Bah. This at filmforce.ign.com -- a reasonably respected Web portal:

The opening theme claims "you can't take the sky from me" but it is possible to take your audience. The highly anticipated series from Buffy and Angel creator Joss Whedon has failed to generate much in the way of ratings, sliding from week to week. Despite a public plea by Whedon, the ratings only managed to raise a couple of points, not a good sign. The network's decision to run the episodes out of order has also hurt, giving the series almost no chance at all to survive. FOX has finally scheduled an air date for the two-hour pilot episode – at the end of the series in December. It's generally thought that this will also serve as the series finale. To those who think that Whedon deserves better treatment from the studio he has made so much money for, bear this in mind: if he were anyone else, the series would have been gone by now. Odds for survival: 100 to 1

Think (sadly) you may be right here. The
decision to place this show in the Friday
time slot certainly didn't help matters
either. The World Series also ate the
ratings up a bit as well.

Well I do hope that this show defies the
odds much as Bab 5 did, and that took
awhile to really catch on.

WE can make it survive! WE have to look at things positively. Get as many people as you can into it... don't let them "be afraid." This show deserves our help.. even if it does seem doomed. Just write your letters... and get as many people addicted as posible. I got another person addicted yesterday, and after an hourand a half conversation with my old Art teacher today, he might watch it.

I continue to see hope, because that's what i do..

Don't let the naysayers get you down. There'll always be plenty of those types willing to express their opinions.

Yesterday I bought a roll of one hundred 23 cent stamps and spent the evening printing up postcards to send to Fox and to the sponsors of Firefly. A friend of mine who is also a Firefly fan came over, saw what I was doing and we printed up postcards from him as well.

After a couple hours of work, we each had 31 postcards to send out this morning. Who needs the freakin' Nielsons??!!

DIY, baby! Everything you need to bypass the Nielsons is posted at www.fireflysupport.com

Fox has been patient so far. I think they're waiting to see what the fans do... SO DO IT! Its sweeps month. Now's the time!

Long live Firefly!

How the heck do you do the postcard thing? I tried to print one today and the darn thing wouldn't print. I have also seen different designs. Do we have to design one, print one, or what? The only thing I know for sure is where to send it, but for now I have nothing to send.

Help, anyone?

Don't worry 'bout using someone else's postcard design just as long as you send one in. You could even print one up that just says 'Firefly' in big letters with a similar font. That should be alright.

Cheers!

Even if Fox cancels it, won't Firefly most likely find a home on Sci-Fi or similar? I can't imagine no one would grab it.

That is what I was thinking, it would be such a shame to cancel this show altogether with the kind of utter CRAP they are showing on TV these days. It is just not fair. I don't think they marketed this show very well, had they done more publicity they would have gotten a higher response.

I'm sure there are dozens of way to do this, but here's what I did:

1.) Downloaded the various .jpegs at the www.fireflysupport.com site.

2.) Imported the .jpeg into a page layout program (in my case, Quark XPress though MS Word is enough to do something like this).

3.) Printed up the postards: two .jpegs fit per page (I recommend using card stock 65# paper if you can).

4.) Flipped the pages over and re-fed my printer.

5.) I typed out a brief generic message to the sponsors thanking them for supporting Firefly and printed that out on the opposite side of the page from the .jpeg

6) Voila! Set my printer to KILL and knocked out a dozen postcards at a time. Scribbled the addresses down on the card and stamped that sucker. Cut them out and sent 'em in.

You can, as suggested, skip straight to #5 and just send in your message without the graphic (personally I think symbolism can be very important when doing something like this). You can also make your message a letter instead of a postcard though postage will cost more and you'll need to have envelopes handy.

If you REALLY want to cut to the chase, go to your post office and pick up as many of those blank pre-stamped postcards and fill it in by hand.

Great project for those cold winter days!

I'm trying hard to be positive because I really love this show. But deep down inside (and I can't put my finger on why) I think the decision has already been made to cancel Firefly. Which is very sad because with each episode I watch I become more emotionally involved with these fictional characters - I know, I really should get a life!

It doesn't look like it to me.
