Caught this a few days before Xmas. First, let me say, it's 10 times better than "Hero." I LIKED "Hero." No disrespect there. But the character, action, and romance was all here and much more a) defined, b) sweeping than it was in "Hero," if you saw it.

Whether you've seen it or not, quick side note: About 10 minutes in, Zhang Ziyi's character (in the subtitles) says something like, "I don't trust those filthy dogs." ... while I recognized a word she said, something like "Gosah" or "Goatse." Bottom line, she did NOT say "Dogs."

Anyway, that's just a quick note about an excellent film, and how "Firefly" helped teach me to swear in Mandarin.

XOXO

Some of you may have problems with reading the subtitles for scenes including Ziyi Zhang. Whatever else is said about it, this film is lovely to look at

Fully agreed! I went to see it yesterday and *loved* it. More than 'Hero'? Yes, I think so.

I wanted to applaud after the scene with the beans and the drums in the Peony Pavilion... wow

/ pure intentions, juxtaposed /

I assume you're not in the Toronto area? It's at the Paramount. It's got to be shown near some major city?

Otherwise, the costumes, colours, locations, scenery, sets, casting, acting and narrative surprises were stunning. But I ultimately found HoFD exasperating. Spoiler zone ahead . . .

Select to view spoiler:

The final scene in the field we get to watch each character seemingly rise from the dead after normally fatal wounds. I just wanted it to end. I didn't see anything particular poetic about the grasping for the final breath to say, "I love you," each to the other. To me, less is more. And the snow was so fake that the whole magic evaporated for me. I was half expecting spring songs and sights to erupt in the closing credits.

Film factory I work for did the post post-prod on this one. It's definately out on Canadian release.

Though I understand it'd be difficult to catch it at a local theatre if you live in Eyebrow, Sask....

I'm currently in Cornwall, so it's not playing. Theatre guys here probably don't even know of its existence.

It is playing in Ottawa, but not in either of the two theatres I'm normally able to get to (it's playing in Hull, in Gatineau, in Nepean, but not in Ottawa-proper). Also, I won't be back in Ottawa until after New Years --and being a foreign film, this'll likely be gone within a week.

Ottawa generally sucks for both foreign (non-Hollywood or non-Canadian) and childrens' movies. I'll be catching Lemony Snicket here before I go back ('cause it too will be gone by New Years).

It's particularly wierd/maddening because Hero did play at a nearby theatre.

Sounds like a good excuse to hit Usenet. To be denied Ziyi Zhang is cruel and unusual punishment

Well, I'll chime in and recommend this movie. Finally got a chance to see it today, so I did. I loved it. The Echo Game scene in the beginning is amazing!

And for those who may not be able to see it right now, as I understand it, it's only in limited release right now, and will be expanding to more theaters in late January. So, per-maybe-haps it will be at a theater near you in a month.
