The background of the cargo bay looks a little too pretty/fancy/futuristic to my taste. I prefer the old plainer, run-down look.

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

...but, seriously: Notice who's missing from the group photo? Didn't I read where two members of the cast were going to have very limited screen time, prior to the shoot beginning? Something about previous contractual engagements, or something like that. JW swore everyone would be back; but added that two of the characters' stories would be somewhat truncated.

And of course, we all know that Ron Glass was the last of the regular cast to appear on the IMDB listing. I sure hope this doesn't mean we've seen the last of Book and Inara in the storyline, or that their stories get given short shrift in the BDM...

They're two of my favorite characters from Firefly.

Speculatively,

zoid

I agree with you, Shiny, about the old look. I bet I'll grow to love the new look too though. Where did you get this picture? Are there more? Why do you suppose there is no Inara or Book? I thought Inara was going to have a large part in this upcoming movie. Book though, I do agree he's trying to distance himself from the world of television and movies. Unfortunately for us all, Ron Glass has real priorities. He's helping children and such. What a kickass person he is.

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Yow. I've stayed away from stuff on the BDM -- don' wanna spoil it -- but Jewel looks HOT!

I share your sentiments on the cargo bay.

It's from the United Pictures Eurpoean/Netherlands web site:

There are no other new pictures that I can find.

Rest assured that all nine reg'lars are in the BDM, and -- while the screen time isn't evenly divided (that wouldn't be possible in any case) -- all nine have important roles to play in the overall storyline.

Thanks, KRAD... I was on the verge of a fair-to-middlin' depression. I love Book's character. He's so gentle; undoubtedly an extension of the man who portrays him.

I wish I could be more like Mr. Glass. He's my idea of a role model...

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeelll......due to the big payoff from "Ariel", and the possibility that Mal may have successfully pawned off the Lassiter, I personally see no reason why the crew didn't spiff things up a bit.

As far as "real" world goes, it was probably something that was re-done to look bettter on the big screen for all those soon-to-be-browncoats that watch the BDM.

Interesting....older school BC's that watched the first-run shows, the "newer" school dvd guys, and then the newbies that watch the BDm and fall in love......possible intrigue....

Remember, the "Ariel" pay-off all went bye-bye in the following episode (save a dozen apples). Niska got all the extra money they had on them in exchange for Mal's ear and Wash.

But like you said, it could be the doing of the Lassiter pay-off.

Hey, folks:

I DL'd the leeetle, teeny, tiny pic and blew it up as far as I could get it to go and still be any semblance of viewable. I made it lighter, too (and some other stuff).

It's ~100KB, and I posted it in the Blue Sun Room, here:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=2698

If nothing else, you can see some of the details of their wardrobe. Like: Kaylee appears to be wearing a hip-hugging velveteen bellbottom, Zoe's got a holster for her sawed-off carbine, 'Vera' appears to have gotten a facelift and sumpin's up with Jayne's natural...

Hopefully, someone like 'tash will come along and pick up the ball I fumbled in his general direction, and do a proper job of enlarging and enhancing this only promotional photo we've had from the BDM. I just don't think there's enough pixel depth to retain sharpness in an enlargement; but, I'd really like to be wrong...

(Re-) Touchingly,

zoid

P.S.
Would somebody please kick the studio in the shins and get some promos released? Pretty please, with toner slathered all over it? I mean we've still got 5 months to go, with no Firefly. Couldn't somebody toss us poor dogs a bone, fer chrissakes?!

Thanks for that Sir Zoid.

Hey, Wash's got a gun. That's a little unWash-like. Just for promo purposes, I hope. I don't think of Wash generally putting much belief in guns.

Jayne's piece has gone and got slickified and compacted. Hmmmm.

And yeah, Kaylee's lookin' hotter, with the hip-huggin' non-overalls style, everything a cool, hip 26th century mechanic should have.

Enjoyed that.

Well, I certainly know nothing about guns other than the M-16, except to stay as far up-range of 'em as I possibly can, preferably by a couple of zip codes.

But, the grip appears to have finger grooves in it and be made of medium brown wood. The angle of the grip to the body of the gun (almost perpendicular) reminds me of the old German WWII machine pistol you sometimes saw in films.

Of course, it's kind of hard to speculate on the gun when it's in the holster; could be almost anything.

thanks for the great info and for the blow-up of the crew. I was looking close at Wash's gun too and noticed that the holster is rather enormous for the size of the little, wooden, cane-like handle. It might be some gun that has a huge barrel or perhaps even a flare gun. waddaya think?

that would be the Luger, zoid....the pistol grip is at a a steeper angle than that in the pic, as well as a smaller stock. the luger also was gray and black, never brown

(EDIT: Please note that the holster also fits the Mauser 'Broomhandle' better than any other pistol I could readily recall)

I get the feeling the blue is just a really weird lighting thing they've done in post, if you check out the rear door it's still the original colour, as it the floor at their feet.

Though I'm undecided as to the new design, I surely hope Serenity is still the same colour she was when we left her, it kinda looks like a bad star trek set as it is here...

I like to believe they didn't leave Niska's skyplex empty handed. Maybe they grabbed a few things (money if they found it) like that nice Earth-that-was Tiffany Lamp and such. Fetch a nice price from collectors too, I am sure. I mean, hell, they shot everybody they saw, and Niska ran off like a scared bitch, and the fact that Mal/Inara wished he had killed him might indicate Niska got on a ship and left, thus allowing for some looting and pillaging. I know if it had been me, I would have grabbed a few "souveniers" my own self. :)

Yeah, I'm not keen on it being a Mauser, 'cause of the target grips(?): they seem larger than on any example of the Broomhandle I can find . The perpendicular handle and that boxy holster are the keys to the mystery though. I can't imagine a standard pistol that'd stay in that oversized dice cup, without falling to and skittering across the deck everytime you turned around good.

I've got to leave for work in 30 minutes or I'd review the Trash episode myself; but I do believe it might be the dreaded Lassiter.

Wash with an old, non-functioning gun... Does that seem right to you?

I will say that in my opinion the gun that Wash has holstered is a flare gun. If Serenity encounters problems he could summon help with it.

I really like the new bulkhead. It gives a good feeling to where the centerline of the ship is in relation to the cargo hold. My guess is that it was changed for non-fans seeing the film - to clear up Serenity's interior layout.

No way too indicate whether or not they took anything other than the fact that it was never mentioned nor seen, which is why I think that there Ariel profit was a total bust. Besides, if they did get something back for their troubles, it wouldn't seem to coincide with what the show's really about: doing the right thing will often get you screwed anyway.

True, but what is so wrong about stealing the lamp from the desk of the guy who cut your ear off, killed you, and then brought you back for more torture? Not as much as say...kicking his man into an engine for bravado.

Just sayin', could have easily been done, given the situation, and like they said...got a job, don't care much what it is...so hey, doing freelance work for yourself can be the most profitable.

Anywho, you are probably right, I just have a vivid imagination that knows no bounds at times.

Salvaging/Ransacking Niska's orbital station would have been twice as satisfying, and infinitely more justifiable...

Wash's gun is definitely not a revolver. From the arch of the grip it almost looks like a target pistol. The grip extends well up the side of the grip, onto the frame of the pistol. Something like this Smith and Wesson target pistol.

I've got to agree, this sort of holster is not the one a pilot should be wearing. I would think a shoulder rig or a tanker's holster that straps to the front side of the wearer's chest would be more comfortable to be sitting with.

* Metallic look
* Inara and Book missing
* KAylee is not wearing her overals
* Jayne doesnt have the usual emotions on his face as we are used to seeying
* Vera got herself some accesories
* Zoe got a hulster for her sawed off carbine
* Wash is carying a gun though it could be anything from a automatic weapon to a flaregun

Now if I missed something I apologise

* Captain Tightpants is not wearing tight pants.
* Kaylee is wearing a watch,, why would they need a watch in outer space???
* River doesn't have her usual 'wayward' child expression on her face
* Zoe has seperate bullets on her belt
* What is hanging here in the cargo bay?
* What is Simon wearing? A funeral outfit? I know he wears black coats but from this view it looks rather morbid.

Well, it's definitely not The Lassiter. That thing's enormous. But, lest we forget, Christina Hendricks is a total fox! ... er, I mean, Inara threatens YoSaffBridge with The Lassiter; it fizzles, whereupon she produces a futuristic energy weapon. It may be that Wash's new hog's leg is a ray gun, instead of the modified slug throwers we're used to seeing the crew arm themselves with...

It was fun re-watching Trash -- did I mention Christina Hendricks is a fox? Think I'll re-watch OMR next, and leave the lethal weapons to y'all.

Jumping back a bit...historically...

"Archaic weapons for 1000, Alex..."

"The original Mauser had a grip made from the wood of this household item."

"What is a broomstick handle?"

"That is correct!"

Just a bit of firearm trivia...for those with interest, it is why the grip was referred to as a 'broomhandle', it really was, originally.

Re: the circular feature in the cargo bay: Yah! I'd thought of that, too. One could postulate that as the foreward end of a heavily reinforced structural mounting for the engine core (makes me really drool to see the new engine room! Wonder if they'll have the passage to the core include some stairs down to the centerline, like I'd always wished the TV set would have had...).

As far as Burgess' laser: I just don't think Mal was thinking clearly enough at the end to consider filching the thing. Alternately, there was a strong argument for leaving it for the HoG guys and gals, in case any of Burgess' hench-folks should decide to try for a little pay-back.

It is neither a Luger or "Broom handle" Mauser. Far too drastic angles for either. Nor is it an old fashioned signle action design. Too many sharp angles. The photo is proving diffucult to enhance enough to get a better look but I'm workin' on it ;) Right now I can only tell you what it is not. Then again the gun in question could be a prop/modified design like Mal's. I am leaning towards that.

Now, considering how the have shown how firearms "evolved" in the show, whats to say the same thing about holsters? Many holsters IRL (Except for the fitted leather or plastic type) do not accurately signify what kind of firearm it holds/is designed to hold.

I like to think of myself as the chlorine in the gene pool.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Great looking pic!

I must admit the darker, more futuristic looking cargo bay may take a little getting used to for me.

I noticed right off hand that Book & Inara are missing, and it may very well be that they are the two w/ limited screen time.

We know that the movie starts out w/ Inara off the ship as she promised at the end of Heart of Gold. The trailer we saw at Dragon Con showed her in a Companion temple instructing.

Could be the Shephard is off the ship now too. Not sure why. Maybe at one abbey or another.

Great pic all the same!

Thought I'd jump in here and point out that this is a _promotional_ photo, which means is taken by a photographer at a time in the course of the shooting schedule when the actors are in costume and not needed, which may mean that Inara and Book may be shooting scenes at the time of this photo. As to the look of the ship, it seems to me that the cinematographer was _not_ the one taking this photo, so the lighting of the photo may not be what one sees in the film, what with different lighting and color timing in post and such. Suffice to say, Krad's read the script, and he's not too worried about character imbalance. Although I do agree about Jayne's hair. Maybe they'll fix it in post....

FREAKYSINS

I agree with FahQ on the subject of it being most likely a modified version of a current weapon. None of the weapons the regulars carry or are identified with are actual weapons, they're mock-ups... actual weapons retooled to look more futuristic. Mal's and Zoe's sidearms and Jayne's Vera are all like this. Several of the "background guns" (many of those used by Niska's guys, for example) don't appear to be altered, though. I've seen Uzis, AK-47s, Browning BDAs and Beretta Model 92s, various shotguns, and I believe there was a first-generation M-60 LMG mounted on the hovercraft in HoG, and I think Book even used an old British sten submachinegun in the assault on Niska's Skyplex. This subject has actually kind of been a minor nitpick for me about the show... I realize it's the story and the characters that matters, but I wish they'd have gone just a bit farther to make all the slug-throwing type weapons not immeadiately recognizable. But then, that's me...

Peace
