I recently sold some dvd's, because I needed a little extra cash, and I realized I could eliminate most of my dvd collection and still be happy. But there are some that I have to keep. Here is a list of dvd's that I could never sell.

* STAR WARS TRILOGY. I was pretty young when I watched the Empire Strike Back. but I still remember it well, and that was almost 25 years ago. Vader, Lightsabers, Bespin, Carbonite. No wonder I remember it so well. Star Wars rocks. Here is a sad thought: Will kids who have seen episode 1 or 2 in the theater remember it fondly as adults? I don't think so.

* AFTER LIFE, and MABOROSI. Had to throw a couple of my favorite foreign films in here. Both of these Japanese dramas done by Kore-eda Hirokazu are amazing. Visually stunning, and stories so deep, it makes a great american drama like House of Sand and Fog almost pale in comparison. Brilliant.

* BUFFY, ANGEL, FIREFLY. I'm just going to group all of these together. These shows are the best television ever created. Complete escapist goodness. If ever a reason for the creation of tv, these shows would be at the top of the list.

* THE ALIEN QUADRILOGY. Even though the third and fourth Alien movies were a bit lesser than the first two, the extras make up for it. Everyone who likes the Alien movies should own this set.

* MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 COLLECTION. I own volumes 1-5, and I will continue to buy them until they have completed the series. The best comedy show ever. I got into it on the Sci-Fi channel, late Saturday nights. My friends and I used to get together, order a couple pizzas, and laugh our heads off for two hours. I love this show.

* EVERY MOVIE MADE BY JOHN HUGHES. John Hughes didn't just make films in the 80's, he is the 80's. Try to think what the 80's would have been like without The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Oh man, your right that is a depressing thought Also Some kind of Wonderful, Pretty in Pink, and Planes Trains, and Automobiles. I don't have Curley Sue, Dutch, or Home Alone, But I will get them sooner or later. Must have every John Hughes movie, they are all good. John Hughes, what happened to you? are you in hiding somewhere? Please make more movies.

There is my list. It might change someday, but that is how it stands for now. So what are the staple dvd's in your collection?

Firefly. No point in expanding on that.

Star Wars Original Trilogy. Again, no point in talking about that.

Minority Report- Excellent SciFi movie there.

Taken- Excellent series.

Kill Bill, Vol 1 & 2. Those movies are fun.

Indiana Jones Trilogy- No point in explaining

Solaris- Very good scifi movie.

Alien

The Matrix

Pitch Black

Stargate

Maybe a couple more...

*LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy

*STARGATE seasons 1-5
and

America loves a winner!

Besides the obvious....

Lord of the Rings Box sets : FOTR and TTT. Soon to add ROTK.

MST3K - If I had my druthers, I'd just keep the early ones, with Joel. After Joel left, it just wasn't the same. T.V.'s Frank, where are you ?

Lake Placid - Love that big croc. And Betty White is hilarious!

XMen 1.5

There are others in the 'library' (laughs), but they'd prob not make the list of 'can't live with out', even though I'd not toss 'em.

Buffy, Angel and Firefly of course.
The Song Remains The Same (1973 Led Zep concert)
Passion of the Christ
Smallville S 1-2
American Beauty
(I only have a few dvd's)

I also got the Star Wars Trilogy on VHS just before they released the 'new, updated' versions. So I'm glad I can watch them the way I remember them as a kid.

CYBERSNARK

My DVD collection is embarassingly tiny ('cause I'm poor, and single DVDs usually go for over $30 up here, box sets can reach the triple digits).

The only "never part" disks I have are:

Read or Die OVA (because it has Yomiko-chan)
InuYasha: Affections Touching Across Time (hate the title, love the movie)
Stargate SG-1: Season 6 (wasn't expecting Jonas to be my favourite character, and I still haven't gotten around to watching the commentaries).
Star Trek Nemesis (the best TNG movie, IMHO)

After Christmas, I plan to be able to add to it (I'll buy them myself, 'cause there are no DVD stores in Cornwall, and nobody in my family knows what "animé" means). Most significantly with InuYasha: The Castle Beyond the Looking-Glass.

Buffy, Angel, & Firefly -- NEVER getting rid of these. Even when DVD players become obsolete I will still have them just for the cover art.

Star Wars Trilogy- of course

Drop Dead Gorgeous -- My number one comedy of all time.

Heathers -- my second number one comedy of all time.

Terms of Endearment -- Because I can always use a good cry.

American Beauty -- Just plain and simply in love with this movie.

and I know this is crazy but I could never get rid of my Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Bed Knobs and Broomsticks movies. I really like Julie Andrews and Angela Lansbury.

Oh yeah and I could never get rid of the Manchurian Candidate (the original) or Dr. Strangelove.

I guess that is kind of a lot.

Hee Hee "Support Your Local Sheriff" is GREAT! I especially love the red paint on the jail floor, and the son trying to explain that the father's never going to bust the jail bars because he helped put them in, and the cannon at the end, and the...

Besides the obvious, I MUST have--

-Star Wars Trilogy
-Alien Quadrilogy (actually, more like the first two, I guess I could live without 3 and Res.)
-John Carpenter's The Thing
-The Fifth Element
-Indiana Jones Trilogy
-Harry Potter flix (this counts in Books I Must Have To Survive, also)

I could add more, but these would be the mainstays...

Should we start a "Books I Can't Live Without" thread? Yes, and I'll start it now.

Moose,

Raiders of the Lost Ark (I can live without the other 2) ...I feel the same way. The 1st could be the best movie ever. The 2nd, didnt even enjoy it. 3rd was good entertainment but was only OK.

also Band of Brothers. I borrowed this from a friend. Boy was it good. My neighbor called while I was watching 'Bastogne' and said "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON OVER THERE!" ..guess I had the stereo a tad loud.

KELLAINA

In no particular order...

Firefly

Buffy - Seasons 1-4, 6 (in particular season 3, I'm acually watching 'The Wish' as I write this, to be followed by 'Amends', since it's X-mas and all.) Hopefully seasons 5 and 7 will appear under the tree.

Angel - Seasons 1 and 2 for now.

Love Actually

The Princess Bride

Gilmore Girls - Season 1

Star Wars Original Trilogy - although technically it's VHS

Stargate SG-1 - particularly season 4

Alias - Season 1

There's more movies I could list but they're all on VHS and my mind is drawing a blank at the moment anyway.

The obvious Firefly

. . . . . hmmm

After Firefly the list is less dire, but I'd have to list:

Holes
X-Men 1 & 2
Notting Hill (even if it is a re-hashed 4 Weddings)

I'm sure there must be more but the above are the one's I'll throw in the DVD player just for the heck of it.
I would list the Star Wars trilogy... really wanted to want to list it, but I would rather have the original theater version rather than the spiced and Jar-Jar'd up DVD version. When I saw the end of the Jedi and there was Haden Christenson at the end I just about puked...

...and the scene in the bar, and stopping the big gunfight to walk across the street, and "They didn't use words like that in the 3rd grade." You'd be surprised how often the line, "Well this is just plain dumb and stupid" comes in handy. I've never been able to take Bruce Dern seriously as a villain in any other movie because I always see him as Joe.
