just read this on whedonesque-yeehaw!some GOOD news today!

Novel adventures for Joss Whedon's space western.

Three new books based upon the adventures of Mal Reynolds and his motley crew have been announced by publishers Simon and Schuster.

The range will launch next autumn with an adaptation of Joss Whedon's screenplay for big screen adventure Serenity.

Although the publishers considered asking Joss to write the novel himself, the job eventually fell to Keith R.A. DeCandido, who has previously written several Buffy and Angel tie-ins.

The Serenity adaptation will be followed by two original Firefly novels in 2006.

But... Who's writing them? What are they going to be about?

KRAD, do you have any info on these?

I hope that they go into some of what happened between the end of the series and the start of the movie. That would be really cool!

Dear Diary,

Today we found out our BDM was postponed for 5 months. It was terrible, but we will keep flyin'.

Dear Diary,

Today we found out that Keith will be writing two new novels of our beloved BDHs to be released sometime after the BDM.

It was the best day ever!

Right now, the only thing known for sure is that there will be two original novels following my novelization. Nothing else is set yet -- who'll be writing them, what they'll be about, when they'll take place, all that still is to be determined.

I would love to write them, but I also know there are plenty of other really good writers out there who'd like a shot (and who have burned me in effigy for getting the novelization gig ).

So right now, what's in that press release is pretty much it. (Though I've never actually written any Angel tie-ins.........)

Finally some good news Id really like to see one of the books be a prequels of sorts and released a little earlier than the film but I guess thats wishful thinking.

At the end of the day this time next year we will all have seen serenity and have four books to read which is great news and the 'verse will be very much alive.

Great news!

I've been scouring the world looking for a good new book to read, so I will add these to my list of upcoming prospects.

I sure would like to know who is going to write these things.

They didnt call it the dark ages because it was dark.

I'm generally not into reading books based off TV shows, but I can't get enough of anything Firefly-related, so I'll definitely be reading these.
Just a question on the content of these books though, would Joss or anyone from the Firefly writing team be involved in the process of writing these books to ensure that they're up to the quality and standards set by the show?

Shiny indeed! It'll be at least as good as the 100 pages worth of fanfic I printed in anticipation of going outta town for Thanksgiving!

Sorry, still a cool and exciting thing to have people like you post here, Keith. Congrats and way to go on the novelization. Here's hoping you get a chance to do the other two books as well.

All media tie-in novels go through an approvals process. All of them, without a single exception. Every stage of the process is approved by a representative from the rights-holder from whom the publisher bought the rights to do the novels.

In the case of Serenity, I don't know who that person will be. It could be Joss. It could be someone Joss assigns. It could be someone at Universal. We just don't know yet, because we're still at the beginning of the process.

I can tell you that the earliest you're likely to see the original books will be 2006 -- either way, it won't be until after the movie is released, because the idea is to take advantage of the full audience from the movie, and capitalize on it.
