There was a thread a couple days ago about video capturing and converting etc. I'm just wondering now if anyone knows of some exceptional video EDITING software that is free...

I don't know about exceptional, but if you're running Windows XP on a relatively recent machine, you should have Windows Movie Maker. I'm happy with that program...what I'm not happy with is my little 1.1GHz chip that tends to get bogged down when I'm working on big files.

Right now I'm getting the eps in Real Media format and converting them to MPG so I can use them in WMM. Other than this, check download.com. But I doubt you'll find exceptional for free.

What I eventually settled on in OSX was a program called "QuickMix".

The interface isn't as streamlined as it might be, but it's effective, and easy to use.

The one major drawback is that I don't think there are any included video filters----it's all done by copy and paste. Since you can edit the soundtrack seperate from the video, though, this should be sufficient for most tasks.

You can go to www.avid.com and download the freeware version of Avid Non-Linear Editing system. It doesn't allow you to do as much as you are able to do with Avid Express, Avid Express Pro, and Avid Adrendeline but considering you are getting it for free then I don't think you will have much to complain.

I'm not sure if the freeware version of Avid will allow you to capture video from a coprighted DVD but I know that the Avid Express Pro allows you to.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

I should add that if you've done the big Service Pack upgrade for Windows XP, it throws in some neat video effects and transitions for WMM.

You could try looking at sourceforge.net or freshmeat.net. There are other sites like this. Try googling "video editing" or "video editor".

I tried searching for "video editing" at:

freshmeat.net (useful if you're have linux):
http://freshmeat.net/search/?q=video+editing§ion=projects&Go.x=0&G
o.y=0

Sourceforge.net: You're going to have to look through it. A lot of hits, many pages, none on the first page. There *is* windows stuff here if that is all you have.

Well, as if by magic, my RM Converter program doesn't want to work with me and Windows Movie Maker is giving me some trouble. My only source for complete FF episodes is in Real Media, so I'm downloading and will try the Free Version of Real Producer. I'll give a report soon.

Be careful, Outlaw. There's a relatively new virus propagating itself through RealPlayer. FYI.

LOL, they still haven't learned there lesson.

A couple years ago when I was paying close attention to things security I came across an interesting flaw in this "peice of work."

It seems as though there was a buffer overflow that enabled the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the victims machine. And it gets better. This flaw was in *all* versions, *all* platforms. Can we say faces red?

You think something like that would make them tread a little more careful.

Well, I guess it's a relatively old virus, then. CNN was reporting it last week as if it were something new, but this is exactly the same technobabble they quoted in their story. (It's all technobabble to me, btw. No offense intended.)

Well, either way, RealProducer's a bust because it only converts other things to RM. I'm starting to think it's my underpowered processor. Gonna try some conversions over at my friend's today since he's got a newer machine and hopefully I can just bring back the sliced up video back to my computer on CD.

I don't doubt that this virus is "old," but probably old as in weeks or a month or two. I was just saying that this sort of thing has happened to this company before and that they clearly didn't learn there lesson.

And no offense taken. I see peoples eyes glaze over when I talk to them about such things

I doubt it would be your processor. If it is underpowered it'd just take things longer to happen. It's probably something else. None-the-less, it's good to check things out on another machine. Good luck!
