So. . .

I post a thread and a blog about how Firefly got a really great review from a noteworthy sci-fi author. . .

And some of you manage to turn it into a 'gay-bashing vs. Christian bashing' argument complete with name-calling and crap!!!!!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE????

Are you SO HELL BENT on crowing about your personal politics and crowing AGAINST other people's personal politics that you feel the need to hijack a perfectly good thread praising a good review of our favorite TV show?

GEEZ!!!!

I hear ya. I haven't read any Orson Scott Card, but I do know the name and I thought that it was great that someone with that kind of name recognition in the scifi/fantasy world would single out Firefly. And then. . . Funny how quickly a thread can devolve, isn't it?

You know, ReeQueen started a whole new Faster Loading Politics thread in Real World that is perfect for the "discussion" that is going on on your other thread now.

I thought the review was very cool. I read the Ender series and enjoyed it. I don't know about Card's personal beliefs or politics, but hey, I don't agree with Adam Baldwin's politics either. That doesn't mean I don't respect the man, and enjoy his work. What happened in that thread is uncalled for.

Static,
Some people never went to kindergarten. You remember that we learn all the biggest lessons in kindergarten.
We learn to share.
We learn to 'do unto others'.
We learn to tie our shoes.
We learn lots of things. Most of all, we learn not to be mean. If you're mean in kindergarten, no one will play fingerpaints with you.
Remember to keep the fingerpaints (and enter key) out of the hands of mean non-kindergarten vets.

Good point. Were here because of our love of a TV show. Not it's creator's politics, or our own. The assumptions that anyone who is against gay marrage, must be a homophobic Jesus freak, or anyone that is for gay marriage must be a liberal sprout eater, is moronic! People that take either side of any issue, obviously think their position is right, and no amount of bashing, preaching, or insults are going to change that.

Christians believe! Period! Muslims believe! Period! Athiests believe! Period! Republicans and Democrats believe, etc., etc., etc.!

I wonder how many of the more liberal or conservative members here, have run off others because they couldn't refrain from bashing everyone that doesn't agree with their own narrow view, and trust me, anytime you take that strong of a position that you stoop to bashing, you are taking a narrow view! This is just my opinion, but I think this is what is wrong with this place. It used to be a fun place, where deversity was respected. Now, not so much, and that's sad.

Like I said before, this is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Yup, I'm also sorry for my responsibility for the hijacking. I forgot rule number 1 of forums: never post when you're angry. I should have just pointed out my feelings about Orson Scott Card and left it at that.

But I agree, I thought for the most part the thread was fierce about the issues, not the people and the attacks were on viewpoints, not on other members.

Mind you, I'd love to see the debate if President Bush endorsed the movie...

TAUSETIPRIME

Ive read much of Orson Scott Card's work (many of the titles, i've read more than once).

I have no clue what the man's politics are, but the man knows all things sci-fi. He knows how to craft a character driven story-line. He can write, and he can recognize the merit of someone else's work.

So, in this arena, I say that O.S.Card's word is down-right noteworthy. Static posted a damn fine article. I see it as a good sign for things to come in all that is Firefly/Serenity.

If, while writing the article, Mr. card was clubbing baby seals, poisoning the environment, and beating up old women with their own walkers......it doesnt diminish his word in the one area the article discussed.

If we cant keep our own heads on the subject before us, then we might as well all become nay-sayers. No one stands up to the microscope for long.

A final point for those who started their posts with "i've never read any of his stuff, but he's (insert negative comment about a non-related issue)." I find it hard to read comments by people who openly admit no knowledge of the topic at hand. Had the article been written about gay marriage, or someone else's opinion on gay marriage, or even marriage in general......this would have been right up your alley.

Thank you Static, its an article I may have never come across, and that is why I come to this site on an (almost) daily basis.

Well said, Static, and thanks very much for posting the review. Nice to see a prominent voice speak up for Firefly.

I've read several of OSC's books (Alvin Maker) and adored them. As someone else pointed out earlier up this thread, he's a master storyteller and thus knows what he's talking about when he praises Firefly. I also *really* don't care about his politics (and I'm a girl who likes girls) - how are his politics even remotely relevant in the context of a rave review for our BDH?

Static, I'm very glad you brought up the review - my wife will enjoy reading it - she's a big Card fan.

Despite the fact that we both have serious concerns about Card's personal beliefs - and they do spill over into his writings at times - he IS a skilled writer (was once my wife's favorite), and I'm sure his review will help out the movie.

I'd agree - keep it civil, Simonwho (you've already apologized, and that's really, really shiny of you!), and I think we can all respectfully disagree on Card's personal beliefs.

Now, I've got to get my wife to the 'pute to see Static's nicely posted OSC review...

Totally agree with you. I personally have never read any of his books, nor do I know anything about his political leanings. But I know that he is a big sci-fi figure and that if the words from his lips about FIREFLY are ecstatic, then that'll help us. I'm just waiting for Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen King, Majel Barret Roddenberry and other sci-fi notables to give the BDM a leg up as well.

I think that because people are so into politics nowadays that this hijacking of threads happen. It's Bill O'Reily vs. Michael Moore. I'm sure if Mike endorsed a sci-fi series or something else that it would evolve into a political firestorm.

BTW, I know Adam Baldwin's political, but I've never read any of his political posts. Could someone point me in that direction? Is he left or right?

I was very excited to read OSC's review, and dissapointed at the direction the thread was taking. I don't know anything about the man's politics. It sounds like I would disagree with them. But heck, I disagree strongly with Joss's support of Kerry, but I still love Firefly!

I think the review will help build momentum for the fanbase, as does every positive mention.

The other day, Scott McCloud (my favorite comics creator) mentioned on his site that he was going to watch Firefly after he finished Buffy. I can't wait to hear his (undoubtedly) positive review! btw-- I don't agree with his politics either. Hmm, is there anyone who's political view I do agree with? Nope, just my own!

I think it really boils down to Static being an extremely defensive closet homosexual. His hot wife is just a front. That's where all this hostility comes to play. And he fuels his own self-loathing by intentionally stirring up a lot of homophobia just so he can be gratified when the mulitudes of his own people come to their own defense.

So I'm going to have to disagree with Static's anger. ManiacNumberOne is right. It's all your fault. Ya big baby.

From serious to silly...and if Static and Thegreyjedi wanna go do...whatever it is that they do do..none of my business.

OSC's art is separate from his person. Anyone remember reading Death on the Installment Plan in college? Or just for fun? Celine was a complete shit, one of the worst people imaginable (Vichy government loved him, he gave up lotsa Jews) and that diminishes his work not even a little bit. George Bernard Shaw was a vegetarian, lowest form of life on this Earth, and his plays are amazing and wonderful a hundred years later.

Yo, Static, thanks for bringing this up, and never stop being truthful even if it's unpopular. You're my idea of a good guy, even though I don't know you and would probably hate you on sight. :-)

You DREAD becoming an Oscar-winning director whose films have influenced the course of debate in the world's most powerful, if least sensible, nation? That strikes me as odd. The messenger getting in the way of the message is traditional. Marx's haute bourgeois lifestyle got in the way of his message so it's been completely ignored by his many followers over the years.

Well, on so many issues, I agree with Michael Moore (gun control, Iraq, unfair treatment of certain groups, etc, etc) and yet when I see him going on about these issues or when I read his books, I just get annoyed at him. It's odd because I used to love his old stuff, like TV Nation but nowadays... Maybe it was his support for Nader that handed Bush the election.

I guess what I mean is I'd like to be somebody who can calmly and rationally change other people's minds. I don't want to be an extremist that ends up preaching to the choir with his own twisted personal philosophies (I don't want to be that other Oscar winning director either).

Although I'd gladly accept either of their bank accounts.

I have'nt looked at the original thread and if it's as scarily hijacked as it seems I dont think I will. I have said on other threads how much I was disturbed by the way every topic seemed to be turning into an argument and considered deleting this site from my favourites and just walking away. However, the way this thread has turned the problem on it's head by the use of some excellent good humour has given me a new hope (and not in a Starwars way).
The political threads especially have been making me very, very angry but now i think maybe if i throw some humour into thier vitriol it might make some of the people step back and realise just how ridiculous they look to the rest of us.
So if your reading through a particularly nasty thread and suddenly see something that makes you laugh out loud, that will be me.

He sleeps all night and he works all day.

Oh, I know how to do it in the real world. I just haven't figured out how to do it over the internet yet.

If you did want to calmly and rationally change the minds of your friends/neighbours/family and you're in actual physical contact with them, it's very easy. First of all you'll need some chloroform and a trephination kit. Next you'll need a map of the human mind (this one will do: ) and finally a pointed stick. Just remember when you've finished drilling the hole, only poke their brains when you're feeling calm and rational. Don't go charging in there.

I find some of the rude political/religious stuff kind of nasty too. I don't mind intelligent debate as long as that is what the thread is about and people keep their name calling out of it.

I'm with you Static. Enough already! I read your original thread but I haven't read the responses. Obviously, I don't want to.

I thought we were friends on this site..... (sigh...)

SimonWho! Trepanning your loved ones?! I am shocked...yes, shocked...that such goings-on are tolerated in the UK or Canada or Australia or whatever "u"-lovin' place you are. We here in the Great Red State of Texas outlawed that years ago!

It made too many people happy. Cna't have that, y'know.

I am on record, on the other thread, as having said that the review was good because it raised awareness of the delightful Firefly 'verse among the Great Unwashed.

Yeah! Let us perpetuate our unnecessary agreement that politics don't make friends! And that reviews are good! Yeah, Static, I'm with you because no one wants to disagree with you and we must all agree to fit in!
