is received (usually a code phrase - or in the case of Spike in Buffy s7 a song) whereupon they turn into a killer. In River's case the most important question is "how far through the process was she?" and is she strong enough to resist or recover from the trigger?

So this is what I reckon is going to happen, at some point, River is going to receive the trigger and the nice sweet insane girl we all know and love will at least temporarily disappear and be an awesomely formidable foe - against the rest of the crew.

In future stories, (hopefully there will be some) River can harness her dark side in the way that Angel famously did in B and A. Also a quick thought for future stories:

Presumably River wasn't the only "student" at the Academy? It strikes me that the alliance wouldn't put all their eggs in one basket, and its a big verse. I think River may one day meet another girl who did complete the course and is a full fledged bad guy, with the same skills etc. Chickfight!

"No power in the Verse can stop me"
